Rains back after a lull in State BENGALURU: AUG 27, 2015,

Moderate to heavy rains lashed several parts of the State on Wednesday. After a lull, Shivamogga district received moderate to heavy rainfall. Hosanagar, Shivamogga, Sagar, Bhadravathi received heavy rains in the noon and the evening.

Several roads in Shivamogga city were waterlogged disrupting vehicular movement. Rainwater gushed into houses in low-lying areas. Shikaripur, Thirthahalli, Sorab also received good spell of rains.

Sweltering heat
The residents of Belagavi got a relief from sweltering heat with heavy rains lashing the City for a few hours. The showers brought down the mercury levels in the border city.

Bagalkot received drizzles throughout the day. Rains appeared after a break of nearly a week in Uttara Kannada district. Coastal towns such as Bhatkal, Honnavar, Ankola and Karwar received moderate rains. Sirsi, Yallapur and Siddapur had cloudy weather since morning.

Rain lashes Shivamogga, Hubli-Dharwad AUGUST 23, 2015, HUBBALLI/SHIVAMOGGA, DHNS

Rain lashed a few places in the State on Saturday. Dharwad witnessed downpour for more than half-an-hour, while Hubballi received heavy rainfall for more than 15 minutes.

After a gap of more than one-and-half-month, twin cities, Hubballi-Dharwad, witnessed heavy downpour on Friday.

Rainfall lashed the twin cities for more than one hour yesterday.
Showers continued on Saturday also, bringing much needed relief to the people, who had been experiencing 'summer-like' heat in the last one week.

Most of the roads in Dharwad were inundated. Gutters and drainages in Hubballi flooded giving a tough time for motorists.

Pedestrians had a harrowing time as most of the roads were submerged. People living in low lying areas had a tough time protecting their belongings from rain, as water gushed into their houses.

"Though belated rainfall might not help agriculture, it certainly helps bring down the steadily increasing temperature," said a resident of Hubballi.

Shivamogga

Moderate to heavy rainfall continued to lash the Malnad region on Saturday. Hosanagar, Thirthahalli, Shivamogga, Bhadravathi, Sagar and some parts of Sorab received intermittent rainfall.

Malnad region received a good spell of rain in the noon. It rained heavily towards evening in several parts of the district.

There has been no drastic rise in the water levels of the dams as the catchment area failed to receive copious rain.

Water level in Linganamakki dam stood at 1,786.85, against the maximum level of 1,819 feet.

The inflow of water was 5,951 cusecs and the outflow was 8,076 cusecs. The district witnessed cloudy weather throughout the day.

Rain throws traffic out of gear in City Bengaluru, Aug 22, 2015,

The moderate rains that lashed the City on Saturday evening threw traffic out of gear, inconveniencing commuters.
 Traffic was seen moving at snail’s pace in most parts of the City such as MG Road, Richmond Road, Double Road, Jayanagar 4th Block, KR Road, Sankey Road, Brigade Road and surrounding areas. According to the officials at Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike control room, a tree fall was reported near Ambedkar Medical College in Kaval Byrasandra. There was also a complaint of waterlogging at Opera Circle in Ashok Nagar. Commuters had a harrowing time in reaching their destinations as more than 1,000 BMTC buses have been deployed for BBMP elections.

The auto drivers made most of the opportunity by demanding exorbitant fare from the hapless commuters stuck in rain. The showers also affected the last-minute poll preparations of candidates as well as election officials. The Indian Meteorological Department has forecast rains on Saturday, the polling day for BBMP elections. Over the last few days the City was not seeing a rise in mercury levels, but on Friday evening this phenomenon changed.

“A low pressure area is likely to develop over north Bay of Bengal within the next three days. As a result of this City has been experiencing rainfall and will also experience rain on Saturday towards afternoon and evening,” said Dr Geeta Agnihotri, Director in-charge, IMD Bengaluru. Thus City was experiencing a rise an increase in temperature over the last 2-3 days and it was temporary.  Changes in weather and wind pattern are a common phenomenon during this season, she added. The IMD has forecast rain or thundershowers for Saturday and rains, if any, may affect the voter turnout for the BBMP elections.

Storage Status of 91 Important Reservoirs of the Country as on August 20, 2015

The Water storage available in 91 important reservoirs of the country as on August 20, 2015 was 91.073 BCM which is 58% of total storage capacity of these reservoirs. This storage is 88% of the storage of corresponding period of last year and 92% of storage of average of last ten years. The present storage position during current year is better than the storage position of last year and is also better than the storage of average of last ten years.

