Sporadic rain to continue in State

Certain parts of the State may continue to receive showers in the next two days.

According to Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre (KSNDMC), a cyclonic circulation over Telangana and parts of Karnataka has been causing rainfall over interior Karnataka.

“A trough over Arabian Sea, and passing through Karnataka and Maharashtra, is also contributing to the weather change. These two systems are causing heavy rain over Telangana and Rayalaseema, and also bringing rain to Chamarajanagar, Ballari and Kalaburagi districts,” said G.S. Srinivas Reddy, director, KSNDMC, adding that sporadic rain is expected on Tuesday in interior parts of the State.

The city will be under a partly clouded sky on Tuesday, which is likely to bring down the temperature. “Certain parts of Bengaluru may also receive some showers,” Mr. Reddy said.

On Monday, the city recorded a maximum temperature of 29.6 degree Celsius and minimum temperature of 19 degree Celsius.

Rain predicted over next few days.

The state is likely to witness sporadic rain at several areas, bringing some respite from the scorching heat that was prevalent over the past few days. Close on the lines of the forecast, Bengaluru and other adjoining districts witnessed cloudy weather conditions on Sunday.
According to the Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Cell (KSNDMC), the rain is due to the fast-changing weather conditions over North Interior Karnataka.

“We have noticed upper air circulation over North Interior Karnataka region coupled with intense clouds along the Eastern Coast. This could result in a few spells of rain on Monday and Tuesday in some parts of the state,” said Dr G S Sreenivasa Reddy added

Faultlines surface, Bengaluru more prone to low-intensity quakes

BENGALURU: Bengaluru region is not safe from earthquakes. Arkavati plate, on which the city and surrounding districts sit, has developed active faults,
leaving the region at the risk of earthquakes. Such quakes will be of very low magnitude.Ramesh Dikpal, a scientist in the earthquake division of Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre (KSNDMC), told TOI the development of faults by the Arkavati plate has been confirmed by an analysis of recent seismic hazard map from the Bureau of Indian Standards.

“Our centre with 14 stations has been monitoring seismic activities in Karnataka in the past decade. Recordings in Bengaluru and surrounding districts come from the observatory at Tippagondanahalli dam site. Every few months, we hear anecdotes of micro-tremors. The latest seismic activity recorded was at Channapatna in 2017, and at Kanakapura in 2014. Both were of a very low magnitude. There was no damage at all,” he added

Scientist Ramesh Dikpal said Hosadurga belt of Chitradurga has also developed faultlines, resulting in low-magnitude quakes over the past few years. “On November 13, 2018, a 1.6-magnitude quake was recorded at our Chitradurga observatory. In 2013, Chitradurga recorded seven quakes, and one with 2.5 magnitude had its epicentre at Sigehatti village,” he added.

KSNDMC experts said the seismic hazard map of India puts Karnataka in Zone II (least active) and Zone III (moderate). “Coastal and northern-interior districts bordering Maharashtra are in Zone III, and the rest, including Bengaluru, lie in Zone II. In the recent studies, several active faults have been
identified in Chitradurga, Bhatkal, Udupi and Bengaluru region. Much of the seismic activity in Karnataka has been in the south, especially in the Bengaluru-Mysuru region, in the recent years. Historically, tremors have occurred in many other parts of the state such as Ballari,” an expert said.

If we abuse nature, hijack lake beds this is all that will happen Savitha KL

KSNDMC director GS Srinivasa Reddy said geological activities are on the rise in several parts of the world. “Proximity to faults does not translate into ahigher hazard. Damage from earthquakes depends on numerous factors — subsurface geology and adherence to the building codes,” Reddy added.

August tremors in Bengaluru due to quarry effect?

Tremors that created panic in RR Nagar, Kengeri and neighbouring areas of Bengaluru in August 2018 could be due to blasting at stone quarries. KSNDMC scientists said their observatory at TG Halli didn’t record any tremors at that time. In April 2017, residents of RR Nagar, Kengeri and
Bannerghatta Road had experienced similar tremors, spreading panic.

Govt told to conserve KRS water for drinking purposes

Mysuru: The Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre (KSNDMC) has recommended the Karnataka government reserve 15tmcft of water at KRS dam for drinking purposes till June. It recommended the government release water for agricultural and other purposes only after ensuring that enough drinking water is available in all dams of the state, including KRS which is the lifeline for Mysuru and Bengaluru cities.

KSNDMC director GS Srinivas Reddy said every month 3tmcft of water is required to meet the drinking water demands of Mysuru, Bengaluru, 47 others towns including Mandya, and over 625 villages which depend on KRS dam. "Therefore, 15tmcft of water is required at KRS dam for the next five months," he said.

"Due to the good storage level in all dams, we hope this year there won’t be a drinking water crisis," he added.

Drop in inflow

Reddy said one reason for poor inflow to all major reservoirs of South Karnataka now is poor rainfall after the underground water level is sinking. In summer, underground water is the major source for inflow into rivers. This year, as the underground water table is also sinking due
to various reasons, inflow also has come down," he said.

