Villages turn into islands, two rain deaths in State

Incessant rain lashes south-interior,
central and Bombay–Karnataka
Heavy rain in various parts of the
State left two persons dead,
damaged houses and flooded
several low-lying regions in the last
24 hours.
One person each was killed in
Chikmagalur and Davangere districts
and several villages in Belgaum
district turned into islands as
incessant rain lashed parts of
south-interior Karnataka, central
Karnataka and Bombay–Karnataka.
Washed away
A plantation worker was washed
away in the overflowing Yettinahole
river, near Kyamanahalli in
Sakleshpur taluk (Hassan district)
late on Friday.
Baby (42), a mother of three, fell into
the stream while crossing it. Parts
of Sringeri and Mudigere taluks in
Chikmagalur district have been
receiving heavy rain, forcing
authorities to close schools on
Saturday.
Forty-six-year-old Kariyamma was
killed when the wall of her house
collapsed at Kanive Bilachi in
Chennagiri taluk of Davangere
district on Thursday night.
In Belgaum, unabated rainfall and
increased inflows into the Krishna
from Maharashtra since Friday left
seven bridges submerged, turning
several low-lying villages in
Chikkodi taluk into islands.
Increased outflow at Rajapur barrage
across the Krishna at the
Karnataka–Maharashtra boundary
and from Koyna dam, near Satara
(Maharashtra), has resulted in the
flood-like situation.
District authorities said that 30
boats had been kept ready in
Chikkodi and Athani taluks to shift
village people in the event of floods.
Kodagu district too continued to
experience heavy rainfall in the last
24 hours with Shantalli hobli in
Somwarpet taluk recording the
highest of 206.2 mm. Cauvery and
Lakshmanatirtha rivers are in spate.
In Shimoga district, all major rivers,
including Tunga, Bhadra, Sharavati,
Malathi, Varada were in spate.
Vehicular traffic between Shimoga
city and Tirthahalli along National
Highway 13 was suspended as the
road near Mandagadde was
submerged. In Sagar taluk,
Beesanagadde village was flooded
by the Varada waters. The district
administration has provided motor
boats for people to reach the village.
Reservoir levels
Copious rain has pushed up water-
levels in several reservoirs. The
water-level in the Hemavati
reservoir in Hassan stood at 2,910 ft
against the full reservoir level (FRL)
of 2,922 ft. On Saturday, the gross
storage was 26.674 tmcft. Last year
on this day it was 11.42 tmcft.
The water-level in the Harangi
reservoir in Kodagu district on
Saturday morning stood at 2,856.38
ft against the maximum of 2,859 ft.
Inflow has increased at the rate of
18,606 cusecs. Outflow was at the
rate of 21,975 cusecs and at the rate
of 650 cusecs into the canals.
Water-level in the Linganamakki
reservoir in Shimoga district rose by
3 ft in a span of 24 hours. It reached
1,797 ft on Saturday. Inflow at the
rate of 55,031 cusecs was recorded
here.
The water-level in the Bhadra
reservoir stood at 168 ft with an
inflow at the rate of 30,163 cusecs.
As the Tunga reservoir, near
Gajanur, is full, water at the rate of
66,000 cusecs was discharged into
the river.

