Blink-and-miss spring? Summer seems to be here

The maximum temperature now is more than normal all across the state, said Srinivasa Reddy, Director, Karnataka State Natural Disaster Management Centre (KSNDMC)

BENGALURU: It’s only February, and summer seems to have already arrived in the state. The searing heat is becoming a talk of town not just in urban jungles like Bengaluru, since other districts of the state are also facing temperatures higher than normal for this time of year, registering an increase of 2-4°C. 
Bengaluru’s maximum temperature has already touched 34°C, and before the month ends, it is expected to break the previous record of 35.9°C that was registered in February 2005, according to India Meteorological Department (IMD).

Normally, it’s held to be winter season till February end, after which summer starts to set in. But this trend has changed over the past few years, and the winter period is getting shortened. This year, though a cold wave and fall in temperature was recorded during the winter months, the minimum temperature started increasing as soon February began, signalling early onset of summer. According to IMD, most districts in north Karnataka are feeling the heat, with temperatures touching 37°C in Kalaburagi and Ballari, 36°C in Mysuru and Gadag, and 35°C in Raichur.

The maximum temperature now is more than normal all across the state, said Srinivasa Reddy, Director, Karnataka State Natural Disaster Management Centre (KSNDMC). “There is three to four degree increase in north Karnataka, while southern districts are experiencing a rise of 2-3°C ,’’ he said. Talking about Bengaluru, he said the city recorded 35.9°C, which is an all-time high, in February 2005. “If we take the trend, during February, temperature has touched 35°C. But this time, it is likely to break the previous record,’’ he said, adding that with the surge in temperature, some places, including Bengaluru, may experience light to moderate rain.
It can be recalled that in the last two months, the minimum temperature in Bengaluru dipped to 7-10°C, which was said to be the lowest in the last decade. Bidar and Kalaburagi too recorded a low temperature of 6°C.

It’s 34°C already

Meteorological Department warns of hotter days ahead, above-normal temperatures in summer February is not yet over and the temperature in Bengaluru hit 34 degrees Celsius on Monday, according to India Meteorological Department (IMD). The weathermen say that the temperature is going to creep higher in the coming days. “The temperatures we have recorded over the last few days are above normal,” said officials from Meteorological department, confirming that summer is knocking on our doors.
SSM Gavaskar, a scientist from Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Center (KSNDMC), said that since Saturday, the temperature has been rising across Karnataka and beyond. Gavaskar said, “We are seeing above normal temperatures across the southern parts of the country, including in Bengaluru. On Monday, the day time temperature in Bengaluru climbed up to 33 degrees Celsius.”

“At night, the normal temperature now should be about 18 degree Celsius, but we have been seeing temperatures somewhere close to 19 to 20 degree Celsius. There is no wind either,” he added. Experts hold that the transition from winter to summer is usually hot. Gavaskar said, “But the temperature is on the higher side this time. We are seeing this pattern quite early, compared to previous years. However, year on year, this keeps changing and global warming is one of the several reasons behind this.” He also added that Bengaluru will probably experience above normal temperatures this summer too. Geetha Agnihotri, director of IMD Bengaluru said, “This time we are expecting higher temperatures in summer. The winter is almost gone and this time the temperature is a little higher for the time of the year. This kind of
heat is recorded only at the end of February.” As per the outlook for summer, she said, “Officially, summer starts from March 1, but this time, after February 15, we have recorded increased temperatures. This can be called the pre-monsoon

Spring showers likely this weekend in city

BENGALURU:  Pull out those raincoats and umbrellas this weekend. The Karnataka State Natural Disaster Management Centre (KSNDMC) expects showers on Saturday and Sunday, and predicts light to moderate rainfall in a few places in South Interior Karnataka, including Bengaluru and Malnad.

KSNDMC Director Srinivas Reddy said as the temperature is soaring, it is bound to rain. Weather forecast shows Bengaluru will have a maximum temperature of 320 Celsius on Friday, while it was 300 Celsius on Thursday. Weather experts expect the temperature to dip to 300 Celsius on Saturday, with scattered rain and thunderstorms, and 290 Celsius with scattered thunderstorms on Sunday.

“On Wednesday, it rained at a few places in Malnad. We are hoping it rains in South Interior Karnataka, including parts of Bengaluru. It will not be heavy rain, though,’’ he said. Reddy said winter continues, but is in a transition period (from winter to summer). “Normally, winter lasts till February-end. But since Wednesday, temperatures have risen.

There is cloud cover, which is the reason for the increase in temperature by 2-30 Celsius,’’ he said.  He explained that this was because of the formation of a trough, passing from Maldives to coastal Karnataka, which has also caused circulation above South Interior Karnataka.  In the first few days of January,  Bengaluru experienced minimum temperature of below 100  Celsius.  Reddy said that Bengaluru, which witnessed one of the coldest winters this time, is expected to have a harsh summer.

Feels like summer? Blame it on cyclonic circulation

Bengaluru: It seems the summer has already set in the city with day temperatures seeing a sudden rise over the last two days, and people complaining about the hot weather.

“Day temperatures have become very uncomfortable over the last two-three days,” said Vineeth, a college-goer. He said that last week, the weather was pleasant, but all of a sudden, days have become hot.

Temperature that was hovering around 27 degrees Celsius in the last week has shot up to over 31 degrees Celsius. The Indian Meteorological Department recorded the day temperature on Tuesday at 30 degrees Celsius. But on Wednesday it shot up to 31.1 degrees Celsius, making the city hote. But the summer is not here just yet.

Weathermen at the Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre attributed the change in the temperature to the cyclonic circulation over the south-interior Karnataka.

Mr S.S.M. Gavaskar, scientist at KSNDMC, said, “As per our observations, the weather is normal with one or two degree variation in the minimum temperatures. The cyclonic circulation over south-interior Karnataka is bringing in clouds and moist winds. Parts of Malnad and south-interior Karnataka are getting rain.”

The slight discomfort in weather will continue till Thursday and then ease out, he said, and added that the summer will set in only in March.
