Good rains so far in Karnataka, but drought-like conditions still persist

Good rains so far in Karnataka, but drought-like conditions still persist

Despite torrential rains and reservoir levels filling up in Karnataka, the state may still not be able to escape drought-like conditions.

Monsoon rains lashed the coastal districts on Tuesday, with 84.62mm rain recorded in Udupi and 74.68mm recorded in Dakshina Kannada.

This led to a spike in reservoir levels since the coastal areas fall under the catchment areas.

As per the Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre (KSNDMC), the Krishnaraja Sagar (K.R.S) reservoir recorded a water inflow level of 21,179 cusecs. Considering that a 4-year-high inflow of 28,096 cusecs was achieved only two weeks ago, the dams are full in the state.

There were also significant differences between reservoir levels this time last year. The Tungabhadra dam was almost 100 feet better off this year, with a water level of 1605.95 feet compared to 1570 feet last year. The Linganamakki dam also holds 49.10 TMC of water this year as compared to 39.71 TMC last year.

However, the Managing Director of KSNDMC, Srinivas Reddy was still cautiously optimistic about the entire situation. And he still cannot definitively state that Karnataka will escape its three-year drought.

He said that the state requires a total of 300 TMC of water across the months of June to September to say that it was a drought-free year.

Reddy asserts, “We have received good rainfall in Malnad and coastal regions. That is why all the reservoirs are full. But we still require some more rainfall. We have not seen too much rain in the past 10 days across Karnataka. Only these past few days it has crept up a bit. We still require more water in July.”

This is especially true since Karnataka has to release some water to Tamil Nadu in July as part of the Cauvery Water Tribunal’s decision.

The Kabini reservoir, already at almost full capacity, has been releasing excess water to the neighbouring state.

Reddy however conceded that it has not been a bad year as far as rains are concerned. He asserted, “Relatively this year, compared to previous years, it has been very good in terms of rainfall.”

Good monsoon takes a rain check on Bengaluru city

Good monsoon takes a rain check on Bengaluru city

Monsoon pattern changes in South-Interior Karnataka, heavy rainfall still eludes region.

28th June 2018 02:58 AM

BENGALURU: While the extent of effects of climate change has become a topic of global debate, its impacts are being felt even in South-Interior Karnataka where Bengaluru is located.

Despite the arrival of monsoon, rainfall in the region, including in Bengaluru, has been restricted to brief spells in the evenings. The reason is reportedly a gradually changing monsoon pattern over the past many years, say weathermen. This has resulted in the weakening of South-West monsoon and strengthening of pre-monsoon in South-Interior parts of Karnataka.

In spite of having received heavier than usual pre-monsoon rain, South- Interior parts of Karnataka, including Bengaluru, have received comparatively low rainfall since the monsoon reached the region on June 3. Professor HS Shivaramu, head, Agro-Meteorology Department, University of Agricultural Sciences, Bengaluru, said this phenomenon is not an anomaly, but the continuation of a trend formed over the past many years.

Prof Shivaramu said human activities such as deforestation had caused this shift. “The South-West monsoon arrives here via coastal Karnataka and Malnad, but now those areas are getting most of the rain. We keep instructing farmers to change their cropping patterns to match the weather patterns,” he added.
Confirming this, Project Scientist (Hydrologist) at Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre (KSNDMC) Shubha Avinash said, “The monsoon pattern has been such that as soon as it reaches here, there is good rainfall for a week to 10 days, after which it takes a break, followed by good rains again in July.”

She said as per an earlier forecast, heavier rainfall in the region was to return by June 24, but did not.
Mahesh Palawat, Chief Meteorologist at Skymet, a private weather services firm, said the current conditions of low rain were due to the lack of significant weather system developing over Southern parts of the Bay of Bengal. “Systems formed over the Arabian Sea normally move away from the coast towards the North-West, and draw moisture away from interior parts of the peninsula, hence reducing rain here,” he said.

