HEAT IS ON, BENGALURU

With mercury soaring by the day, weatherman says it could hit 39° this season

The city is experiencing a rise in mercury level for the last one week. And it's going to get worse. Weathermen say the temperature is expected to gradually rise from now on and brace yourself for warmer months, from March to May.

The city witnessed 32 degrees Celsius on Sunday and Monday, while Ballari district witnessed 37 degrees and most of the coastal regions in the state too saw a rise in the mercury level. “The temperature is still normal as far as our prediction for February is concerned,” said Sundar M Metri, director and scientist India Meteorological Department (IMD).

Though Bengalureans are feeling the heat, state officials say this feeling is because of the transition period. Srinivas Reddy, director, Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre (KSNDMC) told, “March is nearing and summer is setting in slowly. The maximum temperature has gone up, but still evenings are really cold. While we still call it a normal temperature, people feel this uneasy because it is a transition period from winter to summer.”

He added, “Usually, the end of February is like this and actual summer is from March to April, where we are expecting the temperature to rise gradually from now on.

While 34 degrees Celsius is the normal during the summers, it can go up to 38 or 39 this time.”

March to May is considered really hot. MeT men have predicted the temperature to go up, experts say, the coastal districts will see a drastic increase in the temperature.

Another scientist from KSNDMC said, “In coastal districts, the temperature is already increasing and from now onwards it will keep going up. From March 1st week, within next 6-10 days, the mercury level will rise."

The KSNDMC scientist added, “The temperature touched 30 degree Celsius from February 16 and 17 and from then there is a slow increase."

However, while this is a prelude to summers, Sundar added, “We cannot consider it as summer as of now, but when there is a clear sky, definitely there will be heat as well. The effect of concretisation and high-rise buildings with glasses add up to the rise in the temperature in the city limits,” added Sundar. Brace yourself up for a harsh summer.

Drink plenty of water: Students advised

The exam season is set to begin from March 1 and students will will have to face physical and mental burden this year, keeping in mind the rising mercury levels.
C Shikha, PU director said, has some advice for the students: “Keeping in mind the weather conditions, we advise the students to wear comfortable clothes to examination halls. They also need to ensure that footwear is also comfortable bearing this weather conditions.” She added, “Another main thing is to keep themselves hydrated and drink a lot of water. They can even carry water bottles to the halls though it is available in exam centres. Before and after the examinations, students need to focus on nutritious food habits."

Mysterious sound sends shock waves among people in Mysuru

MYSURU: A mysterious sound, akin to a bomb explosion, triggered panic among the people at different localities in the city on Thursday. While the suspicion of an earthquake grew stronger, the denial of any such occurrence that came from the Karnataka Engineering Research Station (KERS) near KRS dam in Mandya district where a seismic station has been set up, put to rest mounting worries.

The incident that occurred between 12.30 pm and 1 pm sent shock waves for sometime among the residents who ran out of their houses in panic. They shared their experiences with equally frightened neighbours. The sound triggered alarm at Vidyaranyapuram, K R Mohalla, Devaraja Mohalla, Kuvempunagar, Saraswatipuram, Dattagalli, K G Koppal, Jayalakshmipuram, Gokulam, V V Puram, Vijayanagar, Yelwal and several other localities.

Gowramma, a 60-year-old woman and a resident of Eighth Cross, ‘M’ Block, Kuvempunagar, told EThe New Indian Express: “I was all alone at the house when I heard a sound. Fearing danger, I ran out of the house only to hear my neighbour Sharadamma screaming, who is also a senior citizen. Initially, we mistook it for a transformer blast.”

Another neighbour Kalavathi who shared a similar experience said: “It sounded like an explosion mostly heard during blasting of stones.” Shivanand, a retired government employee who was visiting his sister’s house in the same locality, said, “I also experienced slight tremors.”

K V R Chowdhary, a senior geologist, who also heard a similar sound while in the office, said,  “Following queries that came from different quarters, we had contacted Karnataka State Natural Disaster Management Cell (KSNDMC), Bengaluru. They subsequently contacted KERS in Mandya where a Richter scale is available. There is no record of any quake on the scale.”

Chowdhary, who appealed to the people to maintain calm, also allayed fears saying that there is no possibility of an earthquake in the Deccan plateau due to the rough terrain with rocky surface.

As city hits 30 degrees,

The cloudy weather had not reduced the temperature significantly, although the humidity went up to 59 per cent on Friday, giving the impression of heat.

India Meteorological Department, director, and scientist, Sundar M Metri said: “The system is changing. The low pressure over the Arabian Sea is reducing, which is resulting in a rise in temperature.”

“On Friday, we recorded a humidity of 59 per cent and that is the reason there is this uncomfortable feeling. This is not heat; it’s the humidity that’s making you sweat,” he added.

Officials also said that rainfall is likely in some parts of the state. Srinivas Reddy, a scientist at the Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre (KSNDMC), said: “Rainfall is likely in some parts of the state. The minimum temperature has been rising since the last two to three days. When it gets cloudy, the temperature starts rising.”

