Heavy rain lashes Vijayapura, Gadag MAY 28, 2015, VIJAYAPURA/GADAG,

Heavy rains coupled with gusty winds brought respite from sweltering heat in Almatti of Vijayapura taluk on Wednesday. The town was reeling under high temperature for the past four days.

The showers which began at 5 in the evening continued till night. Heavy winds wreaked havoc by blowing up tin-sheet roofs of several dhabas near Hosur Cross on National Highway 50. Mangoes and coconuts were strewn over the roads due to the winds. The farmers, who have tilled their lands, were awaiting rain for sowing seeds. Agricultural activity will gain momentum with the Wednesday's rain.

It also rained heavily in Benala, Vandala, Telagi, Angadageri, Nidagundi, Golasangi and other villages.

It rained heavily for about 30 minutes in Badami also.Nargund town in Gadag taluk also received heavy rains in the evening. The showers disrupted the weekly shandy and villagers in the vicinity who had come for the shandy ran helter skelter. The canvassing from gram panchayat elections was also affected due to the rain. The 30-minute showers brought respite from heat for the residents.

Rain coupled with hailstones lashed Mulgund and surrounding villages for more than an hour. Rain water gushed into low-lying areas.

A 17-year-old boy was killed by lightning in Ramenahalli village of Mundaragi taluk. Manjappa Ramappa Bagali was grazing cows when lightning struck him.

Rain forecast for 10 Karnataka districts BENGALURU, MAY 27, 2015 (IANS)

Rain is likely on Wednesday in 10 out of the 35 districts of Karnataka, the meteorological department has forecast.

The districts likely to receive some rain are Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, Belagavi, Haveri, Bengaluru, Chikkamagalur, Kodagu, Kolar, Shivamogga and Tumakuru.

Bengaluru is expected to have a partly cloudy sky with a possibility of rain or thunderstorm on Wednesday, said officials from the meteorological department.

The maximum temperature would be around 32 degrees Celsius while the minimum temperature is likely to be 22 degrees Celsius. The humidity is likely to be 50 percent.

On Tuesday, the maximum temperature was 32.2 degrees Celsius, one notch below the seasons average while the minimum temperature was recorded at 22.3 degrees Celsius, one notch above the average, the Met Office said.

On Tuesday, Gulbarga recorded the maximum temperature of 42.9 degrees Celsius.
Some other places which saw the mercury shooting above 40 degrees Celsius were Bijapur at 41.2 degrees and Raichur at 41.8 degrees Celsius.

Weatherman predicts more rain Bengaluru, May 19, 2015, DHNS:

The City received  18mm rainfall till 8.30 pm on Tuesday. HAL airport and Yelahanka recorded 0.2 mm and 4mm rainfall. Squall was reported in the City and the maximum wind speed was 42kmph. This was recorded at 5.40 pm and was in the northerly direction. 

The BBMP control rooms were flooded with calls. More than 20 trees were uprooted. Tree uprooting was reported on Ambedkar Road, HSR Layout Second Block, Jnana Bharathi Auditorium, Peenya Third Stage, Ramachandrapura, Shivajinagar, Prakash Nagar at Rajajinagar, Kalyan Nagar Depot, BEL Road, HRBR Layout Third Block, Nandini Layout, J C Road, near Kino Theatre, Shantala Junction near Good Shed Road, Pushpanjali theatre at R T Nagar, Nrupathunga Road, Kengeri Upanagara, Dhoopanahalli at Domlur and Atmananda Colony at R T Nagar. The Palike said that workers were sent to clear the trees, immediately. 

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast more rain for the next two days. It has also issued a warning of heavy rainfall and strong winds across south interior Karnataka and coastal Karnataka. 

According to IMD-Bengaluru Director Sunder Mahadev Metri, the City and other parts of south interior and coastal Karnataka will experience thunder showers coupled with squall for the next two days because of trough over Lakshwadeep and surrounding areas and a sheer zone over south Peninsular India.