Sunil M Gavaskar, a scientist at KSNDMC, said as per information available for the next one week, the monsoon won’t become active until then and as per a long-range forecast prediction, it might get revived in July. However, statistics for the amount of rainfall for Bengaluru Urban and rural districts indicate normal to surplus rainfall during the monsoon. Gavaskar attributed this to the good rainfall received during the first two weeks of June.

Karnataka: Heavy shower disrupts normal life in 3 districts :: Incessant rains throw life out of gear in Kodagu

Karnataka: Heavy shower disrupts normal life in 3 districts

 Jun 14, 2018, 10:01 IST

MYSURU: Heavy rain continued in Shivamogga, Kodagu and Chikkamagaluru districts on Wednesday. Even though no casualty was reported, normal life was totally disrupted. All major rivers of the region are flowing above the danger mark. In Mudigere, the national highway authorities have taken up repair work of the Charmadi Ghat road which was closed for vehicular movement till Thursday night. According to sources, fresh landslides were reported from hairpin curves 2 and 3.

The highest rainfall 382 mm was recorded at B Shettigeri village near Virajpet followed by 311mm in Madikeri city. Ponnampet recorded 252mm rainfall.

The copious rainfall in Malnad region of the state, including Shivamogga, Uttara Kannada and Kodagu as well as Wayanad (in Kerala) has helped all major dams including Linganamakki, KRS, Hamavati, and Kabini get water. The inflow to Linganamakki dam was 41,400 cusecs while it was 37,946 cusecs at Hemavati and 22,871 cusecs at KRS, 23,487 cusecs at Kabini and 21,968 cusecs at Bhadra dam in Shivamogga. Experts said if it continues to rain like this, all dams of the state could get filled by month-end.

Srinivasa Reddy director, Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Committee (KSNDMC), attributed the huge inflow to good pre-monsoon rain. "Generally, the state's dams fill up around end-July. If the rain continues like this, our dams may get filled up as early as June-end which is good news for both farmers and crores of people who depend on them for drinking water," he said.
According to the authorities, record inflow of water into the Linganamakki dam is expected to allay fear of a power crisis in the upcoming winter and summer. "Good rainfall is always a big relief for all," said an officer of the KSNDMC.
Heavy rainfall in Wayanad area of Kerala and Kodagu district has resulted in heavy inflow in two major rivers of South Karnataka i.e. Cauvery and Kapila. Since June 1, the Wayanad region received 214mm rainfall resulting in a flood-like situation in both rivers.
Farmers are happy with the rainfall. "Water was not released this summer from KRS dam to many canals for fear of a water crisis. Good pre-monsoon rainfall saved the crops. If dams get filled, we can release water to Tamil Nadu and there may not be another dispute in this summer," said Rangegowda, a sugarcane grower from Srirangapatna

Incessant rains throw life out of gear in Kodagu

MYSURU,  JUNE 14, 2018 00:00 IST

They were widespread and uniform across the district
Rainfall in Kodagu continues to be heavy with the district receiving 102.68 mm of it during the 24-hour period ending 8.30 a.m. on Wednesday and throwing life out of gear.

Rainfall was uniform and widespread across the district. Srimangala received 320 mm of rainfall, Hudikeri 318.5 mm, and Bhagamandala 131.4 mm rainfall during the same period and was the heaviest so far during the current season.

Meanwhile, the body of a person who was feared dead on Tuesday, was retrieved on Wednesday. He was identified as Sharath, 24, from a village near Iritti in Kerala. He lost balance and fell into a swamp on Tuesday and was buried while engaged in unloading operation near Perambadi Gate on the Makutta Road.

The district administration was working feverishly to clear the road blockade created by falling trees along the highway connecting Virajpet and Kannur. A senior official in the district administration said Bhagamandala and Talacauvery too received its share of heavy rains and though the approach roads are clear, there are not too many visitors frequenting the pilgrimage spots. There were more than 15 landslips on the road from Makutta to Virajpet bringing the traffic to a grinding halt since late Tuesday. Similarly, traffic movement between T. Shettigeri and Birunani was affected owing to heavy rains, which caused soil erosion and affected the roads.

