BENGALURU: This could well be the cruellest March, going by mercury levels. Temperature data recorded by the Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Cell (KSNDMC) show that March this year has been the hottest so far, and the temperature of 37.4 degrees Celsius on Thursday (March 10) the hottest day ever recorded in the month for Bengaluru.
The previous highest temperature recorded for the month for the city was on March 29, 1996, at 37.3 degree celsius (IMD data). It was 38.7 degrees celsius for Bengaluru Rural district. According to KSNDMC, the temperatures are likely to go up before the end of March. The state is seeing a rise in temperature with February 2016 too recording the highest temperature for the month.
A relatively cooler place like Kodagu too is not exempt from the phenomenon. Highest temperature ever recorded in the district was on March 27, 1992, at 34.2 degrees celsius. The maximum temperature reading for Kodagu on March 10 this year, as per KSNDMC data, is 35.1 degrees. In Mysuru, highest temperature for March was on March 30, 1931 at 37.8 degrees. The March 10 reading for Mysuru is 39.2 degree celsius.
On March 10, 13 of the 30 districts in the state recorded a maximum temperature of over 40 degrees celsius, with Devarsugur Hobli in Raichur district logging a high 49.3.
Data Varies: Experts differ over whether highest temperatures were recorded this March or not. While B Puttanna, former IMD director, Bengaluru, said that though temperatures were close to the maximum, it did not exceed the readings of March 29, 1996. However, G S Srinivasa Reddy, director of KSNDMC, said that the data collected was accurate as it had more weather stations than IMD. “Though KSNDMC does not have historical data, the only data available for comparison is IMD’s,” he said.
Showers Soon?
According to KSNDMC, the sultry conditions that had prevailed in the region will be relieved by light to moderate showers in South Interior Karnataka region. The showers are expected in the next four to five days. Though overcast conditions will prevail in North Interior Karnataka, a dry spell in the region is likely to continue. Parts of coastal, Malnad and South Interior Karnataka are expected to receive the showers, which will dip the temperatures by a degree or two. Overcast conditions are likely to have a similar effect on temperature in North Interior Karnataka region.
