BENGALURU: A team of techies at visual computing technology firm Viz Experts has collaborated with various state governments to help their civic bodies prepare for natural disasters.
Praveen Bhaniramka, co-founder of the Gurgaon-based startup, says that Karnataka and Bengaluru are mapped well but there is no way to put them into visualization and help civic agencies prepare for natural disasters such as flood and improve intra-agency coordination. For instance, how would you know if the house you want to buy is in a low-lying area or over a storm water drain. VizExperts extracts GIS-based data (rainfall, alerts on changing weather systems, warnings) and converts it into pictures, facilitating decision making by government agencies.
"Geospatial information is a key element in disaster management. We develop GIS solutions for quick deployment and adaptation in times of emergency . We can equip local, state or national government to deal with natural disasters such as earthquake, cyclone, flood, landslide, forest fires and drought," Bhaniramka says.

"It's high time for the city administration to use GIS-based data to reach decisions. If civic agencies identify issues and put the data in public domain, it will eventually benefit citizens. There BBMP has no provision to see data in visual format right now," he says.
As part of Digital Ocean, a nationallevel project, the company is now creat ing visualization maps with data on coastline of India in collaboration with the Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS)Hyderabad.
"Karnataka's coastline is also being mapped. We are extracting data on rainfall, tides and weather systems from the Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre (KSNDMC), weather department and National Disaster Management Authority , following which it will be collated to create visual representations to help authorities make decisions tools," Bhaniramka explains.
