Bengaluru records highest rainfall in at least 115 years

BENGALURU: The incessant rainfall over the past two months has made 2017 the wettest year for Bengaluru city. The
annual rainfall for the city , 1615.2mm as on Saturday morning, is the highest ever, more than 1606.8 mm, the earlier record, in 2005. The Indian Meteorological Department has rainfall data for 115 years.
L Ramesh Babu, an IMD director, Bengaluru city, said Friday night showers helped set the new record and with more than two and a half months left in the year, the annual rainfall could be much higher.

A senior official at the meteorological department said Bengaluru city is facing a unique weather system wherein the south-west
monsoon has extended its stint and soon the north-east monsoon will arrive. "The combination of the weather system coupled by low pressure situation created in the Arabian Sea is resulting in showers over interior Karnataka and Bengaluru falls in this region," he added. The officer said there has been record rainfall in Bengaluru city after 1990.

"One has to analyse the possible relation to climate change as extreme weather events are related to it. Bengaluru is a growing city and has been experiencing heat island effect which further results in rainfall after a prolonged harsh summer or dry run," he added. The Friday night rain which wreaked havoc in west Bengaluru families saw major political parties making a beeline to express their condolences to the affected families and provide compensation.

2017 is Bengaluru’s all-time wettest year

City receives 1,621.6 mm rain this year, surpassing the record set in 2005
With rains continuing to lash the city, Bengaluru galloped to an all-time record for the wettest year.
By Saturday evening, the city had witnessed 1,621.6 mm of rainfall this year, surpassing the current all-time record of around 1,600 mm in 2005, according to India Meteorological Department data.
In the past two months, Bengaluru received, on average, more than the rainfall it would see in a year.
But in the wake of this was destruction and loss of lives. At least 15 people have died in rain-related incidents this year.
Apart from this, battered infrastructure was held responsible for the deaths of five people in pothole-related accidents.
Late Friday, a woman was rescued from her car after it got caught in the swirling currents over the Vrishbhavathi bridge at Nayanadanahalli.
The push to the record was seen on Friday night when the city saw 34 mm of rainfall in the IMD station at Palace Road.
However, in west Bengaluru, the story was worse. Nandini Layout saw 95 mm of rain, much of it on Friday evening, while 13 gauges operated by the Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre saw excess of 64.5 mm of rainfall.
Chaos reigned in the areas in the aftermath, with numerous households struggling to remove sewage water that entered their homes.
In the midst of this, politicians across the spectrum, who landed there in an attempt to assuage the misery, received a earful from residents.
The body of Vasudev, 32, a priest who fell into a rajakaluve in Kurubarahalli on Friday was found on Saturday morning — a km away from his residence — by the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) who had conducted search operations through the night. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah assured compensation for the family.
NDRF personnel are continuing the search for the bodies of Ningamma, 57, and her daughter Pushpa, 22, who were reportedly washed away in a drain at Laggere.

Only 66 mm rain needed to break 2005 record

Bengaluru: With the southwest monsoon continuing to stay heavy over interior regions of Karnataka, the city is expected to record the highest ever annual rainfall this year.
Figures from India Meteorological Department (IMD) indicate that the city received 1,540 mm of rain as on Saturday, moving closer to the highest ever rainfall of 1,606.8 mm recorded in 2005.
Srinivasa Reddy, director, Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre (KSNDMC) believes the record will be easily crossed this year, as two and a half more months remain. “As per the intensity of the rainfall we have been witnessing the arrival of monsoon this year, the figures of 2005 will soon be passed, most probably by the end of this month itself,” he said.
Bengaluru North badly hit
Bengaluru North recorded heavy rainfall on Friday evening with Nandini Layout topping the list (95 mm), closely followed by Mariyappanapalya and Nagapura (both 91mm) and Hosahalli (89.5 mm). Reddy added, “Friday rains were of a rare phenomenon, as we received almost more than 90 mm rain in an hour’s time. Even though the intensity of rainfall is not usually recorded, heavy rainfall between 6 and 7 pm helped us reach this rare observation.”
October rain twice average
Rainfall in the first half of October (311mm), has nearly doubled the month’s average (168 mm). Saturday was calmer with no heavy downpour, weather experts predict “moderate to heavy rainfall” till Oct. 18. “Temperatures are likely to be between 20 and 26 degree C for the next 3 days. One or two spells of rains/thundershowers in some areas can also be expected,” said an IMD official.
BMTC fuel tank flooded
Around 40,000 litres of fuel worth Rs 22.8 lakh went waste at Kathriguppe bus depot (No 13), after rainwater seeped into the fuel tanks, following heavy rains on Friday. 50 Volvo buses stayed off services on Saturday as water mixed fuel was filled in them resulting in snags.