Krishna in full flow, Almatti nearing total capacity

As many as 11 gates of the total
26 gates were opened on Saturday
afternoon to let out the copious
inflow into the Lal Bahadur Shastri
reservoir, with the inflow reaching
1.05 lakh cusecs, following the
release of huge amount of water to
the Krishna river from the dams in
Maharashtra due to heavy rains in
the Western Ghats of the
neighbouring state.
A total of 81,515 cusecs of water
was released to the Basavasagar
reservoir in Narayanapura,
including 42,000 cusecs through
the hydel power generating
station.
The water level in the reservoir
stood at 518.35 feet, against the
maximum level of 519.6 feet. The
water storage in the dam was 103
tmc ft against the total capacity of
123 tmc ft.
The hydel station is generating 270
MW of power against the capacity
of 290 MW.
Seven bridges under water
Heavy rains in Maharashtra, which
has increased inflow into River
Krishna and its tributaries, have
submerged seven low-lying
bridges in Chikodi taluk.
The affected bridges are: Kallol-
Yadur, Sadalga-Borgaon, Karadga-
Bhoj, Bhojwadi-Kunnar, Sidnal-
Akkol, Jatrat-Bhiweshi and
Malikwad-Dattwad.
Alternative roads, however, are
being used to access nearby
villages.
TB dam level cheering
The Tungabhadra reservoir near
Hospet in Bellary district is just
four feet from reaching full
capacity. On Saturday, the water
level stood at 1,629.51 feet,
against the maximum of 1,633 feet.
The heavy inflow into the reservoir
is the result of heavy rainfall in the
Malnad districts.
The reservoir presently has a
storage of 86 tmc ft, the highest in
the last five years. The dam is the
lifeline of farmers in the districts of
Bellary, Raichur and Koppal. It is
likely to reach the brim by the end
of the month.
While the left bank canal of the
dam feeds water to the taluks of
Hospet, Siruguppa and Bellary, the
upper and lower right bank canals
irrigate areas in Andhra Pradesh.
The good water levels in the dam
means Bellary city will have no
drinking water problem.
D-K bears the brunt
Rainfall continued to lash
Dakshina Kannada district on
Saturday. The district has received
an average of 63.2 mm rainfall in
the last 24 hours. Bantwal taluk
received the highest of 73.8 mm
rainfall followed by Sullia 72.8 mm.
With the catchment areas receiving
good rainfall, the inflow of water
into Kumaradhara river has
increased, inundating the bridge
connecting Subramanya. The flood
water on the bridge receded after
midnight on Friday.
Woman dies
Kariyamma, 45, was crushed to
death when a wall of her house
collapsed at Kanivebilachi village
of Channagiri taluk in Davangere
district, late on Friday night.
Madikeri marooned
Heavy rainfall threw normal life out
of gear in Madikeri, Bhagamandala,
Shanthalli and Sampaje. Following
a landslide on the Mukkodlu-
Hammiyala road, the movement of
vehicles has been affected.
Shanthalli received the highest of
206 mm of rainfall, followed by
146.6 mm in Bhagamandala.
With the damage to electricity
poles, power supply has been
disrupted in a few villages in the
district. The district administration
has taken measures to shift
residents to safer places. Gruel
centres have been opened in
Madikeri and Karadigodu.
Deluge in Chikmagalur
Kalasa and Mudigere have reported
good rainfall. Movement of
vehicles on the Horanadu road was
cut off, with the Bhadra river
overflowing at Hebbole near
Kalasa.
Two persons suffered injuries
when lightning struck them at
Heggaravalli in Kirugunda Gram
Panchayat of Mudigere taluk. The
injured are Aithappa, 60, and his
wife Tulasi, 55.
Teerthahalli cut off
Heavy rainfall continued to lash
Teerthahalli taluk of Shimoga
district, throwing life out of gear.
Vehicular movement on the
Shimoga-Teerthahalli road was
suspended on Saturday as the
road near Mandagadde was
inundated. The movement of
vehicles on the alternative road
was also disrupted for a few hours
as a tree was uprooted at
Hanagerekatte village in the taluk.
Vehicular movement was disrupted
between Guddekeri and Agumbe as
the Nabala bridge was submerged
following heavy rain.
The ancient 'Rama mantapa’ in
Teerthahalli town is on the verge
of being
submerged due to incessant
rainfall.

