Dipping water levels in dams ring alarming bells for City.. Thursday 24 March 2016 Water level in the four major reservoirs in the Cauvery basin would come down by half due to evaporation, if the temperature continues to hover around 36 degree Celsius for the next three months. This could lead to a severe water crisis in Bengaluru, Mandya and other places, says Dr G S Srinivasa Reddy, director, Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre (KSNDMC). “The present storage in Harangi, Hemavathi, KRS and Kabini reservoirs, from where water is supplied to Bengaluru, is around 21 tmc ft. The water storage has declined due to lack of rainfall in 2015. The reservoir levels have reached their lowest levels in the last 40 years,” Reddy said on Wednesday. Bengaluru needs at least 1.5 tmc ft of water every month and a total of about 3 tmc ft is pumped from these reservoirs to different places, including Mandya. However, a considerable quantity of the water in Kabini (6.87 tmc ft), Hemavathi (5 tmc ft), Harangi (1.5 tmc ft) and KRS (12.3 tmc ft) cannot be pumped due to two reasons: evaporation and dead storage level, he said. Reddy said the shortage was due to monsoon deficit in 2015. During the southwest monsoon, the State as a whole recorded 635 mm of rainfall as against the normal of 839 mm, which is a 22% deviation. An amount of 178 mm of rainfall was recorded during the Northeast monsoon as against the normal of 188 mm - about 5% deficit, he said. Only 9% of the total 3,598 minor irrigation tanks had storage of more than 50%, while others were going dry, he said. “The rainfall distribution in the State is highly erratic and even a small change in monsoon can lead to drought. Karnataka stands second only to Rajasthan in terms of the extent of arid and semi-arid areas. The State is highly vulnerable to drought as compared to its neighbouring states,” he said. Reddy said that about 80% of the geographical area is prone to drought in Karnataka. “Groundwater levels are depleting due to successive droughts and quality of water is getting deteriorated. The data suggests that 12 out of the last 15 years (2002-2014), one or the other part of Karnataka has faced severe drought,” he said.

Hottest Day in March 2016 for Bengaluru, at 37.4 Degrees Celsius

BENGALURU:  This could well be the cruellest March, going by mercury levels. Temperature data recorded by the Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Cell (KSNDMC) show that March this year has been the hottest so far, and the temperature of 37.4 degrees Celsius on Thursday (March 10) the hottest day ever recorded in the month for Bengaluru.

The previous highest temperature recorded for the month for the city was on March 29, 1996, at 37.3 degree celsius (IMD data). It was 38.7 degrees celsius for Bengaluru Rural district. According to KSNDMC, the temperatures are likely to go up before the end of March. The state is seeing a rise in temperature with February 2016 too recording the highest temperature for the month.

A relatively cooler place like Kodagu too is not exempt from the phenomenon. Highest temperature ever recorded in the district was on March 27, 1992, at 34.2 degrees celsius. The maximum temperature reading for Kodagu on March 10 this year, as per KSNDMC data, is 35.1 degrees. In Mysuru, highest temperature for March was on March 30, 1931 at 37.8 degrees. The March 10 reading for Mysuru is 39.2 degree celsius.

On March 10, 13 of the 30 districts in the state recorded a maximum temperature of over 40 degrees celsius, with Devarsugur Hobli in Raichur district logging a high 49.3.

Data Varies: Experts differ over whether highest temperatures were recorded this March or not. While B Puttanna, former IMD director, Bengaluru, said that though temperatures were close to the maximum, it did not exceed the readings of March 29, 1996. IMD’s recorded temperaure for March 10 is 35.2 for the city.   showers soon?:

However, G S Srinivasa Reddy, director of KSNDMC, said that the data collected was accurate as it had more weather stations than IMD. “Though KSNDMC does not have historical data, the only data available for comparison is IMD’s,” he said.

According to KSNDMC, the sultry conditions that had prevailed in the region will be relieved by light to moderate showers in South Interior Karnataka region. The showers are expected in the next four to five days. Though overcast conditions will prevail in North Interior Karnataka, a dry spell in the region is likely to continue. Parts of coastal, Malnad and South Interior Karnataka are expected to receive the showers, which will dip the temperatures by a degree or two. Overcast conditions are likely to have a similar effect on temperature in North Interior Karnataka region.
