Rain causes widespread damages in Maddur MADDUR (MANDYA DIST),

Rains, accompanied by heavy winds, continued to take its toll in the taluk, as damages worth Rs 5 lakh were reported on Saturday.

The rain, which pounded Somanahalli Grama Panchayat limits for more than an hour caused extensive crop damages. Water entered a brick making unit in the taluk, while roof of a sericulture unit and several houses flew off, causing damages due to the heavy wind.

Several electric poles at Vaidyanathapura village were damaged during the downpour. While some electric poles collapsed, others were found tilting precariously after the rainfall.

Former GP member of Vaidyanathapura V T Shivaraju alleged that poor quality works during installation of the poles was the cause for damage. "Moreover, the poles are also of inferior quality and poorly maintained," he alleged.

One injured
Chidanada Murthy, a resident of K Honnalagere village in the taluk was injured. The incident occurred when he was returning from Maddur to his village, when an electric pole tilted towards the ground, injuring him.

Chidananda suffered severe head injuries and a broken leg. He is being treated at the District Hospital in Mandya.

At Chinnasandra village, a plantain plantation, belonging to one Gowramma was damaged. The heavy winds levelled about 300 plants, resulting in damages worth Rs 2 lakh.

At Hunasemaradadoddi village, a sericulture unit suffered damages, as its roof flew off. More than 100 kg silkworms and silkworm eggs, worth Rs 40,000 was damaged. A house belonging to Kividappa and Chikkatayamma, collapsed during the rainfall.

At Nidagatta village, a house belonging to one Srinivas was damaged, as its roof collapsed. At Madanayakanahalli, water entered a brick making unit, resulting in damages.
