IN BARELY AN HOUR, BENGALURU RECEIVED 0.4MM RAIN WITH HAILSTORMS IN SEVERAL PARTS

Mercury dips to 34.8°C after heavy showers; city will stay cool for some days

The city received a good amount of rainfall on Friday evening with hailstorms in several parts. The showers have brought the temperature down to 34.8 degree Celsius.

The Met department says pre-monsoon showers are always an indication of the formation of clouds and rainfall with thunderstorms. The rainfall recorded was 0.4mm and the highest was recorded in HAL station, where it was 4.3mm.

The Met department officials said the city will witness cooler weather for the next three-four days. Srinivas Reddy, director of Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Cenre (KSNDMC), said, “These are pre-monsoon showers. The rainfall that the city is receiving from past two days is because of the active systems and there is also a trough coming from Maharashtra side.”

On Friday evening, India Meteorological Department’s (IMD) inference stated that there was a trough extending up to 1.5 km above mean sea level from south Madhya Maharashtra to Comorin areas across interior parts of Karnataka and interior Tamil Nadu persists.

However, the temperature this season has not gone above 35 degree Celsius IMD officials say. Ramesh Babu, a scientist from IMD said, “The highest temperature we witnessed around this time, was in 1996 when it had reached 37.6 degree Celsius. Last year, it was 37.1 and this year we temperature has not gone above 35 degree Celsius.”

2 flights diverted

The heavy downpour coupled with strong winds on Friday led to the diversion of two Bengaluru-bound flights to Chennai.

Due to the strong winds, the runway direction was changed at the Kempegowda International Airport and this resulted in overhead congestion.

“Owing to the strong wind, the runway direction was changed at 15.45 resulting in overhead congestions. This led to the diversion of two Bengaluru-bound Spice Jets to Chennai. Otherwise, its business as usual at the BLR Airport,” said a BIAL spokesperson.

Bengaluru experiences thunderstorm, temperature too sees a dip

Published: 31st March 2018 06:13 AM

BENGALURU: Bengaluru experienced thundershowers on Friday evening, which led to at least 13 trees getting uprooted across the city. KR Puram and its surrounding areas experienced the heaviest rainfall in the city. As per the Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre’s (KSNDMC) website, 80 mm per hour of rain was recorded at 4.30 pm. The weather helpline, Varuna Mitra, said the gauge at KR Puram recorded 46 mm of rainfall. The gauge at Doddabanahalli near Aavalahalli in Bengaluru East recorded 21 mm of rain, while the one at Yelahanka recorded 16.5 mm.

According to multiple tweets, ITPL and Whitefield received hailstones. The BBMP control room said that trees fell across the city, including Malleswaram and on Old Airport Road. A falling tree caused two electric poles to collapse at Banaswadi. However, no injuries were reported from these incidents.
KSNDMC Director Dr GS Srinivasa Reddy said the current rainfall was due to a trough formed in the atmosphere from over Maharashtra and extending up to Chennai, and passing through Karnataka. “There is thunderstorm activity and convective clouds are getting formed, which happens when the temperature increases. This phenomenon is common in the pre-monsoon period, and will bring down the temperature by 3-4 degrees,” he said.

State Sees Excess Rain In March

The forecast indicated that the rainfall would continue until April 7 or 8, but the forecast’s accuracy was more for the next three days, Reddy added. On Friday, several districts in south interior Karnataka, including Bengaluru Rural, Bengaluru Urban, Kolar, Chikkaballapur, Tumakuru, Mandya, Mysuru, Kodagu and Hassan received isolated to staggered rainfall. The state has greatly exceeded the ‘state normal for the month of March’, which is 8 mm, Reddy said. “Excess rainfall has been recorded in 24 districts, and only the Hyderabad-Karnataka region has received low rain,” he said.

Weatherman’s operations hampered by land shortage in Bengaluru

BENGALURU: Only 22 of the India Meteorological Department (IMD)’s 33 centres in Karnataka are full fledged, thanks to the government’s inability to provide it with adequate land parcels.
At centres which lack facilities, the IMD depends on government or private agencies for space, equipment and other purposes.
All that the department wants is a small piece of land — 5X5 metres, which is less than half of the residential plots given to economically weaker sections — wherever it has a centre.