Rain to continue till Deepavali in the city

Wet cloudy weather hovering over the city for the last two months may end only after Deepavali as the rains are likely to dampen the festivities this year.
According to a scientist from Karnataka State Natural Disaster Management Centre (KSNDMC), a cyclone from the Bay of Bengal is expected to hit the east coast of Andhra Pradesh and Odisha by October 18 or 19. The cyclone is likely to absorb the moisture towards it, after which the city may get to see the sunshine.
S S M Gavaskar, a scientist at KSNDMC said that moderate to heavy rains will continue for another 4-5 days in parts of the city. He said that due to the active cyclonic weather conditions which is existing both in the Bay of Bengal and the Arabian Sea, there is a trough (low atmospheric pressure area) formed over the south peninsula region which is causing heavy rains.
Gavaskar said the South-West monsoon has not existed yet and it is still lingering around. Ideally, the end of September is the end of monsoons rains, but this year it has been an extended one. The retreating monsoons or the North-East monsoons normally begin in October, but this year, the retreating monsoons are yet to arrive.
According to the statistics reported in Bengaluru Urban, the cyclonic rains which began in mid of August recorded an average of 206 mm as against the normal expected rainfall of 120 mm in just 15 days which is 72 % more departure than normal. The month of September recorded an average of 383 mm of rainfall as against 174 mm expected which is 120 % more departure than normal. In October, till date, KSNDMC has recorded 188 mm of rainfall as against 94 mm expected which is 100% more departure than normal.
Mixed reaction to the heavy rains
The scientist said that Varuna Mitra, the call centre exclusively used by farmers in the state has received all kinds of response from the citizens. He said that unlike the people in Bengaluru who are suffering due to water logging and flooding due to lack of outlets for the rainwater to flow, the farmers are very happy with the rainfall.
Gavaskar said that even though some of the farmers have lost their crops due to heavy rains, they are happy that their wells and lakes are full. He said their centre has received calls from farmers from Chitradurga, Tumkur, Kolar and other districts where lakes which had dried up for nearly 30 years has now been filled and at places even breached.

Drought districts come alive with sound of rain

But the jubilation over lakes and rivers brimming over is tempered with extensive crop loss across the State

Lakes arid for years have filled up, dry riverbeds are seeing a surge of water, and the State’s rural landscape has come alive in the recent rain. But, this optimism is tempered by the reality of crop loss.

While officials said crop loss was inevitable considering the intensity and unseasonal characteristics of the rainfall, the delay in rain has seen a shortfall in sowing. For instance, by the end of September, the State had seen 13 lakh hectares less cultivation of kharif crop than the target set, and 5 lakh hectares lower than normal.

However, for those who did cultivate, the rain has wiped out significant crops. Critical crops such as ragi, maize, cotton, and groundnut have seen huge losses in yield as heavy rainfall has flattened cultivations.

In the Hyderabad-Karnataka region, cotton crop sown over 4 lakh acres has been the worst hit. Farmers are just unable to harvest it. “I have 4.5 acres of land and cultivated only Bt cotton on it. The crop was so healthy that each plant had over 30 fully-grown bolls. Before they could open and fetch fluffy cotton, the rain destroyed them. All the cotton bolls in my field are rotten. In some fields in my village, the seeds have germinated destroying cotton around them,” says Jayappaswamy from Udumgal-Khanapur village in Raichur district. The crop loss puts in doubt his ability to repay the nearly ₹1.8-lakh loan taken from a local bank.

While the fate of chilli, pearl millet and sunflower — all of which are ready for harvest — is on similar lines, there is anxiety over the loss to the region’s biggest produce: red gram.

At present, in Kalaburagi, just around 100 acres have been destroyed after the overflow of Dotikola dam and Tumkunat lake in Chincholi taluk. However, if the rain continues, as is expected over the coming days, the damage could be worse. Agriculture Department officials say around 25% of the crop, which is cultivated over 8 lakh acres, could be lost.

“The red gram in low-lying areas will in anyway be lost. If the rain continues, the crop in the other areas will also be destroyed as the over moisture will cause the crop to turn yellow and get destroyed,” Maruti Manpade, a Kalaburagi-based farmers’ leader associated with Karnataka Pranta Raitha Sangha, said.

In Belagavi, for instance, around 9,500 hectares of sugarcane, soya, cotton, groundnut and maize were damaged. The rain may even impact the rabi season, which is generally expected to yield bumper crops due to the improved reservoir and groundwater levels.

“Fields are required to be dry for cleaning and sowing. But, these rains have kept fields completely wet and triggered dense growth of weeds. No activity can be taken up in such wet lands,” said Chamarasa Malipatil, a Raichur-based farmer leader.

However, interspersed with the worry of the moment is the optimism for the future.

Lakes are brimming over and the reservoirs are in a good shape. Irrigation needs for the coming months, and drinking water for the harsh summer is all but guaranteed.

Blanket of green over the drylands of Karnataka

Hundreds of villagers from the arid Bagepalli region make their way up the narrow road that leads to Chitravati dam off National Highway 7. As the procession walks around the bund, their excitement heightens. The narrow dam bund reveals water stretching out far into the horizon. Twenty-foot-high telephone and electric poles on the banks of the reservoir have been submerged. Near the pumping house of the 15-year-old dam, a goat has been sacrificed, even while rituals of gratitude are performed.

