Why did Bengaluru go six feet under during the weekend? Because city administrators sat on their hands all this while. Result: Over 100 trees fell, snapping power lines and plunging the city into darkness
Monday morning blues were excruciating for most Bengalureans when they saw gigantic trees reduced to puny stumps – Sunday night’s rains had wreaked havoc on Bengaluru.
Trees collapsing due to gale force winds and heavy rains is not a new phenomenon for Bengaluru; if you thought that this year it’s worse because rains have been lashing the city relentlessly, you are wrong. Between March
1 and May 27, Bengaluru received 166.5 mm cumulative rainfall. Last year, during the same period, it was over 250 mm. “This figure is calculated from the data available from about 1,000 Telemetric Rain Gauges installed
across the Bangalore Urban District,” said SN Gavaskar of the Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre (KSNDMC).
“We have been warning the state government every day since the beginning of this year’s pre-monsoon season. Based on the warning they were supposed to take necessary action,” said Geeta Agnihotri, head of India
Meteorological Department (IMD), Bengaluru.

So what happened?
In two words – rigor mortis. It has become a habit for the Mayor, Minister for Bengaluru Development and other officials to visit some rain-affected areas and pull up junior officials in front of the cameras. But to
Bengalureans, it’s as clear as Talakaveri water that these visits are just PR exercise.
On the ground, the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahangara Palike (BBMP) has taken few steps to protect the city, its citizens and its natural beauty. There are 21 teams of tree cutters with the BBMP forest department but they are
yet to get arrears worth crores of rupees for the last few years and are thus reluctant to take up fresh work.
BBMP Deputy Conservator of Forests MK Cholarajappa couldn’t be bothered more. He says his duty ends once he forwards the details of the arrears to higher authorities.
Indiscriminate trimming of branches, cutting of roots for infrastructure work and concretising footpaths around trees are some of the other ways in which the BBMP strikes the fatal blow.
“Many trees in the city that have no space around the stumps. Concretising pavements without leaving any space around the tree stumps for percolation of rain water will weaken the trees,” says Suresh Heblikar, an
environmentalist.
That’s not all. BBMP is not taking steps to ensure that the lost green cover is somehow replenished. “Not a single sapling was planted during last year. No BBMP authorities or elected representatives have bothered about
the need to plant more and more saplings,” says Vijay Nishanth, an urban conservationist and animal activist.
Heblikar says that the main reason trees fell in such large numbers is the lack of an expert committee for identification of old and decayed trees. “The BBMP had constituted an expert committee more than a decade ago
when MR Sreenivasa Murthy was BBMP Commissioner. Ironically, the expert team became defunct after two months. Till now, no effort has been made for constituting an expert committee,” he says.
“The concretisation of pavements and drains is the main reason for the trees becoming weak. The other reason is indiscriminate and unscientific trimming of tree branches by Bescom employees. Cutting of tree branches
causes fungus and termite infestations thus making trees weak,” says SG Neginhal, the man responsible for the hundreds of trees that line Bengaluru’s roads.
Chaos at KIA
Sunday’s heavy downpour inconvenienced fliers. For about half an hour, between 8.17 pm and 8.51 pm, no flights took off or landed due to inclement weather, leading to a cascading effect. At least 10 flights were diverted
to nearby airports as landing was not possible.
However, many passengers had a nightmarish experience as the roads leading to the airport were chock-a-block. A hoarding had collapsed near the Trumpet Intersection resulting in slow movement of traffic.
Passengers also faced difficulties due to the unavailability of cabs.
“Pathetic to see @BLRAirport disintegrated to its lowest level till date. 90 minutes waiting for taxi. Unscientific queue for taxi. Mosquito menace. People sleeping in airport premises with blankets & mosquito net. Overall 3rd
grade bus stand feeling,” @RameshBeeke said.

The dark ages
Bescom took a heavy beating on Sunday night -- not only did its transformers collapse and power lines snapped, it also faced the ire of Bengalureans who had a powerless night. In Singanayakanahalli and Rajanukunte
divisions, there was a power outage of over 20 hours. The E4 sub division which provides power to areas like Shanti Niketan and Bagmane Tech Park has been supplying power for only four four hours each day for the
past three days. Residents of Cooke Town and Malleswaram too faced the brunt of power outage as the area reeled under a power cut of over 15 hours. RT Nagar 1st Block area had to face a power outage of over 20

The rains are not just going to stop here. The met department officials say that the rains might continue till

Sunday. The officials said that the heavy downpour on Friday in Bengaluru was unexpected, Saturday looks

pretty dry and on Sunday citizens can expect another round of rainfall.

On Friday afternoon several parts of North and South Bengaluru received heavy rainfall with thunderstorms.

SM Gavaskar, a scientist at Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Center (KSNDMC) said, “The

Friday’s rainfall with thunderstorm and hailstorm was because of pre-monsoon clouds. There are still premonsoon showers expected for few more days.”

