Temperature difference a big concern: KSNDMC

BENGALURU: Winter has arrived this December, but it seems to be felt only during the night as daytime temperatures remain to be high. In fact, there was huge difference between the maximum and minimum temperatures on Friday. 

The maximum temperature is hovering around 30 degrees C while the minimum remains around 14 degrees C.
Experts say this is a man-made situation arising out of overuse of vehicles, high-rise building, deforestation, etc.

Srinivas Reddy, Director, Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre (KSNDMC) the maximum temperature recorded on Wednesday was 32 degrees C  in Bengaluru. However, the maximum temperature came down to 26 degrees C on Thursday, while it crept back to 30 degrees C on Friday. The temperatures across the state are quite similar, he added.

“This December, the maximum temperature will go up to 30 degrees and minimum will be 14 degrees, which are both extremes when compared to normal temperatures during December,” said Reddy.

Sundar M Metri, Director, India Meteorological Department (IMD), Bengaluru said, normally, it does not rain during winter. “This is because there will be no warmer air that will hold moisture content. But this time, as the cyclone in southwest Bay of Bengal has weakened into a deep depression, there will be some rain in south interior Karnataka, including Bengaluru. This is the reason for a decrease in temperature during day time.”

Health and environment experts say this difference in maximum and minimum temperature will affect ecological balance and also have an impact on human health. 
Dr Rajani M, Deputy Director, Health Department, said normally during winter, there will be no outbreaks of ilnesses. However, any change in weather, rain, humidity or temperature will lead to a spurt in cases of viral fever.

Environmentalist A N Yellappa 
Reddy attributed this extreme temperature difference to man-made destruction. “High emissions from vehicles, plastic burning and other reasons have resulted in the formation of heat islands in the 
atmosphere. Whenever sun rays penetrate such areas, more heat is generated which eventually causes extreme heat,” he said.

“This year, there has hardly been any fog or mist in the mornings. This change in temperature will cause adverse effect on bio-diversity,’’ he added.

BENGALURU CHILLS UNDER NADA’S WINTER SHOWERS

When you woke up on Friday morning to an overcast sky and an unexpected nip in the air, you didn’t need the weatherman (or Ned Stark) to tell you that winter had come. It came piggybacking on Cyclone Nada, which hit the eastern coast of India.
On Friday morning, private weather stations claimed the minimum temperature in the city had dropped to 9 degree Celsius. Later, however, the Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre (KSNDMC) clarified that it was 16 degree Celsius, not 9.
Friday stayed mostly overcast, with light rainfall in the evening that brought down the temperature considerably. “The intensity of the cyclone has gone down several levels so there is nothing to worry about,” said GS Srinivas Reddy, Director, KSNDMC.
Reddy said the rain was likely to stay. “States near the Bay of Bengal may be affected by the cyclone, but considering Karnataka’s distance, only light rain was expected here. Having said that, there is a chance Bengaluru may receive more than 50 mm rainfall,” he said. The temperature may stay on the lower side for a few more days.
Southern parts of Bengaluru, Kanakpura, Kolar and Ramanagara districts, may receive light rainfall on Saturday. State may see rain in isolated patches on Sunday, especially in Kodagu, Dakshina Kannada and Mysuru.
NOTHING TO WORRY
Reddy said the centre had already alerted the government about the cyclone. “As of now, we do not see a threat that might require a discussion on short-term disaster mitigation plan,” said Reddy.
In case the situation worsens, the KSNDMC has a plan that will be put into effect. “We can arrange for shelter for vulnerable populations, provide access to clean drinking water, and ensure that power supply stays running,” said Reddy.

Karnataka staring at a major drinking water crisis as reservoir levels plunge

The failure of the monsoons in the state for the second consecutive year has, besides driving farmers into despair, plunged the major urban centres - including the capital city Bengaluru - into a major drinking water crisis . The water level at all 13 major reservoirs in Karnataka has plummeted to a 10-year low, and with no rains being forecast for the next week, the state could be staring at a major drinking water crisis.
Data from the Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre (KSNDMC), accessed by TOI, reaffirmed the prospect of a severe drinking water problem in the summer months next year. Bengaluru could be looking at a parched summer, with the water level at the Krishna Raja Sagar (KRS) reservoir touching a 15-year low. "The capacity of KRS reservoir is 124.80ft. On Tuesday, the water level stood at 78.41ft, while it stood at 110.51ft for the corresponding period last year. The situation is no better at the Kabini and Tungabhadra reservoirs - the deficit is 20ft at Kabini, it is 43ft at Tungabhadra," said an official from KSNDMC.

A senior official from the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) said that water rationing was the only plausible option the body had to ensure sustained water supply to Bengaluru's citizens till June 2017. "We will have to supply water to the city with what little reserves there are in the KRS. So, we will have to reduce the amount of water supplied, to avert the possibility of taps running dry before the onset of the next monsoon," he added.

The failure of the north-east monsoon has only compounded the state's woes. A KSNDMC official pointed out that the average daily rainfall in Karnataka in the last week of November under normal conditions was 8mm. "However, the state received no rain in this period. Also, between October 1 and November 25, the state recorded just 37mm rain, against the normal 174mm - a 79% deficit," he added.
Furthermore, the KSNDMC data also indicates that a majority 3,600 minor irrigation tanks across the state too are facing a crippling shortage of water. While about 432 of the tanks had are filled to more than 50% capacity, more than 1,500 of them are just one-third full. The remaining 45% of the tanks are completely dry.

Power generation, agriculture hit
With water level dropping at the Linganamakki and Supa reservoirs, power generation at the hydroelectric stations too has taken a beating.
Scanty rainfall has also impacted agriculture. While the total area that can be utilised for Rabi crop cultivation in the state is 32.25 lakh hectares during this time of the year, only 19.67 lakh hectares have witnessed sowing activity, as on November 21. In 2015, Rabi crops were sown on 27.75 lakh hectares.