“I haven’t seen the reservoir ever this full. It is a moment of celebration because we know we will get drinking water for at least two years,” said Manjunath from Bagepalli. Though his ragi fields have been destroyed by the unseasonal rain, he can’t hide his joy: “We are set now. By the time the water dries out, the Yettinahole river diversion project will be implemented in Chickballapur district.”

The unseasonal rain that has lashed the State has placed a blanket of green over the drylands of Karnataka. Unlike any other rain in recent history, this year’s monsoons have been particularly intense in drought-prone areas. After all, the deficit regions in Karnataka are coastal and Malnad; while the plains of Central and Northern Karnataka have seen excess rainfall.

Take Chickballapur district for instance, which had been declared drought-hit for six years now. This year, the past two months have seen 60% rain more than the “normal”.

In Kolar, which has witnessed 116% excess rain compared to the “normal”, Ramasagar lake and the critical Bethamangala reservoir have filled up after years. The Palar river is seeing significant flow too. In Chitradurga and Tumakuru, both drought-prone districts that have been stricken with drinking water crisis over the past four years, have seen rainfall in excess of 115% and 75% respectively. Even smaller rivers such as Suvarnamukhi and Vedavathi are in spate here.

In North Karnataka, the rains have reversed the touch-and-go water situation seen over the past four drought years.

Lightning claims 75 lives in Karnataka this year (2017)

BENGALURU: Rain after the drought was a welcome relief for the state this year. However, it also led to tragedies. Lightning strikes have claimed as many as 75 lives till date this year. Maximum deaths in the state have been reported from Mysuru (12), Haveri (7), Dharwad and Kalaburagi (6).

On an average, more than 100 people are dying every year in the state due to lightning strikes since 7 years. As many as 711 people have died in past seven years. Recent deaths of six members in Periyapatna of Mysuru district and Koppal have triggered panic among the villagers. According to National Crime Records Bureau, every year around two thousand people die due to lightning in the country.,

The experts say that more number of people die in the villages as they are mostly working in the fields. Also whenever there is rain, they take shelter under the trees. As trees are good conductors of electricity, people who take shelter under them are vulnerable. Even in cities, those taking shelters under trees are vulnerable to lightning strikes.

“People have to take shelter under protected roofs and not trees. Even if they are inside a car, the doors have to be closed,” said Srinivas Reddy, director of Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre (KSNDMC).

An app to alert on lightning

Soon, a mobile application will alert on lightning with the help of censors. The project is expected to be implemented in next three months. “The censors will have the capacity to cover 100 km radius area and they can alert about lightning and thunder at least 40 minutes before,” said Srinivas Reddy.  “Since many farmers are not much familiar with the mobile  applications, we would inform 22 lakh villagers in the state through our helplines, police and Panchayat Development Officers.”

BETTER SAFE THAN SORRY

If you are indoors

Prevent using electronic items, including corded phones or computers as electrical wires can conduct lightning
Don’t use your cell phone
Metal pipes can also catch the lightning and it is dangerous to wash hand, shower and wash dishes or do laundry whenever there is lightning
If you are outside
Take shelter in an enclosed building rather than under trees or open garage

Get off bicycles and motorcycles

If you are not able to find a shelter, squat down and put your hands on your knees with head in between to make yourself a smaller target
Do not stay in group and spread out whenever there is chances of lightning or thunderstorm..

IMD, GHMC join hands to fight urban flooding :- KSNDMC

HYDERABAD: Director General of Indian Meteorological Department, KJ Ramesh, during his visit to city on Thursday, reiterated that Telangana government can take lessons from Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Center’s (KSNDMC) initiative of setting up urban flood warning system in Bengaluru. His suggestion came against the backdrop of a report in these columns published on Thursday where it was advised that the team could visit Bengaluru to learn lessons from KSNDMC.
Addressing media, he said that IMD Hyderabad has formed a joint coordination team with Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation for fighting urban flooding in Hyderabad. Ramesh advised the team to visit Karnataka to study telemetry rain gauge network in the state which apart from giving real time rain data every 15 minutes also gives out flood warning and replicate the system in Hyderabad.
Ramesh said, “Karnataka has an idealistic telemetry rain gauge network. There are thousands of rain gauges in Karnataka which update data on rain every 15-minutes and SMS alert is sent to district collectors and other concerned officials in case of emergency.’
He further said that in future there will be decline in number of rainy days but frequency of high intensity rainfall will increase and it is a phenomenon that will be experienced across the world due to global warming. Ramesh said that by 2018 Indian Air Force in Dundigal will come up with a new Doppler Weather Radar, which will be a stand by for Hyderabad IMD, which also has one.
Inform before floods, not after : Ex NDMA vice-chairman
Former National Disaster Management Authority, Vice Chairman, Marri Shashidhar Reddy, who was also present for the meeting said, “There is a need for issuing alerts on flooding in advance to people rather than telling them not to leave their houses after the floods have already wrecked havoc and people are stuck in traffic jams, like it happened recently in Hyderabad. Rainfall warnings should also be more city specific rather than just issuing warning for the entire IMD sub-division of Telangana.