Raja Ramesh, meteorologist with the Bengaluru centre, said they have been asking for land to meetexposure conditions like open space and fair distance from tall trees or other obstructions to record weather parameters like rain, temperature and wind speed.

“Unlike other departmental set-ups, there is no law or other backing to provide land for weather observatories in the state,” he pointed out.

A meteorologist said in places where they don’t have department-owned observatories, weather monitoring is compromised whenever they have to shift the facilities due to lack of space. “Take for instance, Hulikal in Shivamogga district, where we are struggling to install a proper rain gauge due to lack of adequate space. The place records the highest rainfall in the state and in southern India, but we are not able to record it properly,” he said.
IMD has 310 rain-gauge stations, including three in Bengaluru — on Palace Road, HAL and KIA.

Sources in the Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Cell (KSNDMC) also said their rain gauges at over 5,600 sites in the state face similar problems. “Most of these rain gauges are located in public health centres, gram panchayat premises or other government offices. Whenever these agencies want to expand or redevelop their premises, the first casualty will be rain gauges which they want us to shift to some other location,” they added.

Rain brings Bengaluru to its knees

UPDATED: MARCH 17, 2018 08:03 IST
At-least Eight flights were diverted while at least 21 were delayed

Heavy rains enveloped much of the city for the second day in a row on Friday, leading to diversion of flights, inundation of homes, erratic electricity supply and crippling of the city’s infrastructure.

The accompanying thunderstorm and wind on Friday evening saw eight flights — three from Delhi and one each from Kochi, Srinagar, Bagdogra, Patna and Abu Dhabi (UAE) — diverted to other airports while at least 21 flights were delayed.

According of Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), 30mm of rainfall was received in their station on Palace Road, much of it between 6.30 p.m. and 7.30 p.m.

The Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre (KSNDMC), which has localised rain gauges in the city, said the highest rainfall received was over 62.5mm, with the average rainfall being 14.5mm.

In the city, there was chaos on the streets as traffic — which was heavier than usual as commuters sought to leave the city over the festival weekend — as roads became water-logged at important junctions.

The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) control room said trees or branches had fallen in R.T. Nagar, Jayanagar, Jagajeevanram Nagar, Malleswaram and Vidyapeeta. The tree fall in Jayanagar saw traffic movement towards Banashankari come to a halt.

The sudden burst of rain also saw inundation of a few houses. Complaints were received from Kodichikkanahalli close to Madiwala lake, Gayathrinagar, C.V. Raman Nagar and K.P. Agrahara.

In many parts of the city, particularly the southern and eastern parts, homes were left without electricity. Bangalore Electricity Supply Company said it received 340 complaints during the time of heavy rains.

According to the IMD, the rains are the result of a depression in the Arabian Sea and will continue over the weekend, lowering in intensity.

Unseasonal rain brings relief from forest fires

Downpour also expected to ease water scarcity in two major tiger reserves

Unseasonal rain, moderate to heavy, in Nagarahole and Bandipur Tiger Reserves and in most parts of Kodagu district since Wednesday has brought temporary relief from forest fires.
The downpour is also expected to ease water scarcity in the country’s two major tiger reserves with several water bodies said to have dried up because of the continued dry spell.
Said to have triggered from a cyclone, the showers cooled the forests which had gone bone dry. Forest authorities were on their toes since the last many weeks to avert forest fires that are usually reported in summer.
Sources in the Forest Department said the rain has brought relief from outbreak of fires for at least the next two weeks with the downpour drenching the vegetation.
When contacted, Deputy Conservator of Forests (Madikeri) Maria Christu Raja, who holds additional charge as director of Nagarahole Tiger Reserve, said Nagarahole and most parts of south and north Kodagu received reasonably good rain since Wednesday. The downpour was concentrated on Thursday, he added.
He said the rain was widespread with most ranges of Nagarahole reserve receiving the showers since last two days. Rain has also been reported from Bandipur Tiger Reserve.
Come summer, the department mobilises their resources to safeguard forests from fires. The tiger reserves have taken measures to prevent fires.
Additional manpower, usually from the local tribal communities, is roped in to fight fires. In both the reserves, fire lines had been drawn, a routine exercise before the onset of summer to control spreading of fires. More men are usually deployed in those forest ranges that are prone to fires besides keeping water containers ready in key locations to attend to any minor fires.
In Shivamogga
Shivamogga, Tirthahalli, Hosanagar, and Sagar taluks received intermittent drizzle on Thursday owing to depression over the southeast Arabian Sea. The drizzle brought welcome relief from the simmering heat being experienced from the last 10 days. Cloudy sky prevailed in Shivamogga city for most part of the day. Maximum temperature that was around 34C plummeted to 29C on Thursday.
In Hassan
Heavy rain lashed Hassan city on Thursday evening. It started drizzling around 3.30 p.m. and was followed by heavy rain around 5.30 p.m to 7 p.m. Many employees and schoolchildren returning home were stuck in traffic.
Many roads were flooded causing difficulty to motorists. Power supply was disrupted in many localities. Parts of Holenarsipur, Channarayapatna and Arkalgud taluks also received rain.