Heavy rain likely today, tomorrow BENGALURU, MAY 17, 2015, DHNS:

The Indian Meteorological Department has issued a heavy rainfall warning for the City and other parts of south interior Karnataka for the next 48 hours. The City is likely to experience strong winds and heavy rainfall coupled with thundershowers.

The warning was issued on Sunday afternoon because of two prevailing systems, an upper air cyclonic circulation over Bay of Bengal and the other is east-west sheer (strong winds blowing, changing their direction and wind speed) across North Peninsular India.
Due to this most parts of south interior Karnataka will experience heavy rainfall, thunderstorm, hailstorm and squall.

The warning has been issued for the next 48 hours, said IMD- Bengaluru Director Sunder Mahadev Metri. He added that formation of systems and changes in patterns were a common phenomenon during pre- monsoon showers.

On Sunday till 8.30 pm, the City recorded 13.4 mm rainfall and HAL airport recorded 11.7 mm rainfall.

The City till 8.30 am on Sunday (May 17, 2015) recorded the highest rainfall for the month of May, this year of 66.4 mm.

Earlier this month, the highest recorded were on May 3- 12.1 mm, on May 1- 9.7 mm and on May 13- 2.6 mm. HAL airport on Sunday till 8.30 am had recorded 26.4 mm and BIAL had recorded 22.8 mm rainfall. From March 1, till May 17 (8.30 am), the City has received 356 mm rainfall, departure from normal being 246 mm (normal of 110 mm). While HAL airport has received 241 mm rainfall, departure from normal being 135 mm (normal of 106 mm).

Foaming increases
Following heavy rains on Saturday and Sunday, the foaming at the Varthur and Bellandur lakes has increased even as the Karnataka State Pollution Control Board (KSPCB) maintains that there is no solution for it.

KSPCB Chairman, Dr Vaman Acharya told Deccan Herald that when its rains, the churning increases leading to foaming.

"During rainfall, foaming increases. There is no solution for this as it is a natural phenomena. However, we have asked officials from Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board ( BWSSB) to set up sewage treatment plants at the earliest."

Bengalureans caught unaware as rain cripples city May 16, 2015

When the skies opened up suddenly on Saturday
afternoon, citizens seemed to be caught unawares.
The heavy rain that lasted for over three hours
crippled the city. Roads turned into rivulets, houses
were flooded and trees uprooted in a few low lying
areas.
The Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP)
control rooms were flooded with distress calls from
the citizens.
Banashankari and K.R. Road were the most affected
areas because of the tree falls. An autorickshaw was
badly damaged when a tree fell on it on K.R. Road.
The other areas where tree falls were reported
included ISRO Layout, Hanumanthanagar, Bapuji Nagar,
Vasanth Nagar, Bagalagunte and Dasarahalli. At
H.B.R. Layout, Soundarya Layout and K.P. Agrahara,
the rain waters inundated a few houses. Water logging
was also reported at M.S. Building and Kanteerava
Stadium.
Traffic jams
The vehicular movement across the city was badly
affected. Bumper to bumper traffic was witnessed on
all arterial and sub-arterial roads. Two-wheeler riders
were worst affected. Many sought shelter under the
awnings of road-side shops and under the flyovers. “It
took me nearly three hours to reach Shivajinagar from
Kanakapura Road. The rain water was seeing through
the roof of the BMTC bus,” said a citizen, who spoke
to The Hindu on condition of anonymity.
The underpasses in many areas were also flooded.
The BBMP officials, who were attending to the rain-
related complaints, claimed that they were prepared to
tackle any eventuality. They said that 10 control rooms
were equipped with men and material and would
function round-the-clock.
Traffic in the central business district was disrupted
due to heavy rains on Saturday.
Bus stranded at K.H. Road
A KSRTC volvo bus stranded in the middle of the busy
K.H. Road led to huge traffic snarls. Traffic police
rushed to the spot and towed the bus to the stand .
By then, traffic piled up on adjacent roads including
Hosur Road, Kasturba Road, M.G. Road, and Lalbagh
Road. Water logging on the roads cause slow
movement as two-wheeler riders parked their vehicles
on the roadside to take shelter at shops and
commercial establishments on the roads.
State of buses
As rain lashed the city, commuters in buses were mute
witness to water pouring inside the buses along with
strong winds pushing waters through window panes.
"Unfortunately I couldn't even close my side of the
window, it was totally stuck, and see how wet I am,"
complained Vinaya who was travelling from KSIT on
Kanakapura Main Road to Sajjan Rao Circle. As it
poured, even the driver of the crowded bus on
Kanakapura Road had to navigate with difficulty as the
wipers went motionless and the conductor was left
wiping the wind-shield. People getting off the bus
landed in pools of water at most bus stops.