It's official: No drought in state

BANGALORE: Drought is officially
over in Karnataka. With water
levels in all major dams almost to
the brim owing to heavy rains this
year, it brings an end to the two-
year drought period in the state.
In the summer before the 2013
assembly elections, drought had
officially hit 70 per cent of
Karnataka. State government had
declared 142 of the 176 taluks as
drought-affected and had sought Rs
4,500 crore relief from the Centre.
But the latest weekly update from
the Drought Monitoring Cell shows
drought in less than 13 per cent of
the state, while another 14 per cent
is seen as abnormally dry.
Till July end, the state government
and people in the state were afraid
of insufficient rains in Karnataka.
But the last 10 days has changed
the situation with heavy rains
being reported especially in the
catchments areas of all major
rivers.
Of the 15 major dams, four,
including Almatti dam across
Krishna in Bagalkot district, are on
high alert. Three more are on alert
warning. According to data by state
water resources department, 55
small and medium sized dams
received 100% of their storage
capacity, a first in two years.
Bangalore and Mysore can cheer as
storage level in the Krishnaraja
Sagara (KRS) Dam is set to touch
maximum 124 ft following good
rains in the catchment areas of
Cauvery in Kodagu.
Chief minister Siddaramaiah can
breathe easy now as it will help
meet Karnataka's water
commitment to Tamil Nadu.
Karnataka has to release about 194
tmc of water to Tamil Nadu by the
end of monsoon and has so far
released about 34 tmc.
The lifelines of north Karnataka -
Malaprabha, Ghataprabha and
Krishna - are flowing close to the
danger level after some good rains
and Maharashtra government's
decision to increase the discharge
from its dams.
92% sowing
Meanwhile 92% sowing in the state
was reported by the state
agriculture ministry. But the rain
also is creating planting delays for
some farmers. Gopal Gowda who
grows paddy and sugarcane on
about 33 acres in Mandya said
some of his land in a watershed is
covered in several feet of water
after about 10 inches of rain in the
past two weeks. He said he's not
worried yet, because with some
warm weather, he can still get his
crop in by mid-September.
Power woes eased
People can also heave a sigh of
relief as good rains have helped
ease the grim power situation. The
water levels in Linganamakki,
Sharavathi and Gerusoppe
reservoirs, whose hydel power
generating stations account for a
third of the state's power supply,
are all brimming now due to heavy
inflow. The demand for power in
the state too has decreased because
of overcast conditions.
* Vital stats
* All dams in state receive 80% to
100% of their total water storage
capacity
* From July 2-8, state recorded
96mm of rainfall as against normal
63 mm, an increase of 52%
* Rainfall for last quarter of 2011
lowest in north interior Karnataka
since 1970
* Kharif, rabi crops for 2011-12 had
failed. Kharif crop loss was Rs 4,245
crore

Rains batter Kodagu, north Karnataka

Monsoon continued to pummel parts of Karnataka on Friday pushing up water levels in major reservoirs.

With intermittent rainfall across Dakshina Kannada district, the water in Kumaradhara river reached danger level at the bridge near Kukke Subramanya. Any further rain would submerge the bridge snapping road connectivity between Subramanya and Mangalore. The bathing ghat at the temple town has already submerged.

Sky remained overcast in Mangalore throughout the day and the city received heavy rain in the evening. Guthigaru, Panja, Balpa, Yenekallu, Nettana, Bilinele, and other areas received good rainfall.

Sea erosion has intensified at Thenka Yermal near Padubidri. Strong waves have devoured coconut trees and a petty shop on the beach front. Boulders being used as walls to resist erosion have also been washed away.

Dakshina Kannada district received an average rainfall of 51.3 mm in the last 24 hours. Belthangdy recorded the highest -54.2 mm followed by Puttur - 53.9 mm. The district has received an average of 2031.4 mm rainfall since January this year.

Kodagu

Several parts of Kodagu district received heavy rain on Friday. There was widespread rain in Madikeri, Sampaje, Shanthalli, Kodlipet and Shanivarasanthe.

Cauvery is in spate at Triveni Sangama in Bhagamandala. However, there were no reports of submergence of any bridge or road in the district. Five persons sustained injuries when a tree fell on a house at Cherala-Srimangala village near Madikeri.