Ganga Ram Baderiya, principal secretary, revenue department (disaster management, Bhoomi and UPOR), said every year after February all decisions regarding water usage and release from dams are taken by regional commissioners of respective regions.

Kuraburu Shanthakumar, president, Karnataka Rajya Kabbu Belegarara Sangha, said for another 15 days, water is required for several standing crops in Mandya and Mysuru districts. "Sugarcane has been harvested so there’s no major problem. But for other crops, we’re looking for water release for the next 15 days. Compared to previous years, this year we didn't face any water crisis for agriculture," he said.

CWPRS team in district to conduct trial blast near KRS JAN 24 2019, 22:09PM IST

A team of scientists from the Central Water and Power Research Station (CWPRS), Pune, are in the
district to conduct a trial blast to study the impact of stone quarrying on Krishnaraja Sagar (KRS) dam,
in Srirangapatna taluk.
The Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre (KSNDMC) had submitted a report, warning
that unabated mining in villages around KRS would aect the dam.
The district administration had imposed a temporary ban on mining in a radius of 20 km around the
dam.

As various organisations urged the government to conduct a study, by a competent organisation, the
CWPRS was requested to conduct a trial.
The team arrived in the district on Thursday and will conduct a trial blast on the North side of the
dam, for five days from Friday.
The district administration has issued a press release, restricting movement of people and vehicles
near the dam during the test.
Complaint
Meanwhile, RTI activist K R Ravindra lodged a complaint with the Forest department against district
administration, saying that the test explosion should be conducted only aer getting necessary
permission from the Union Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change. The blast should not
be allowed to be conduct in sensitive zones in the forest and near the bird sanctuary, he said.
Suspicion over order
He has raised suspicion over the order for another study while a government organisation has already
given a report that mining activity will aect the dam.
The miners too have conducted an independent study by a private agency and have got a report that
there is no danger to the dam. Succumbing to the pressure of the mining barons, the Deputy
Commissioner has given permission to conduct a test.
The study should be conducted under the supervision of the Union Ministry of Environment and
Forest, he stressed.
However, DC N Manjushri said, “The district administration has given permission for the study in the
interest

Cold weather chills Bengaluru, fog hits flights IANS | Bengaluru

Cold weather with a minimum temperature of 12 degrees Celsius was recorded in Bengaluru, with fog affecting flights, officials said on Monday.

While the minimum temperature was 12.9 degrees Celsius in the city, maximum temperature stood at 31.7 degrees Celsius, according to the Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre (KSNDMC).

Cold waves from the northern part of the country towards the south have brought down the temperatures in the city, which is likely to continue till January 10, KSNDMC Director G.S. Srinivasa Reddy told IANS earlier.

The departure of 41 flights and arrival of one flight was delayed as a result of the fog during morning hours, the Bengaluru International Airport Ltd (BIAL) said.

The airport, which sees an average of 300 arrivals and departures each daily, also suspended its operations from 6.41 a.m. to 7.23 a.m. due to low visibility.

Karnataka weather: Winter chills to the bone as mercury dips sharply

Historically, the lowest temperature recorded in Bengaluru in the month of January was 7.8° Celsius on January 13, 1884.

BENGALURU: The winter chill may not have given Karnataka a miss, after all. Many parts of the state have witnessed a steep drop in minimum temperatures over the past few days.

While Bengaluru and its surrounding areas woke up to another chilly morning on Wednesday, with many parts of the city recording temperatures around the 10° Celsius mark, the lowest minimum temperature of 4.1° Celsius was recorded at Almel hobli in Vijayapura district, according to the Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Cell (KSNDMC).

In Bengaluru, Hesaraghatta, with its vast green expanses, saw the coldest morning with mercury levels at 9° Celsius, the least minimum temperature registered in the city in more than a decade. Elsewhere, people in Dharwad, Vijayapura, Belagavi, Bidar, Kalaburagi, Shivamogga and other places too experienced biting cold as minimum temperatures were in the range of 4-6° C.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an alert for cold wave conditions in parts of Karnataka for the second day in a row. Cold wave to severe cold wave conditions prevailed at a few places over north-interior Karnataka and cold wave conditions were observed at isolated places over south-interior Karnataka.

The changed weather conditions saw 84.2% of the geographical area of the state record minimum temperatures in the range of 8°C to 14°C on Wednesday. Minimum temperatures in many parts of the state were 2-3° degrees C below normal. Forecasts indicate that the cold weather will continue for the next two-three days.

The Met department recorded 11.1° Celsius at Kempegowda International Airport and 11.5° C at HAL. The lowest temperature recorded in Bengaluru since 2008 was in 2012 at 12° Celsius.

Historically, the lowest temperature recorded in Bengaluru in the month of January was 7.8° Celsius on January 13, 1884.

