BENGALURU: Several taluks of the state are growing increasingly vulnerable to drought conditions every year. Between 2004 and 2016, all the taluks in the state have enjoyed normal rainfall for only two years. Of the 176 taluks in the state, 109 have faced drought for at least four years between 2011 and 2015.
While a drought assessment study is being taken up by the Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Cell (KSNDMC), experts fear that the situation might get worse in the next few years.
According to the data of drought-hit taluks over the past 12 years, only coastal districts which generally record heavy rainfall are exempt from drought. However, these areas too are increasingly becoming vulnerable.
KSNDMC has also calculated the drought probability for various taluks. The taluks with the highest probability for drought (86 per cent) include Chikkaballapur in the same district, Aland and Jewargi taluks in Kalaburagi district and Shirahatti taluk in Gadag district.

Shockingly, 135 of the 176 taluks have a drought probability of over 50 per cent. A large number of them have suffered droughts for at least eight years of the past 12 years.
The worst hit regions are parts of North Interior Karnataka. Some districts in South Interior Karnataka, such as Chikkaballapur, Kolar and parts of Mysuru and Chamarajanagar too have been recording drought years at an alarming frequency
