The trigger was incessant rain
One section of the historical Srirangapatna Fort, which witnessed many wars, collapsed on Tuesday.
The fort, at the riverine island of Srirangapatna, was already in a dilapidated state. The situation worsened after heavy rain lashed the temple town for the last few days causing an area near the main entrance of the fort to crumble.
The collapsed portions will be repaired soon, sources at Srirangapatna Town Municipal Council said. According to sources, the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) experts are expected to inspect the fort and prepare a plan to take up repair works.
Historical significance
The fort, on the banks of the Cauvery is one of the main archaeological and historical monuments in the country.
According to sources, the fort contained Tipu’s palace among other monuments, but was destroyed during the war. At present, it houses armoury and other historical monuments of the British-Tipu era. But many of them are on the verge of collapse.
Local residents visited the fort premises and have urged the ASI, local administration, and authorities concerned to initiate restoration of the fort.
