Pre-monsoon rain cools city

The city recorded 20.3 mm of widespread rain till 8.30 pm, and traffic jams and flooding were also reported from some parts of the central business district, mainly the Majestic area.
It was a pleasant evening in Bengaluru as the maximum temperature dipped to 37.1 degrees Celsius, while the minimum temperature was 24.8 degrees Celsius.
IMD Bengaluru director in-charge Geeta Agnihotri told DH that it was the first pre-monsoon shower of the season. Pre-monsoon showers are usually scanty and occur periodically till June, till the onset of monsoon.
From March 1 till April 25, the city received 25mm rainfall, which is 22 mm below normal.
Geeta said that Sunday’s record temperature was the highest in the last 148 years. The IMD had on Sunday said that 39.2 degrees Celsius was the highest in the last 85 years.
"There was good moisture at the lower level on Monday and there was instability in the atmosphere. These factors will not continue for next 48 hours, so rainfall is not forecast for next 48 hours. But this will help temperatures dip. These rains are not because of any system formation over the Arabian Sea or the Indian ocean,” said Geeta.
Former IMD director B Puttanna said in 1931, when the temperature had shot up to 38.3 degrees Celsius, it had rained later. This rise in temperature depends upon the location, cloud coverage and wind factors.
If the winds are blowing from land surface then they are hotter, which leads to rise in temperatures and precipitation. These factors helped lead to high temperatures in Bengaluru and other parts of south-interior Karnataka, this year and in the past also, Puttanna added.
Prof Govindswamy Bala, of Divecha Centre for Climate Change, said that due to the El Nino effect, there is rise in temperatures since February. It is also because of weather variability which has happened in the past leading to record temperatures, he added.
Meanwhile, the BBMP control room received complaints of tree uprooting from Kammanahalli Main Road, Azad Nagar, Valmiki Nagar, Okalipuram, Freedom Park, SR Nagar, Ramchandrapura, BMK Layout and Valmikinagar. Also, two trees were uprooted near Ayesha School at Gandhinagar.
Power disruption
Due to the rain 2 power feeder lines tripped, causing power disruptions in Kumara Park West, K P Agrahara, Whitefield, Venkateshpura, Lingarajapura, Nagavara and Govindapura.

Rain Brings Some Respite, But not Enough to Keep Bengaluru Cool

BENGALURU: While Bengalureans received a little respite from the scorching heat due to showers on Monday evening, the relief is likely to be temporary. For, the Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Cell (KSNDMC) warns that the humid conditions owing to the mild rain might even worsen the effects of soaring temperatures in the city.
Several parts of Bengaluru and few villages in Kolar, Chamarajanagar and Ramanagaram districts received showers during the day.
Due to the rain, movement of traffic and power supply was disrupted in a few parts of the city, where heavy winds accompanied the showers. At Banaswadi, tree branches fell on the road due to the wind, while a few electric poles also collapsed.
Following the showers, the Bengaluru Traffic Police issued alerts on slow-moving traffic in several parts of the city such as KG Road, Coles Park, Victoria Road, MG Road, Platform Road and Mysore Bank Circle.
Showers were also reported in several other parts of the city, which brought down temperatures from the high thirties.
In other parts of the State, the highest rainfall was reported at Hoskote in Bengaluru Rural district, which received 46 mm rainfall. In parts of Chamarajanagar taluk, 18 mm rainfall was reported and 19 mm in Kolar. Light isolated drizzles were also reported in other parts of South Interior Karnataka region.
KSNDMC says that apart from the showers reported on Monday, no rainfall is expected until the first week of May. SSM Gavaskar, scientist at KSNDMC, said that the relief due to such showers was only during rainfall.
“Rains are likely in the first week of May. There are also possibilities of showers in isolated pockets of the region during the week. The showers reported were not widespread too,” he said.

Showers Bring Brief Respite From Heat in Bengaluru

BENGALURU: Northern parts of Bengaluru, which have been recording very high temperatures over the past month, received light showers on Friday evening.

The rainfall was restricted only to those areas, while other parts of the city remained dry, despite being overcast all evening.

Some localities experienced wind, which brought relief to people suffering in the hot weather for months.

A maximum of 22 mm was recorded at Doddabommasandra. Other parts of the region that received showers on Friday evening are Radhakrishna Temple premises (15.5 mm), Yeshwantpur (9 mm), Shettyhalli (19 mm) and Dasarahalli (10.5 mm).

Parts of Bengaluru Rural such as Devanahalli (13 mm) received isolated showers during the day.

According to Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Cell (KSNDMC), overcast skies are expected to prevail in the city.

However, showers are less likely. They also forecast showers in parts of the city and southern interior Karnataka.