Droughts leave kids too short, too thin in various districts of Karnataka: UNICEF

BENGALURU: Consecutive droughts experienced in different districts of Karnataka is taking a toll, especially on women and children, according to a report by the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF). The droughts have left “about one-third (36 per cent) of children under 5 years of age stunted or too short for their age”, while 26 per cent are wasted - too thin for their height. This is according to a report by UNICEF’s Disaster Risk Reduction Section, which was published in “Drought Management Strategies - Compendium of Best Practices Adopted in Drought Management”, released by Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Cell. “Karnataka has encountered successive droughts during the last 10 years adversely impacting nutritional status of women and children significantly,” the paper said. It was released during the two-day national conference on drought management strategies, organised by the state government and KSNDMC.

High prevalence of stunting
According to a report by Mahalanobis National Crop Forecast Centre, 16 of the 24 districts in the country with chronic drought were in Karnataka. As a result, the prevalence of childhood stunting ranged widely in Karnataka - “from 19% in Mandya district to 56% in Koppal”. Similarly, in Kalaburagi and Yadgir the prevalence was over 50% while it varied between 40-50% in six other districts. “Districts with a high prevalence of stunting are in northern half of the state,” the report said.

The UNICEF report noted that 26% of children are too thin for their height, and about 35% were underweight due to either chronic or acute undernutrition triggered by the droughts. “Karnataka is among the states with the highest wasting levels across the country and has shown an increase of 48% in the last decade, which is the highest in the country,” it said.

With respect to the status of nutrition among women and adolescent girls, one-fifth or 20% of all women aged 15-45 years had low body mass index, indicative of undernutrition. In this case, more number of such cases were reported in districts such as Yadgir and Koppal, which have been hit by consecutive droughts.
The report also noted that such health issues were prevalent in regions which depended mostly on rain-fed agriculture. “A cascading effect of drought is seen through reduced production, reduced availability of food, fodder and drinking water, worsening human and animal health, their mortality and out-migration,” it said.

Use technology to tackle drought, says Revenue Minister Kagodu Thimmappa

BENGALURU: Revenue Minister Kagodu Thimmappa has called for the use of advanced technologies to provide long term solution to deal with drought, as was causing widespread distress, especially in rural areas.
He said this on Thursday during his address at a two-day national conference organised by Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre (KSNDMC) and state agriculture department on best practices adopted in drought mitigation measures. Experts from 14 different states attended the meet.
He lamented that even after spending crores to deal with drought nothing substantial has been achieved. "Karnataka has faced drought many times in the past. Apart from affecting farmers, it also poses serious threat to food security and economic condition of the state," he added.
He pointed out that in the past 15 years, state has witnessed drought 13 times and batted for use of advanced technologies and scientific methods to deal with drought.
In his address, Agriculture Minister Krishna Byregowda said that drought has to be taken seriously it impacts food production by 25 percent as per centre's latest Economic Survey and is a bane on the farm sector.
"There is a need to look at drought from the grassroots level. And it has to be approached with short, mid-term and long term measures." He also suggested a change in the crop pattern followed by our farmers and insisted on shifting attention towards millets.

The heat is on and there’s more to come: KSNDMC

Bengaluru: We are just in the first week of March and the sun appears merciless. However, weathermen clarified the temperature was 34 degrees Celsius and it was quite normal at this time of the year. They warn there is more to come by March end, April and May.