So, has the summer started to set in yet? Legend has it that after Mahashivaratri, the summer flags off in the southern part of India. With only a couple of days left for the festival, is the change around the corner?

“Summer isn’t here yet,” says Reddy, adding, however, that the lows are over. Temperature will only be rising from here on.

India Meteorological Department (IMD) in its forecast said: “Light to very light rain occurred at many places over Lakshadweep; at isolated places over coastal and North Interior Karnataka, Rayalaseema, Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Puducherry.”

Met officials said thunderstorm was likely for some areas in Bengaluru, Mysuru, Tumakuru, Hassan and Shravanabelagola.

Bengalureans who’ve started using their ACs and fans at home don’t need an official confirmation that the winter is on its way out. The weatherman, however, is already predicting a gradual increase in temperature in the days to come.

On Thursday and Friday, the department recorded a temperature of 30 degree Celsius, and is expecting a gradual rise from here on.

BENGALURU Unseasonal rain cools Bengaluru

After days of searing heat, Wednesday saw the city under a cover of clouds. Temperature during the day fell while the slightest of rain cooled down a few areas.
Rain in February is unusual. On average, just 5.4 mm of rainfall is received in Bengaluru, but no rainfall was seen in the past four years.
It was a blink-and-miss drizzle in most part of the city, but certain pockets recorded significant rainfall.
According to the Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre, the highest rainfall was 25mm in Sarakki in south Bengaluru. Avalahalli and Bidarahalli recorded more than 15mm of rainfall. In Bengauru Rural, one of their monitoring stations recorded rainfall of 37.50mm.
Sundar Metri, Director of IMD in Bengaluru, said the State was enveloped in cloud cover because of a trough of low pressure coming in from Maldives as well as a low pressure system in south western Bay of Bengal. “We can expect light rain in the coming 48 hours. The day-time temperature will dip while in south Karnataka, the night-time temperature will rise,” he said.

Light rain in many parts of Karnataka

Light showers were reported from different parts of the state, including capital Bengaluru on Wednesday.
Hubballi-Dharwad and surrounding areas received light drizzles for around half-an-hour in the afternoon.
The weather was cloudy since morning, and there was drizzling after 2 pm. Drizzling was reported from rural areas of the district also.
Light drizzles were reported from Uttara Kannada, Belagavi, Bagalkot and Vijayapura districts too.
Kalaburagi city received light rain in the afternoon. The sky remained overcast since morning. As a result, there was a drop in the temperature.
Kollegal, Hanur, Gundlupet and surrounding areas in Chamarajanagar district received moderate to heavy rainfall, bringing respite from the heat on Wednesday.
It rained for more than an hour and a half from 1.30 pm. Bandipur, Raghavapura, Baragi of Gundlupet taluk received moderate rain on Tuesday night.
The brief spell of rain has brought cheers to the Forest department officials, who were worried about the incidents of forest fire, of late. Bandipur National Park, Cauvery and Male Mahadeshwara wildlife sanctuaries too received rains on Tuesday night and Wednesday.
Drizzling was reported across Gadag district. But the rain caused concern among the farmers, who believe showers prior to Holi were an indication of poor rain this time.

Bengaluru saw coldest February night in ten years on Saturday

Published: 05th February 2018 02:39 AM  |

BENGALURU: The city, which is experiencing a cold spell, witnessed one of the coldest nights of this winter on Saturday night with the minimum temperature touching 13.4 degrees Celsius. This temperature was also the lowest temperature for February in the last one decade, as per data from the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD).

The IMD website also says the minimum temperature is 3 degrees Celsius below expected temperature. The reading recorded at HAL Airport was even lower at 11.2 degreess Celsius while it was 11.8 degreess Celsius at Kempegowda International Airport.

The weather forecast on the IMD website says the city will continue to be colder than usual in the coming days, with the minimum temperatures forecast over the next week ranging from 14-17 degrees Celsius. Prior to this, the lowest temperature recorded in the city in February was 14 degrees Celsius in 2011 and 2012.

G M Srinivasa Reddy, Dirtector, Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre (KSNDMC), said an anti-cyclonic circulation was causing the colder-than-usual weather, not just in the city, but across the state.

Can’t call this cold wave: Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre

Published: 05th February 2018 02:47 AM

BENGALURU: G M Srinivasa Reddy, Director, Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre (KSNDMC), said, “The circulation is bringing cold waves from the North and North-Western parts of the country.”

Reddy said the conditions in the city cannot be termed as a cold wave. It is categorised as such only if the temperature drops at least 5 degrees Celsius. However, in some parts of North Karnataka, temperatures were 3-5 degrees Celsius below expected levels, while in the South, the difference was 1.5-3 degrees Celsius, Reddy said.

From 8.30am on Friday to 8.30am on Saturday, the lowest temperature of 10.4 degrees Celsius in the state was recorded in Kodagu district, as per KSNDMC. The minimum temperature for the earlier 24 hour-period was 9.2 degrees Celsius. According to Varuna Mitra, the  interactive weather help-desk of KSNDMC, Chilakalanerpu in Chikkaballapur recorded minimum of 6.3 degrees Celsius.