Along with the soaring temperatures, lack of pre-monsoon showers has been a concern.

The temperature is expected to fall by a degree or two in the coming days.

According to KSNDMC data, pre-monsoon showers too have been below normal. Bengaluru Urban received an average rainfall of 24.5 mm between April 1 and 22 last year. This year, it has received only 6 mm.

Kalaburagi, Ballari, Vijayapura sweat under 45 degree Celsius mark

There seems to be no respite from the scorching heat for Karnataka after Kalaburagi, Ballari and Vijayapura districts on Thursday recorded 45 degreess Celsius. 

Of the 30 districts in the state, as many as 25 districts have recorded 40 degrees Celsius and above, according to Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre (KSNDMC). 

The data available at the Centre shows that Shahabad hobli in Chittapur taluk, Kalaburagi; Kasaba hobli in Siriguppa taluk, Ballari district and Babaleshwara hobli in Vijayapura district sizzled at 45 degrees Celsius. In these three districts, the average temperature was between 41 and 43 degrees Celsius. The KSNDMC report says that mercury touched 40 degrees Celsius in Kengeri near Bengaluru. On April 12, too, Kengeri touched 40 degrees Celsius. So far this summer season, no district has crossed the 45 degrees Celsius mark.

People of Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, Uttara Kannada, Chikkamagaluru and Kodagu districts are better placed as temperature has not crossed 40 degrees Celsius. Only three districts–Bengaluru Urban, Dakshina Kannada and Udupi–have not been declared drought-affected this time. Pre-monsoon showers brought some respite for a few hours in parts of Kollegal and Chikkamagaluru. No widespread rain is expected in any part of the state at least till the second week of May, said KSNDMC Director Srinivas Reddy. The prevailing drought condition is making the government to consider cloud seeding. 

In case the chief minister agrees for it, then cloud seeding (chemical inducement) could be taken up in July and August provided there are rain bearing clouds in 12 drought-affected districts of north interior Karnataka, said Reddy. The KSNDMC director said that there is severe water shortage in Kalaburagi and Vijayapura as river Bhima has gone dry. The government has sought 4 tmcft of water from Maharashtra, he added.

Parts of Karnataka Reeling Under Intense Heat..,

BENGALURU:  Many districts in the north Karnataka region in the State are reeling under heat wave conditions. Water shortage and power cuts has worsened conditions, especially in drought-hit regions. At least six districts recorded maximum temperature of 42 degrees Celsius.
Highest was in Raichur that recorded 43 degrees on Tuesday. Even Bengaluru is sizzling at 40 degree Celsius.
According to experts in the Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre (KSNDMC), the north Karnataka region is heading for the worst summer in the last decade. “Higher temperatures are being recorded in all parts of north interior Karnataka for the last few days. If the same condition continues for a few more days, these districts may face heat wave condition. In such conditions, the temperature is at least 5 degrees higher than the average temperature,” said G S Srinivasa Reddy, Director of the KSNDMC.
To beat the heat, the government offices in Raichur, Kalaburagi and Vijayapura work from 8 am and 1 pm. However, people working in the fields are more vulnerable to heat strokes during the summer.
 The temperature rise has been attributed to global warming induced by climate change. Places such as Bengaluru have been witnessing the heat-island effect.
Due to an increased built-up area, increased numbers of vehicles, and dust particles flying from construction activities are creating a ‘heat-island’ effect in thickly populated urban areas.

In a First, Bengaluru Sizzles Past 40o C

BENGALURU: For the first time, Bengaluru saw maximum temperature exceed 40 degrees Celsius on Tuesday. The temperature recorded at a Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre (KSNDMC) station in Chowdeshwari ward, Yelahanka zone, was 40.6 degrees Celsius.

It is the highest temperature ever recorded in the city, surpassing the 38.9 degrees Celsius registered on May 22, 1931. Maximum temperature for the month of April was also recorded in the same year on April 30, at 38.3 degrees.

Speaking to Express, G S Sreenivas Reddy, director, KSNDMC, said that out of the 14 stations in Bengaluru urban limits, six stations registered maximum temperatures above 39 degrees Celsius.

“The average temperatures in the city has been above 38 degrees Celsius,” he said.

The forecast for the next week is also grim. “The probability of showers is less for the region. It is likely that the city will record temperatures around 41 degrees during the week,” Reddy said.

The situation was worse in parts of North Karnataka, where maximum temperature reached 44 degrees Celsius in parts of Raichur district.

According to KSNDMC data, two-third (20) of the districts in the state recorded maximum temperatures exceeding 40 degrees. Six of them were above 41 degrees and three above 43 degrees (Raichur, Kalaburagi and Ballari).