He also said that Friday’s forecast was a little clearer, Saturday looks dry and Sunday another rounds of

rainfall expected.

Bengaluru recorded the highest rainfall of 90mm in Gantiganahalli in Bengaluru North region, 78 mm in

Bettahalasuru, 64mm at Hemmigepura in Bengaluru South region, 66mm at Avalahalli and 74mm at

Yelahanka region

The recorded range of rainfall on Friday was 0-52mm in the urban area. There was also hailstorms in

Bengaluru-Mangaluru highway and some parts of Bengaluru South.

Met officials also said that the temperature is expected to come down by 2-3 degree Celsius. An official from

the met department said, “Regardless of the changes in the temperature, summer will end by May and

monsoon will start by June, as the thunderstorms aren’t considerable factors here. Majority of the state will

have a high temperature, only a few districts of South Interior Karnataka and Bengaluru will have a lower

temperature.

All ‘hail’ the rain, Bengaluru

Bengaluru: The city witnessed heavy downpour on Friday afternoon and some parts even experienced hailstorm, much to the excitement of children.

Manyata Tech Park, M.G. Road, Cunningham Road and surrounding areas received hail storm. They were the size of pebbles, and children were seen excitedly collecting them..

Several trees got uprooted due to high-speed winds and a car got damaged in Jayanagar after tree fell on it. Tree falls were also reported at Malleswaram, Rajarajeshwarinagar Nagar, Mysore Road and Dairy Circle.

The rain caught many people unawares and they had to scurry for cover at bus stops and other covered places.

Those returning from office had harrowing time due to slow moving traffic. There was water logging at the entry and exit ramps of flyovers and underpasses. Traffic flow was also affected due to vehicle breakdown in some places.

Traffic jams were more acute in areas where white topping or metro work was in progress.

Karnataka State Natural Disaster Management Cell (KSNDMC) Director told Deccan Chronicle that it is common to have hailstorm during pre-monsoon showers.

The sudden drop in temperature in atmosphere results in hailstorm. Cyclonic circulation was observed in south interior Karnataka, he explained.

The city will continue to get thundershowers for the next three days.

However, this year’s monsoon will be delayed as it is expected to reach Kerala by June 4, instead of June 1. Hence it will take one more week to reach Karnataka, he added.

Water level in Karnataka’s 13 major dams down to 19% 

BENGALURU: Karnataka is feeling the pinch of summer with water levels in most dams touching a new low. Only 155 tmcft (thousand million cubic feet) of live storage is left in 13 major reservoirs. The stock is only 18.8% of the total storage capacity of 825 tmcft.

Reservoirs like Hemavathi in Hassan district, Tungabhadra in Koppal, Ghataprabha and Malaprabha in Belagavi are the worst hit, according to data by the Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre (KSNDMC).
A KSNDMC official said the water levels in dams of north Karnataka, which is already reeling under the pressure of successive droughts, are a matter of concern.
Water levels in dams of Cauvery basin tell a different story. KRS dam has only 16% of the total storage capacity and the situation in Kabini (23%), Harangi (14%) and Hemavathi (10%) is also similar. “The situation in south Karnataka is comparatively better. Given the present storage, there won’t be any problem for drinking water for Bengaluru, Mysuru and Mandya which are dependent on KRS dam. However, ensuring water for standing crops in the river basin is a challenge,” an official said.

North Karnataka pins hope on Maharashtra water

The inflow to these dams has become nil for a few weeks. Early monsoon can save districts dependent on these dams from a crisis. North Karnataka is pinning hopes on release of water from Maharashtra,” a KSNDMC official said.
With water levels depleting, generation of hydro-power will also be a tough ask in the coming weeks.
Live storage in a dam is the water that can be released for irrigation, flood control and to generate electricity. On the other hand, dead storage refers to critical water stock that cannot be released through gates, but needs to be pumped out. Dead storage is used only during extreme situations like severe drinking water shortage

BENGALURU: Karnataka State Natural Disaster Management Centre (KSNDMC) Director Srinivas Reddy said starting Saturday, many parts of the state, especially south interior Karnataka, will receive rains till Tuesday.

According to Reddy, a trough has formed in the coastal areas of Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh, the influence of which can be seen in Karnataka. This has resulted in light to moderate rains in some parts of South Karnataka and there will be heavy rainfall in a few places, he said. “This will go on for the next three days. However, this year’s pre-monsoon showers are less compared to last year. The state is facing a deficit,’’ he said. 

As per KSNDMC’s data, from March till date, the state should get 62 mm of rainfall on an average. However, the state received only 36 mm. According to IMD-Bengaluru, there will be rainfall, accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds.

Bengaluru to receive rainfall for three more days, says KSNMDC

Bengaluru: The state will receive light to medium rainfall over the next three to four days, said Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre (KSNMDC) on Saturday (May 11).