The authorities have sought additional funds from the government to take up rain relief works in the district. Birunani in Virajpet received 256.5 mm of rainfall and Bettoli 126 mm, and given the incessant rains, there have been frequent disruption in power supply in the interior areas.

An average of 250 mm of rainfall was recorded in some of the villages along the Lakshmantirtha, while inflatable boats were deployed in Bhagamandala to facilitate people’s movement. Minor streams in the district were overflowing and paddy fields have been flooded affecting agriculture.

Meanwhile, according to the Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre (KSNDMC), Kodagu district received 511 mm of rainfall between June 1 to 13 which is 150% above normal. Taluk-wise, Madikeri received 25 mm of rainfall, Somwarpet 348 mm, and Virajpet 508 mm during the same period and was in excess of normal rains, according to KSNDMC.

Lightning alert app fails to a strike chord in Karnataka

Lightning alert app fails to a strike chord in Karnataka

Of the 104 deaths between March and May, 94 were due to lightning strikes. Last year, during the same period, it was 64.

13th June 2018 05:42 AM

BENGALURU: A mobile app developed by the Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre (KSNDMC) to alert farmers and rural folks about an oncoming thunderstorm at least 30 minutes before it strikes has failed to meet its objective. The result is that in the pre-monsoons in Karnataka this year, at least 104 (till June 1) have died mostly owing to lightning strikes.

Of the 104 deaths between March and May, 94 were due to lightning strikes. Last year, during the same period, it was 64. To forewarn people,  KSNDMC came up with a mobile application, called Sidilu (lightning), which is GPS-enabled app which alerts smartphone users about lightning at least half-an-hour before it strikes, that too with an almost-precise location where it would strike.  But in reality, although there are many smartphone users in the rural Karnataka, not many remain online. So, even when Sidilu alerts are sent, they miss them as through the day they are busy with farming activities.KSNDMC Director Srinivas Reddy told TNIE that most of the deaths due to lightning strikes were either farmers or shepherds who were in open spaces when  lightning oc curred.

HOW DOES IT WORK

KSNDMC, with the help of a US-based company fitted sensors at 12 spots in Karnataka. These sensors can know where lightning will strike at least 30 minutes before they occur. KSNDMC has developed a mobile app which reads the data from sensors and alerts the user.  Users are informed about their proximity to lightning strikes — whether they are within 1-km radius, 5-km radius or 25-km radius.

Lightning strikes kill 94 people in pre-monsoon showers across Karnataka

Lightning strikes kill 94 people in pre-monsoon showers across Karnataka

Jun 11, 2018, 23:22 IST

BENGALURU: As each year rain lashes the state, it also pours misery and death. The last two months of pre-monsoon showers and the first week of monsoon this year has been no different with 104 deaths recorded from April 1 to June 10.
But what is more curious to note is that the government has recorded as many as 94 deaths in the last two months due to lightning strikes.

It is a known fact that lightning strikes claim the lives of over 2,000 people in India each year.
And Karnataka is no different from the rest of the country.

“The lightning strikes are primarily recorded during the pre-monsoon showers in the state, due to the high presence of thunderstorm activity,” said director for Karnataka state natual disaster management cell, GS Srinivas Reddy.

According to the director, despite 94 deaths due to lightning, Karnataka is way behind when compared to other states in the country.

“State like Uttar Pradesh and Bihar have recorded as many as 300 to 350 deaths due to lightning in the same time frame, which suggests that the state numbers are not very alarming,” said Reddy.
The 94 deaths have been verified and certified by the local village accountants and the deputy commissioners of the various districts.

On Monday, newly appointed revenue minister R V Deshpande said the state government has already disbursed the compensation of Rs 5 lakh per deceased person, with Rs 4 lakh as per the natural disaster management regulations and another Rs one lakh from the chief minister’s relief fund, on directions from CM H D Kumaraswamy.