Shimoga

Monsoon gained momentum after a lull in Shimoga. Agumbe, Hulikallu, Yadur, Mastikatte, Nagara and other places in Western ghats received heavy rain raising the inflow into Linganamakki, Bhadra and Tunga reservoirs.

North Karnataka

Most of the places in North Karnataka received intermittent rains on Friday. Inflow into Vedaganga river in Chikodi taluk went up following copious rain in Konkan area of Maharashtra. Belgaum, Nippani, Bailahongal, Dharwad, Gadag, Haveri too received good rains.

Expect rain for two more days Bangalore, July 9, 2013, DHNS: Cool weather accompanied by moderate rainfall is expected to continue in the City for another two days.

On Tuesday evening, the City received about 10.6 mm of rainfall (as at 8.30 pm). The rainfall recorded was HAL (4.6 mm) and Yelahanka (3 mm). While the maximum temperature was 28.8 degrees Celsius, the minimum was 20.4 degrees Celsius. Met sources predicted that the City as well as various other parts of the State would get good amount of rainfall till July 11. Apart from the cloudy weather, the surface winds would be strong and gusty at times in the City, the sources said. “There is an upper air cyclonic circulation over west central Bay of Bengal, off North Andhra Pradesh coast, and it is extending up to 7.6 km above sea level. Due to this, cloudy weather and rainfall will prevail in Karnataka, specially coastal areas, Malnad and surrounding places,” said B Puttanna, director-in-charge of Indian Meteorological Department, Bangalore. “The normal amount of rainfall expected in the City this month is 109 mm. About 27.66 mm of rainfall has been received till now. It will be more than normal this month due to the cyclonic activity,” said Puttanna. The BBMP control rooms received a complaint about a tree being uprooted in N R Colony. http://www.deccanherald.com/content/343850/expect-rain-two-more-days.html

Downpour in coastal and south
interior Karnataka; more rain
predicted
Five persons were killed in flash
floods as rain continued to lash
coastal and south interior Karnataka
on Thursday. Hundreds were
evacuated from low-lying areas in
Dakshina Kannada and districts in
the Malnad region.
Mahabala Moolya (24) of Pararimane
in Bantwal drowned in a canal in the
early hours of Thursday. Kallandar
(21), an electrician, was washed
away in a stream near Harekala.
Razak Ibrahim (20) and Izaz
Aboobacker (19) from Bantwal in
Dakshina Kannada were also washed
away when they went to wash their
feet in a river.
Zulfikar (33), riding a two-wheeler
near Balehonnur in Chikmagalur
district, was washed away in floods
caused by a heavy downpour on
Wednesday night.
Brace for more
During the last 24 hours, Dakshina
Kannada, Udupi, Uttara Kannada,
Shimoga, Hassan, Chikmagalur and
Kodagu received “widespread
rainfall”, according to the Karnataka
State Natural Disaster Monitoring
Centre (KSNDMC). The
meteorological centre has forecast
“very heavy to heavy rainfall” in
coastal and south interior Karnataka
in the next 48 hours.
Parts of Dakshina Kannada received
“extremely heavy rainfall” on
Thursday, according to the
meteorological centre here.
Subrahmanya received 45 cm and
Dharmasthala 33 cm.
In Dakshina Kannada, people in
areas such as Kallapu on the
outskirts of Mangalore used boats to
reach safe areas, while officials and
Fire Services personnel evacuated
people in other areas. Several
houses collapsed and some bridges
were damaged in the deluge.
Officials have opened gruel centres
at many places.
Several areas along the Netravati,
which is in spate after incessant
rain in its catchment areas for the
last two days, were flooded. Its
tributary, the Kumaradhara, is also
flowing above the danger level.
In Hassan and Chikmagalur districts,
normal life was affected in several
parts. Low-lying areas, particularly
in Sakaleshpur, Alur in Hassan
district and Sringeri, Mudigere and
N.R. Pura taluks in Chikmagalur
district are inundated.