The total storage capacity of these 91 reservoirs is 157.799 BCM which is about 62% of the total storage capacity of 253.388 BCM which is estimated to have been created in the country.

REGION WISE STORAGE STATUS:

NORTHERN REGION 
The northern region includes States of Himachal Pradesh, Punjab and Rajasthan. There are 6 reservoirs having total storage capacity of 18.01 BCM under CWC monitoring in this region. As per Reservoir Storage Bulletin dated 20.08.2015, the total storage available in these reservoirs is 16.26 BCM which is 90% of total storage capacity of these reservoirs. The storage during corresponding period of last year was 78% and average storage of last ten years during corresponding period was 71% of storage capacity of these reservoirs. Thus, storage during current year is better than the corresponding period of last year and is also better than the average storage of last ten years during the corresponding period.

EASTERN REGION 
The Eastern region includes States of Jharkhand, Odisha, West Bengal and Tripura. There are 15 reservoirs having total storage capacity of 18.83 BCM under CWC monitoring in this region. As per Reservoir Storage Bulletin dated 20.08.2015, the total storage available in these reservoirs is 9.43 BCM which is 50% of total storage capacity of these reservoirs. The storage during corresponding period of last year was 64% and average storage of last ten years during corresponding period was 52% of storage capacity of these reservoirs. Thus, storage during current year is less than the corresponding period of last year and is also less than the average storage of last ten years during the corresponding period.

WESTERN REGION 
The Western region includes States of Gujarat and Maharashtra. There are 27 reservoirs having total storage capacity of 27.07 BCM under CWC monitoring in this region. As per Reservoir Storage Bulletin dated 20.08.2015, the total storage available in these reservoirs is 15.89 BCM which is 59% of total storage capacity of these reservoirs. The storage during corresponding period of last year was 61% and average storage of last ten years during corresponding period was 66% of storage capacity of these reservoirs. Thus, storage during current year is less than the storage of last year and is also less than the average storage of last ten years.

CENTRAL REGION 
The Central region includes States of Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh. There are 12 reservoirs having total storage capacity of 42.30 BCM under CWC monitoring in this region. As per Reservoir Storage Bulletin dated 20.08.2015, the total storage available in these reservoirs is 31.36 BCM which is 74% of total live storage capacity of these reservoirs. The storage during corresponding period of last year was 73% and average storage of last ten years during corresponding period was 53% of storage capacity of these reservoirs. Thus, storage during current year is better than the storage of last year and is also better than the average storage of last ten years.

SOUTHERN REGION 
The Southern region includes States of Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, (Two combined projects in both states) Karnataka, Kerala and Tamil Nadu. There are 31 reservoirs having total storage capacity of 51.59 BCM under CWC monitoring in this region. As per Reservoir Storage Bulletin dated 20.08.2015, the total storage available in these reservoirs is 18.13 BCM which is 35% of total storage capacity of these reservoirs. The storage during corresponding period of last year was 58% and average storage of last ten years during corresponding period was 69% of storage capacity of these reservoirs. Thus, storage during current year is less than the corresponding period of last year and is also less than the average storage of last ten years during the corresponding period.

States having better storage than last year for corresponding period are Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Rajasthan, West Bengal, Tripura, Gujarat, Uttarakhand and Madhya Pradesh. States having lesser storage than last year for corresponding period are Jharkhand, Odisha, Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh, Uttar Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana (Two combined project in both states), , Karnataka, Kerala and Tamil Nadu.

MANGALURU: Isamudra in Chitradurga taluk of Chitradurga district recorded maximum rainfall of 84mm in the last 24-hours up to 8.30am on August 20. Arakeri hobli in Devadurga taluk of Raichur district recorded maximum temperature of 41.1°C at 6pm on August 19. Santhahalli hobli in Sompwarpet taluk of Kodagu district recorded lowest minimum temperature of 17.8°C at 6.30am on August 20, G S Srinivasa Reddy, director, KSNDMC said.

Karnataka for the period from August 14 to August 20 recorded deficit rainfall of 36%. Against normal weighted average rainfall of 48mm in south-interior, north-interior, malnad and coastal parts, state recorded rainfall of 31mm. For 24-hours period ending 8.30am on August 20, four geographical regions received 5mm actual weighted average rainfall against normal weighted average rainfall of 6mm, a 17% deficit departure from weighted-average normal.