Apart from the 94 deaths due to lightning, the other 10 deaths have been recorded due to wall collapse or tree falls.

Meanwhile, the government has also recorded the death of 332 cattle in the state and has allocated Rs 25,000 per cattle.

On properties, the government has paid Rs 5,200 each for partially damaged homes and Rs 95,100 for fully damaged houses in the state.

As many as 2101 houses have been damaged partially and another 189 fully damaged.

“I have also directed the officials to pay a bigger amount for the partially damaged homes and relax the norms as the poor cannot be subjected to close scrutiny when his house has been damaged,” he said.

Coming soon: App which will send flood alerts during rain

Coming soon: App which will send flood alerts during rain

Updated: Jun 8, 2018, 06:24 IST

BENGALURU: Stuck in office while it’s pouring outside and want to know if the roads to your home are flooded or not? Or if your residential area is facing a waterlogging threat? Soon, you can find out on your smartphone. Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre (KSNDMC) and IISc scientists are developing an app to equip users with crucial information, particularly during monsoon.

KSNDMC director GM Srinivasa Reddy said he has scheduled a meeting with senior BBMP officials to discuss the app’s features. “We have telemetric rain gauges installed in different parts of the city which assess rainfall and send automated alerts to our server about the quantity and possibility of flooding in the particular area. At present, such alerts are being sent to district administration officials and other registered members as text messages. Once the app is launched, the information will be on citizens’ fingertips,” he added.

Reddy said one feature of the app will allow the user to check whether the road he/she plans to take is inundated. “Residents in a particular locality can also get alerts on whether the area faces the risk of flooding. We are installing sensors to keep tabs on the water levels of stormwater drains during the rainy season. Once they cross the danger mark, alerts on flood threat will be sent to app users. Even the sensors in rain gauges will assess the flood risk for a specific area depending on the quantity of rainfall received and send alerts,” he elaborated.

A senior official with KSNDMC said the Centre has entrusted them with the task of developing the app and other mechanism to strengthen rain preparedness. “Depending on its success rate, the project will be replicated in 10 major cities across the country with suitable modifications,” he added.

Timely alerts will go a long way in saving lives. Last year, around 16 people were killed due to tree falls, overflowing drains or wall collapse incidents during heavy rain in September and October.

Copious pre-monsoon rain fails to up water levels in dams

Copious pre-monsoon rain fails to up water levels in dams

Updated: Jun 8, 2018, 06:29 IST

BENGALURU: Heavy pre-monsoon showers may have brought respite from the heat but they haven’t had much impact on water levels in reservoirs.

Of the 13 major reservoirs in the state, only two — Supa in Uttara Kannada and Narayanapura in Vijayapura — have live storage (water which can be used) of 33% and 39% of the total capacity. In all other dams, the figure stands below 20%. This applies to KRS, Kabini and Harangi reservoirs in the Cauvery basin, on which Bengaluru and Mysuru districts are dependent for drinking water.
However, the situation is better than last year. Data show that the water quantity is slightly higher than the live storage recorded during the corresponding period of 2017.

GM Srinivasa Reddy, director, Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre (KSNDMC), said Karnataka is in desperate need of a good monsoon so that its dams are full and drinking water needs are met. “As is usually the case, pre-monsoon showers don’t cause a major increase in water levels. This year, despite the state having received 40% of annual rainfall in the form of pre-monsoon showers, water levels are up in only a few dams. The rise is normally witnessed in July, August and September, and we are hoping for a good monsoon,” he said.

A senior scientist at KSNDMC said a bad monsoon can trigger a water crisis later in the year. “The meteorological department has predicted a normal monsoon. It is expected to get stronger in the next few days, with thundershowers likely in most places in coastal Karnataka and interior Karnataka. Let’s hope the same trend continuous so that reservoirs are filled,” he added.
