Bengaluru, Apr 30, 2015Heavy rains coupled with strong winds and hailstorm that lashed the City on Thursday evening uprooted at least 50 trees and brought down many branches. Normal life in the Central Business District was paralysed due to the sudden change in the weather and heavy downpour.
Several cars and other vehicles were damaged in the incidents of tree fall. With trees and branches falling on electricity poles, power supply was disrupted in several areas, mainly Shanthinagar, Wilson Garden, Koramangala and Hanumanthanagar.
The BBMP Control Room received 80 complaints about trees and their branches crashing down. In Koramangala, branches of 12 trees fell on the road. However, there was no loss to the human life. Tree branches crashed at Jayanagar, Ulsoor, Shanthinagar, Basavanagudi, Wilson Garden, Sampangiram Nagar, MG Road boulevard, Lalbagh near Jayanagar Ashoka Pillar, Jagjeevan Ram Nagar, Chamarajpet, Siddaiah Road and Balakara Mandira.
On Lavelle Road, a huge tree crashed on a car causing severe damage to it. The owner of the car was fortunate as he was not inside. An autorickshaw was damaged after it came under a tree that crashed.
Bescom control room received 2,511 calls between 4 pm and 7 pm. The highest number of complaints (935) were from the South division. Nearly 200 electricity poles were uprooted/damaged in the City, the highest being 123 in the South division. There were not many complaints from the North division.
There was severe waterlogging at Chamarajpet and Chikpet areas where the stormwater drain have been encroached upon. Waterlogging was also reported near Urvashi cinema. In Koramangala, the stormwater drain was flowing to the brim. In Thurahalli slum, water gushed into the houses making people run for safety. Waterlogging on MG Road near the Mayo Hall damaged some vehicles.
