City gets rain, mercury level dips

City gets rain, mercury level dips

After bearing the sweltering summer for weeks, Bengalureans heaved a sigh of relief when it rained for about 30-40 minutes on Thursday afternoon.

The rainfall, thought not that heavy, brought down the mercury level by a few notches. The rainfall was coupled with thunder and strong winds.

Some places like Mahadevapura and J C Nagar experienced hail stones, but Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) officials said that they had not recorded any such incidence. According to IMD records, city received 15 mm of rains upto 8.30 pm.

The maximum temperature in Bengaluru was 35.5 and minimum was 24.9 degree Celsius. The maximum and minimum temperatures at HAL airport were 34.7 and 24.4 degree Celsius respectively. Kempegowda International Airport recorded a maximum and minimum of 35 and 24 degree Celsius respectively.

The maximum temperatures in the city were just one degree above the normal which is 34 degree Celsius. Minimum temperatures were two degree above the normal of 22 degree Celsius.

A tree was uprooted at Gayathri Nagar after it rained. A branch of at tree crashed at Sanky tank. However, no one was injured in these incidents, said BBMP officials.

According to IMD officials, there is a trough from Vidarbha to extreme peninsular India across Telangana, interior Karnataka and interior Tamil Nadu extending upto 1.5 kms above mean sea level. It was because of this most parts of south interior Karnataka are experiencing cloudy sky and rainfall.

This will continue for the next 48 hours and are a part of the pre- monsoon showers.

Welcome showers on a hot summer day

05 May, 20:32

Showers lashed several parts of the state on Thursday, bringing some relief for people from the high temperatures.

Mandya

It rained for more than half an hour at KMDoddi and other places in Maddur taluk of Mandya district. However, there was only a drizzle after thunder and lightning in Mandya. Malavalli had a cloudy weather since morning, but there was no rain.

While it rained continuously in Nagamangala, it drizzled in Srirangapatna. There was moderate rainfall in Koppa and other nearby villages of Maddur taluk.

Chamarajanagar

Heavy rains accompanied by gusty winds lashed Gundlupet town and surrounding villages in Chamarajanagar district for more than 45 minutes on Thursday afternoon.

The hailstorm for more than half an hour in Yelandur town of the district brought the temperature down.

Chikkamagaluru

Thunder and lightning accompanied the hailstorm that lashed Chikkamagaluru city and surrounding areas. It rained from 1.45 pm to 3.15 pm in the city. Open spaces turned into pools in the villages of the district.

Rain brings respite to south interior K'taka; north simmers

05 May, 20:29

At least nine districts of south interior Karnataka received moderate to heavy pre-monsoon showers on Thursday, and the rains may continue for two more days.

Apart from being a welcome respite from the scorching heat, the rains kindled hopes that the south-west monsoon may not miss its date with Karnataka in June first week.

S S MGavaskar, scientist at Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre, said that in the last two days many districts of south interior Karnataka were receiving isolated moderate to heavy rains. Notably, north interior Karnataka did not receive rains.

The southern districts to get rains were - Hassan, Chamarajnagar, Kodagu, Chikmagaluru, Mandya, Ramanagaram, Bengaluru Rural, Bengaluru Urban and Tumakuru. Till May 8, scattered rains between 3 pm and 8 pm are expected in these districts, said Gavaskar.

Mysuru district recorded heavy downpour. A weather gauging centre of the KSNDMC at Lakshmipura, Krishnaraja taluk in Mysuru recorded 68 mm rains at 5.30 pm, which is considered heavy.

In Hassan district, Melagodu in Hassan taluk received 52 mm rain, while Somanahalli in Gundlupet taluk of Chamarajanagar district recorded 49 mm. Even Mandya was blessed with heavy rains with Kadalur in Maddur taluk recording 38.9 mm rain. In Bengaluru rural, Srinivasapura village in Nelamangala taluk received 56.6 mm rains.

Gavaskar said Kodagu and Mysuru districts are expected to get good rains. More than these two districts, adjacent Wayanad in Kerala has been receiving heavy rains. "This would naturally increase water level in the Cauvery basin," he added.
Asked whether moderate to heavy rain received now is a precursor to normal monsoon, the officer said it is too early to make any forecast.

He said normally April was cooler than May. But this time, May would be cooler in the state because of active pre-monsoon. Even North Karnataka is expected to get rain for a week in May, he added.

May will be rainier, cooler in city: IMD

The city is likely to get some respite from the sweltering heat in May, according to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD).

Heatwave conditions in north and south interior Karnataka have abated and it's likely to rain in Bengaluru for the next two days, said IMD Bengaluru director in-charge Geeta Agnihotri.

Since March 1, the city has received just 45 mm rainfall, a deficit of 21 mm. In April, the city received only 25.3 mm of pre-monsoon showers against the normal forecast of 44 mm. In March, the city received 19.9 mm rainfall against the forecast of 9.4 mm.

In short, there were fewer rainy days while the temperature was high. This summer, Bengaluru has seen only short spells of rain. The only exception being that HAL airport received 77 mm rainfall on March 15.

Agnihotri hoped there would be more rain in May. Parts of interior Karnataka are already receiving rainfall while clouds are hovering over Bengaluru. Though it hasn't rained much, temperatures have come down.

Last year, the city had received 37.7 mm rainfall in May and 226.5 mm in April. In 2014, the city received 4.7 mm rainfall in May and 15 mm in April.

Ravi S Nanjundiah, chairman, Centre for Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences, IISc, also forecast more rainy days for Bengaluru later this month.

Mercury dips across Karnataka after pre-monsoon rains.,

Bengaluru, May 03, 2016,

Thanks to pre-monsoon showers, temperature finally dipped across Karnataka, including Bengaluru, by 2 to 3 degrees Celsius in the last two days.

According to scientists at Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre (KSNDMC), the mercury level has come down in both the north interior and south interior Karnataka on Sunday and Monday.

Except Dharwad, no other district in the North received rains. However, in the South, Bengaluru urban, Bengaluru rural, Tumakuru and Chikkaballapur received rains which brought down the temperature in many places.

Bengaluru on Monday experienced light rainfall and a dip in temperature which brought some relief for City folks from scorching heat. According to Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), Bengaluru recorded maximum temperature of 36.6 degrees Celsius and a minimum of 24.7 degrees Celsius. Though the maximum and minimum temperature were three degree above normal, it was 1-2 degrees Celsius less and cooler compared to previous days because of the wind and cloud cover.

City and Hal airport recorded trace rainfall (less than 0.1mm). The IMD has forecast cloudy sky with possibility of development of thunder and lightening in next 24 hours and rain in the next 48 hours.

As per the KSNDMC, Kolar, Chikkaballapur, Mandya, Mysuru, Tumakuru, Kodagu, Hassan, Ramanagara, Bengaluru urban and Bengaluru rural are expected to receive isolated to moderate rains for the next two days.
