Intense rainfall recorded in Sakleshpur

MYSORE, APRIL
13, 2014, DHNS:
Owing to the convective system,
Sakleshpur in Hassan district
received a rainfall of 50.5 mm on
Sunday. The intense rainfall
recorded in the region also
witnessed a hailstorm, resulting in
damages.
Several trees were uprooted and
electricity supply was affected
owing to the heavy downpour,
which lasted for about an hour.
Belur in the district too received
scattered rainfall of 24 mm during
the day. Parts of Alur and
Channarayapatna too recorded
isolated rainfall.
Kodagu district received scattered
rainfall during the day, with
Napoklu recording 25 mm rainfall
and Somwarpet 13 mm rainfall.
Isolated instances of rainfall was
also recorded at Nagamangala and
K R Pet in Mandya district and
Gundlupet and Chamarajanagar in
Chamarajanagar district.
Mysore district
However, Mysore did not receive
any rainfall during the day. With a
convective system in the region,
Kodagu and parts of Mysore
district are expected to receive
rainfall on Monday.

12 degree dip in temperature following rains in the region

Showers also reduce fears of forest
fires in Reserve forests
Rainfall in the last three days has
resulted in a four to 12 degree
Celsius dip in temperature in the
region, according to experts.
V S Prakash, Director of Karnataka
State Natural Disaster Monitoring
Committee said that the
temperatures which were 34 degree
Celsius during 2.30 pm on Friday
(April 11), was around 22 degree
Celsius on Saturday, in Mysore. He
said that said that rainfall in the
region was expected to continue
for the next two days.
"Rainfall during the past few days
has been concentrated in Southern
parts of Karnataka, owing to a
convective system which was
active in the Arabian Sea. The
system is now passing through
Kerala and Mysore region,
resulting in rainfall," he said.
While rainfall was fairly widespread
in Mysore district on Friday,
similar rainfall was recorded in
Chamarajanagar on Saturday. "The
forecast is that the rainfall will
continue in Mysore, Mandya,
Kodagu and Chamarajanagar in the
next two days.
Kodagu and parts of Mysore
district adjoining Kodagu might
receive fairly widespread rainfall
on Monday," he said. Convective
system, he said, was a regular
phenomenon during summer.
Prakash also said that 22 districts
received rainfall on Friday, with
Mysore recording the maximum
downpour.
Rain relief
With rainfall reported in various
parts of the region, Forest
department personnel have heaved
a sigh of relief. Parts of Bandipur
and Nagarahole National Parks
were recently ravaged by forest
fires, during which more than 1,500
acres of forests were gutted.
"With the region receiving rainfall
from the past few days, any fire
during the summer is unlikely," H
C Kantharaju, Director of Bandipur
Tiger Reserve said. "Rains usually
put an end to the fire problem," he
added. The rains have also
provided a temporary relief for
scarcity of water inside the
Reserve.
Forest department used to employ
two tractors to refill tanks inside
the National Park to provide water
in regions where there was no
water for animals. With the rains,
few tanks and crevices inside the
park have been filled, providing
ample water for animals inside the
park, said Kantharaju.
The reserve, which has 282 tanks
inside the limits, will not face any
shortage of water at least for the
next fortnight, he added.

Lightning kills three boys CHIKMAGALUR, APR 11, 2014,

Three boys were killed and four
suffered injuries when lightning
struck them in Giddenahalli at
Marle on Friday.
The dead are Lathish (14),
Basavaraju (12) and Prasanna (13).
The injured, Kiran, Mahendra,
Krishnamurthy and Ishwara, have
been admitted to a hospital.
The lightning struck a tree under
which the children were playing,
sources said. A coconut palm was
uprooted on Rathnagiri Road and
the pandals erected for BJP prime
ministerial candidate Narendra
Modi's election rally collapsed due
to heavy rain in Chikmagalur.

“Mango Showers” for next couple of days, cooling temperatures down

Sudden showers, accompanied by thunder and lightning, brought much-needed respite and comfort to the City that was sizzling under the scorching summer lately.  

That the City, according to Indian Meteorological Department officials, would witness “mango showers” for next couple of days, cooling temperatures down, was indeed like manna from heaven.  

Of course, the officials had a rider for the cool forecast. According to them, the City will have to brace up for the summer heat that will thereafter intensify. IMD Bangalore Director B Puttanna said Bangalore will receive heavy rainfall for next two days. This is because of the presence of upper air cyclonic circulation over Lakshadweep area which two days ago was extending from mean sea level upto 1.5 km above sea level is now above 1.5-3.5 km above sea level.  

Another factor was upper air trough across south Tamil Nadu which is also affecting south interior Karnataka and interior Tamil Nadu. These two systems are resulting in rainfall in coastal Karnataka and south interior Karnataka. “It is also possible Bangalore could experience hailstorms, coupled with squally winds and thunder showers. These showers are common in April and improve the harvest for mangoes,” he added. The two hours of rainfall reduced air temperature by 10 degree Celsius. 

City recorded 9.2 mm rainfall, Yelahanka recorded 35.2 mm rainfall and HAL airport recorded 1.8 mm of rainfall. The City temperature also dipped. Wind speed was recorded at 34 kmph. City maximum was 33.8 degrees Celsius and minimum was 22.4 degrees Celsius. On Tuesday, maximum temperature in the City was 36.8 degrees Celsius.