Srinivas Reddy, Director of Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre (KSNDMC) told Deccan Chronicle, “There is no sudden jump in the normal summer temperature. For the coming days IMD system has forecast that South Interior Karnataka, including Bengaluru, could witness a slight increase of 0.5 degrees and North Interior Karnataka one degree. But in isolated areas, the variation from the normal weather could be  3-4 degrees.”

Asked why even though there is no big variation in the normal temperature,  Bengalureans have started to feel the heat, Reddy said, “As night temperatures are still low, evenings and nights are pleasant. Weather will be pleasant till 8 am and after that people start feeling the heat as the weather is transiting from winter to summer.”

The all-time record in the city for March is 37.3 degrees Celsius. Looking at the prevailing weather system, temperatures in the city may not cross 36 degrees, Reddy said. He said if high temperature continues it will lead to the formation of conducive currents and bring rain and thereby bring down mercury.

Reddy said, “As the city and some parts of the state witnessed heavy rains between August and October last year, there will be water available for the birds, livestock and plants.”

No water crisis this summer: Mayor
There will be no water scarcity this summer, said Mayor Sampath Raj, who visited the Ground Level Reservoir at High Grounds along with BWSSB officials. After the inspection and discussion with BWSSB officials, he said, "BWSSB is ready with its contingency plan to handle the drinking water needs in the city and as a part of its plan it has already kept 68 water tankers ready to supply water to the areas which could experience scarcity. And this will be monitored by a senior official of the water board by carrying out inspections across the city.”

He said BWSSB staff will be deputed at the BBMP control rooms and will be tasked with the job of handling and resolving water related complaints recorded by BBMP control room. If you have any water related issue you can call *BWSSB’s 24X7 helpline 1916 or 080-2223888.*

Temperature may touch 40 degrees in Bengaluru this summer (2018)

BENGALURU: The summer season this year is expected to be harsher as maximum temperatures are likely to shoot up by nearly 30 C above normal in April at isolated places across the state. The maximum temperature in Bengaluru, which was known for its salubrious climate, is likely to touch 40 Celsius.

The Karnataka State Natural Disaster Management Centre (KSNDMC)  Director Srinivasa Reddy told The New Indian Express that  the maximum temperature in Bengaluru this year is likely to cross 39 C in April.  “The highest in the recent past is 39.60 C in 2015. However, this year, the summer could be harsher. Scientists says due to global warming, a 10 C rise has been witnessed in the last 50 years. But, if we take Bengaluru, it has risen by more than 1 degree in the last one decade itself. This is alarming,’’ he said.

Mango showers
KSNDMC authorities say Bengaluru will experience its first summer showers (known popularly as April showers or mango showers) around March 15. “The heat is so much that it is natural it will rain,’’ Reddy said.

The Karnataka State Natural Disaster Management Centre (KSNDMC) authority has forecast that on an average, south-interior Karnataka including Bengaluru, Kolar, Tumakuru, Chikkaballapur, Ramanagara, Mandya and Mysuru — will witnesses a minimum rise of 0.5 degrees Celsius above normal.Regions in north-interior Karnataka like Ballari, Koppal, Kalaburagi, Gadag and Vijayapura will witness at least one degree rise in temperatures.

KSNDMC Director Srinivasa Reddy told The New Indian Express that although the average temperature increase will be between 0.5 to 1 degree Celsius, there will be an increase of 2-3 degrees Celsius in isolated places across the state in April.Prof M B Rajegowda, an agrometeorologist at University of Agricultural Sciences (UAS), Bengaluru, says the summer temperature is predicted based on geographical location, water bodies, vegetation index, rainfall pattern and other parameters.

“Last year, the winter was not severe. Also, there were not much North-East nonsoon showers in November and December. This resulted in the atmosphere remaining dry with no moisture content and rising temperature in February. Normally, temperature increase is noticed in April, but that trend is now seen in March. This also means, summer has advanced.”

Further Rajegowda said that between 1880 and 1980, there was an increase in temperature by 1 degree Celsius in Bengaluru. But from 1980 to 2000, in a span of 20 years, it increased further by 1 degree Celsius.

“This was a global phenomenon and India and Karnataka too witnessed the same trend. On a positive note, after 2000, there was campaign and awareness on global warming.“In the last 18 years, the temperature rise has been less than 1 degree. We need to reduce carbon components and increase vegetation. This is the only way to fight global warming,’’ he said.
