Cyclone Vardah-triggered rain in the city laid bare the lack of preparedness by civic agencies, with the overnight rain causing traffic jams, water stagnation at various junctions and uprooting of trees at 15 locations.


The meteorological department registered heavy rains of 69 mm around the HAL area, while areas like Indiranagar, Koramangala, Ejipura and Viveknagar witnessed overall rain of 60.8mm.


Despite the BMP’s claim that it had made adequate arrangements to deal with any rain-related mishap, water stagnated at various junctions, creating traffic jams.


Officials said that Mysore road witnessed heavy traffic jams as there was waterlogging at Nayandahalli flyover.


“Waterlogging was not only on the flyover but it was beneath the flyover too. As people were not aware of the road condition, they were forced to slow down their vehicles. It became difficult to move as vehicles were moving bumper to bumper,” said S Shivanna, one of the commuters.


Water also stagnated inside the vehicular underpass near Le Meridien.


Mayor G Padmavati inspected Vijayanagar, Attiguppe and Nayandahalli and instructed BWSSB and BBMP officials to clear the waterlogging.

Meanwhile, trees were uprooted at Sanjaynagar, Benson Town, JC Nagar, CMH Road, Indiranagar, Yelahanka town, Dasarahalli-Abbigere, south Vijayanagar service
road, RPC Layout, Attiguppe, Padmanabahnagar, Banashankari, VV Puram, Koramangala and Jayanagar 9th block.


According to officials, the uprooted trees were removed quickly thanks to the seven teams of forest officials, fully equipped for tree cutting, and eight Prahari teams that have been kept on alert.


The mayor and BBMP commissioner N Manjunatha Prasad have asked zonal joint commissioners and engineers to take up precautionary measures to tackle the situation and ensure that waterlogging does not take place.

Karnataka will feel impact of cyclone on Tuesday

As thick clouds envelop the sky and winds pick up speed in the city, civic authorities in Bengaluru have been asked to stay alert as Cyclone Vardah is expected to bring in strong spells of rain on Tuesday.

While the city is expected to get moderate to heavy rainfall (between an innocuous 7.5mm to potentially threatening 34.5mm of rain), the outskirts will receive far more rain, says the Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre (KSNDMC).

“An advisory for flood alert and high winds had been sent to the BBMP,” said G.V. Srinivasa Reddy, Director, KSNDMC. “The wind speed is expected to be between 40 to 50 kilometres per hour which, in a city like Bengaluru, could lead to tree fall. While rains are not going to be heavy, we have seen even minor rain resulting in floods... We have sent out a word of precaution to the BBMP while our team is watching out for flood-like situations.”

The KSNDMC is preparing ward-wise forecast of rains expected. This data is being conveyed to local engineers and officers. Wards on the eastern side - Mahadevapura, Koramangala, Indiranagar - are expected to receive more rain.

Taking to social networking sites to exercise caution, Mayor G. Padmavathi posted: “We have already informed all our Control Rooms to be active and keep the rescue team/debris clearing team on high alert.”

Kolar, Chikkaballapur on alert

In Karnataka, Kolar, Chikkaballapur and parts of Tumakuru district bordering Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh are expected to bear the brunt of the cyclone. KSNMDC said there are chances of rainfall exceeding 120mm in 24 hours in these areas.

Rain forecast

The city’s defences against rain might face a crucial test on Tuesday and Wednesday. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) expects widespread rain in south interior Karnataka — which spans Kolar to Mysuru. Some areas could receive ‘heavy’ rains. Malnad and the plains are expected to receive rain on Wednesday.

By December 17, only the clouds will remain. But, a few areas may receive light rain.

Temperature difference a big concern: KSNDMC

BENGALURU: Winter has arrived this December, but it seems to be felt only during the night as daytime temperatures remain to be high. In fact, there was huge difference between the maximum and minimum temperatures on Friday. 

The maximum temperature is hovering around 30 degrees C while the minimum remains around 14 degrees C.
Experts say this is a man-made situation arising out of overuse of vehicles, high-rise building, deforestation, etc.

Srinivas Reddy, Director, Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre (KSNDMC) the maximum temperature recorded on Wednesday was 32 degrees C  in Bengaluru. However, the maximum temperature came down to 26 degrees C on Thursday, while it crept back to 30 degrees C on Friday. The temperatures across the state are quite similar, he added.

“This December, the maximum temperature will go up to 30 degrees and minimum will be 14 degrees, which are both extremes when compared to normal temperatures during December,” said Reddy.

Sundar M Metri, Director, India Meteorological Department (IMD), Bengaluru said, normally, it does not rain during winter. “This is because there will be no warmer air that will hold moisture content. But this time, as the cyclone in southwest Bay of Bengal has weakened into a deep depression, there will be some rain in south interior Karnataka, including Bengaluru. This is the reason for a decrease in temperature during day time.”

Health and environment experts say this difference in maximum and minimum temperature will affect ecological balance and also have an impact on human health. 
Dr Rajani M, Deputy Director, Health Department, said normally during winter, there will be no outbreaks of ilnesses. However, any change in weather, rain, humidity or temperature will lead to a spurt in cases of viral fever.

Environmentalist A N Yellappa 
Reddy attributed this extreme temperature difference to man-made destruction. “High emissions from vehicles, plastic burning and other reasons have resulted in the formation of heat islands in the 
atmosphere. Whenever sun rays penetrate such areas, more heat is generated which eventually causes extreme heat,” he said.

“This year, there has hardly been any fog or mist in the mornings. This change in temperature will cause adverse effect on bio-diversity,’’ he added.