This is the pre-monsoon rainfall and the KSNMDC has also warned of increase in the temperature. Rainfall along with thunder and lighting is expected in interior south Karnataka, coastal regions and Malnad regions for three days.

However, there are no signs of rainfall for two days in Uttara Kannada. But there are chances of the arid regions of Uttara Karnataka too receiving rainfall after Tuesday, said KSNMDC director Shrinivas Reddy, speaking to Kannada Prabha.

He also said that Bengaluru will receive rainfall on Sunday (May 12). The city experienced showers in the wee hours of Sunday and rainfall is expected in the evening too.

Meanwhile, it rained heavily in various regions including Bengaluru rural, Chikkamagaluru, Chamarajanagar, Chikkaballapura, Chitradurga, Hassan, Davanagere, Kodagu, Kolar, Mandya, Mysuru, Shivamogga, Ramanagar and Tumakuru on Saturday.

Mysuru reportedly received the highest, 53.5 mm rainfall, followed by Chamarajanagar (53 mm), Uttara Kannada (38.1 mm), Bengaluru (36 mm), Mandya (32.5 mm), Hassan (24 mm) and Bengaluru Rural (16 mm), stated KSNMDC.

The reason for the rainfall is said to be trough formed in the coastal areas of Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh. Karnataka is receiving rains due this change in environment in the neighbouring states. However, the KSNMDC director has stated that this year’s pre-monsoon showers are less compared to last year and that the state is facing a rainfall deficit.

According to KSNDMC’s data, the state has received only 36 mm average rainfall when expected rainfall is 66 mm.

Mayor Gangambike Mallikarjun visited Ms. Pooja at the hospital on Wednesday and announced that the civic body would bear all expenses for her treatment.

As many as 63 trees and 75 branches fell in the city during the rain on Tuesday. G.S. Srinivas Reddy, director, Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Cell (KSNDMC), said the rain was accompanied by high-speed winds, leading to large-scale tree-falls.

Citizens’ groups and activists argue that the figures indicate that the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike had not taken up pruning of tree branches and removal of dead trees despite conducting special drives. According to activist Vijay Nishanth, the forest division is understaffed: there are only 12 people including the Deputy Conservator of Forests (DCF).

“Further, digging up of roads has led to pruning of tree roots, making them more prone to falling,” he said.

DCF Cholarajappa was not available for comment.

Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy on Wednesday held a meeting to assess rain preparedness with BBMP, BDA, BWSSB, and Bescom officials and pulled them up for lack of preventive measures. He directed officials to take all precautionary measures to prevent any mishaps and inconvenience to citizens during the rains.

Thunderstorms and rains for the next two days in the city

Heavy rainfall lashed parts of the city on Tuesday afternoon. But don’t be in a hurry to put away the rain coat. A latest advisory from the Met department predicts rain for two more days.
“Light to moderate spell of rain is likely to affect Bengaluru district for the next two days,” says the advisory. Director of India Meteorological Department (IMD), Geetha Agnihotri, said, “The pre-monsoon season, that
spans from March to May, sees a lot of thunderstorms and rains. The days are sunny and hot. But clouds are formed due to the presence of moisture in the air which results in rain. The thunderstorms are caused due to
the heating up of the land.” This is different from the monsoon season, where presence of persistent clouds lead to cloudy and cold weather. The main reason for the change is the formation of troughs over parts of
Karnataka.

Sunil Gavaskar, meteorologist from Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre (KSNDMC) said, “South Interior karnataka, the coastal areas and Malnad region are expected to have thunderstorm activity, along
with some gale, dusty winds and light to moderate rains for the next two to three days. The temperature will be high, but by the evening it will come down because of the rains. The parts of North Interior karnataka is
expected to be 2-3° more than the normal temperature.”

Bangalore LIVE News updates: Heavy rain accompanied by gusty winds lashed Bengaluru on Tuesday night. Several trees were uprooted, disrupting traffic and waterlogging in various parts of the city.

According to the BBMP control room, trees were uprooted in Banashankari, Baggulaguntai, Peenya, Malleswaram, MIA Layout, Bagalgunte, Jakkasandra, Dynamic Factory, Sanjaynagar Dollars Colony, Bhadrappa layout, Yajnalli Om Shakti temple, Gayathrinagar, Rajaji Nagar, Seshadripuarm and KR Road.

Trees fell on cars near Devegowda petrol bunk in Padmanabhanagar, and near Lalbagh Metro station. Waterlogging was reported from Bilekahalli and other areas on Bannerghatta Road, Yeshwantpur, Bellandur, HSR Layout, BTM Layout, Koramangala and other areas. The highest rainfall in the city on Tuesday was recorded at Doddabidarakallu, which received 147 mm.

Meanwhile, The Bengaluru Police and the Karnataka State Industrial Security Force(KSISF) went into a tizzy Monday evening after a man suspected of carrying a prohibited item refused to cross the security check at the Majestic metro station. Minutes after he walked away, the Bengaluru Metro was put on high alert.