Heavy rain lashed Bengaluru on Saturday, crippling normal life, causing huge traffic snarls across the city as roads were flooded and inundating low-laying areas.

Starting intermittently around 1.30 p.m., the rain picked up pace, turned into a downpour by 2 p.m. and lasted for over two hours in and around the city.

"The city is experiencing moderate to heavy rains due to east-west shear zone and upper air cyclonic circulation over the Kerala coast and Lakshadweep islands," a weather official told IANS.

About 60 mm of rain was recorded till 5.30 p.m. in the city, 19mm on outskirts and 17.4mm in the airport area.

"These (rains) are pre-monsoon showers, occurring over the last two-three weeks across the state, reducing day and night temperatures during mid-summer and bringing relief to the people from scorching heat," the official said.

Though the met department had forecast generally cloudy sky, with the possibility of rain or thunderstorm for Saturday, the 10 million residents of the city were caught unawares by the heavy rain, which disrupted weekend trips and affected water and power supply.

"Weather outlook for the city on Sunday is cloudy sky and rain or thunderstorm to occur from late afternoon or evening. Though rain subsided on Saturday evening, the sky remained overcast and drizzling continued till late into night," the official added.

The downpour also forced Delhi Daredevils to cancel its practice session at the nets in the Chinnaswamy stadium here ahead of the last league tie of the IPL-8 with the hosts Royal Challengers Bangalore on Sunday evening.

Maximum temperature dipped to 30 degrees Celsius, which is three degrees departure from normal (33 degrees Celsius) and minimum to 22.5 degrees Celsius, two degree departure from normal.

The superceded civic body, Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike, was also caught unawares by the downpour, as evident from hundreds of distress calls to its control rooms from across the city, complaining of uprooted trees and electric poles falling and telephone lines snapping.

RAINS PLAY HAVOC IN MYSURU CITY..16May2015

Mysuru, May 16- Many areas in Mysuru city
had to bear the brunt of rain which flooded
the houses and streets yesterday.
Heavy showers accompanied by thunder and
lightning which began at around 1.30 pm
continued till about 4.30 pm resulting in rain
water flooding the houses in
Chikkaharadanahalli, Kuvempunagar,
Ramakrishnanagar, Saraswathipuram and
other areas.
More than 25 houses were flooded with rain
water at Chikkaharadanahalli, while it was
around 50 houses at Surya Layout in
Srirampura that witnessed water logging.
Many household goods were seen floating in
the water and people were seen running
helter-skelter to save their cars and two-
wheelers.
Fearing flood situation, people rushed to their
respective terraces to take shelter. With the
heavy rains lashing city yesterday, fallen trees
were a common scene at Kuvempunagar,
Ramkrishnanagar, Sriramapura and other
areas. People found it difficult to commute on
the road as the rain water had logged for
around 3ft. In Kuvempunagar, a newly-laid
road caved in owing to heavy downpour.
Staff at the ISCKON Temple were seen
struggling to push away the rainwater from
temple premises. This apart, the supporting
wall of the storm water drain was damaged
resulting in traffic commotion.
Meanwhile, as a result of rainwater entering
the cellar of the CESC office at Kuvempunagar,
few of the documents are said to have been
damaged. Also, the vehicles parked in the
cellar were submerged due to water logging
for around 9ft.
Many houses located in low laying areas also
witnessed the rainwater entering their
houses. Trees were also uprooted in
Jayanagar, Kalidasa Road, Saraswathipuram
and other areas.
MCC officials and fire-fighters rushed to the
spot and cleared the uprooted trees to make
way for traffic movement.