The KSNDMC data showed that several other parts of the city also recorded a dip in temperatures. Regions in Bengaluru North were colder than those in Bengaluru South, according to KSNDMC scientist S S M Gavaskar. Among the areas that recorded minimum temperatures around the 10° Celsius mark included Chikkajala at 10.7° Celsius, Yelahanka and Kengeri at 10.3° C and Tavarekere at 10.1° C.

According to IMD forecast, cold wave conditions have abated in the northern parts of the country. “Cold wave conditions are isolated pockets over eastern parts of central India and interior peninsular India are likely to continue during the next 1-2 days,” said the forecast.

Bengaluru shivers, sees almost decadal low in temperature

BENGALURU: “ How on earth is Bengaluru so cold.” “Too cold today than usual #Bangalore.” Twitter is abuzz with netizens pouring their views on Bengaluru weather, which has suddenly turned colder in the last few days. In fact, on Tuesday night, Bengaluru city almost hit a decadal low when it came to minimum temperature recorded for the city in January. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the lowest minimum temperature for Bengaluru city for the month of January was recorded at 12 degrees Celsius in 2012. In 2009, the reading had touched 12.1 degrees Celsius. On Tuesday night, the mercury levels dipped to 12.4 degrees Celsius. The all-time low temperature for Bengaluru city, however, was recorded on January 13, 1884, when the mercury dropped to 7.8 degrees Celsius. “Woke up to a cold morning in Bangalore today... Went back to bed and snuggled inside the rajai and had masala tea .Brrr,” tweeted Lakshmi Sharath. An official at the meteorological centre, Bengaluru, said cold wave conditions prevailing at isolated places over south interior Karnataka, prolonged dry weather and clear sky conditions are reasons why Bengaluru is experiencing colder nights. “If these weather systems continue, there are chances of temperatures falling further. As on Wednesday, the lowest minimum temperature saw a departure of 3.4 degrees Celsius from the normal for the month,” he added. The weatherman has predicted fog or mist during early-morning hours in some areas of Bengaluru. “Maximum & minimum temperatures very likely to be around 28 and 13 degrees Celsius, respectively,” read the weather bulletin. Breeze from northeast Pro f MB Rajegowda, an agro-meteorologist who works at the University of Agricultural Sciences, Bengaluru, however, said colder nights are natural during this season. “The period between December 15 and January 15 is the time when Bengaluru experience its coldest nights. But when there is a clear sky and there is effect of colder breeze from northeastern part of the country, the intensity of chill becomes severe,” he added. North Karnataka hit as well The officer further said cold wave to severe cold wave conditions are prevailing over a few places in north interior Karnataka. Bidar, which hit an all-time low of 6 degrees Celsius on Tuesday, saw only marginal improvement on Wednesday, with the lowest minimum temperature reading 7.2 degrees Celsius

State shivers as intense cold wave sweeps

An intense and sweeping cold wave has gripped the entire state of Karnataka in the last two-days.
The mercury levels plummeted as low as 9 degrees Celsius in the outskirts of Bengaluru. A bonebiting 4.5 degrees Celsius was recorded at Bidar and Vijayapura in North Karnataka region on Wednesday.
The meteorological experts attribute the intense cold condition to accelerating north-westerly
winds sweeping over the plains of northern India, and engulfing the southern peninsular region.
The intensity of the cold wave is such that the neighbouring Telangana has sounded an ‘orange
alert’ across the state. The burgeoning extreme cold conditions have already le the cool
Bengaluru shivering.
Acknowledging the cold condition, Dr G S Srinivasa Reddy, Director, Karnataka State Natural
Disaster Monitoring Cell (KSNDMC), revealed to DH that the minimum temperature across
Bengaluru has plummeted by up to 4 degrees Celsius.
“Areas in Bengaluru North have witnessed minimum temperature ranging from 9 degree Celsius to
11 degrees Celsius, while the central and southern areas have recorded 12 degrees Celsius on
followed by Yelahanka (10C) and Kempegowda International Airport (11.1C),” Dr Reddy explained.
Sources also explained that the record lowest minimum temperature in Bengaluru was recorded
way back in 1984 with the mercury dropping to 7.8C.
“In recent times, during 2009 the temperature levels had fallen to 12.1 degrees Celsius,” Dr Reddy
added.C S Patil, Director-in-charge, IMD, Bengaluru, explained that the condition is likely to prevail over
the southern peninsula for another couple of days. “The prevailing clear skies over the peninsular
region have only paved way for the intense cold wave to sweep over most of the southern states.”
Recordings at KSNDMC stations across North Karnataka region have le many surprised.
“The regions across North Karnataka have been the coldest in the state. Sindagi in Vijayapura has
recorded the lowest temperature of 4.5 degrees Celsius on Wednesday followed by Bidar (4.7C),” Dr Reddy revealed.
The KSNDMC scientists have also advised people to be watchful of the sweeping cold wave.

Arthritis patients will also likely suer due to bone-biting cold conditions as they will reel under
intense pain. With the cold conditions severe between 4 am and 7 am, the morning walkers and

joggers need to be cautious of the weather, and keep themselves warm,” Dr Reddy cautioned.
