Rains turn layouts into islands in Raichur

Heavy rainfall since early Saturday morning in Raichur city brought life to a standstill. Several low-lying areas, main roads, market and other places in the City were inundated.

Water gushed into the houses at Basavanabhavi Chowk and the roads in this locality were also inundated, thereby reducing the place into an island. With most parts of the City being water-logged, the Ganj Road is hardly visible. Motorists, pedestrians and schoolchildren faced a tough time to reach their destinations. Residents vented their anger at the district administration and the City Municipal Council (CMC), on their failure to prevent water-logging.

The deputy commissioner had instructed the CMCin-charge commissioner to take measures on a war-footing to ensure smooth flow of water. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, Opposition Leader Jagadish Shettar, former chief ministers B SYeddyurappa and H D Kumaraswamy had visited Raichur recently to inspect rain-affected places. Yeramaras recorded 36 mm of rainfall, Raichur city recorded 31.4 mm and Hedaginal in Sindhanur taluk recorded 35.2 mm.

25 houses damaged

Rains pounded Talikote in Bijapur district from Friday evening to Saturday morning. More than 25 houses were reported to be damaged in Talikote town and more than 100 acres of fields in the rural areas were inundated. The town and the rural areas have received about nine hours of continuous rainfall, with River Doni in spate.

The bridge over Hadaginal Road is submerged and Janaki pond is in spate. The Bijapur Road was inundated, hindering movement of vehicles. The SK Pre-University College and MGMK Primary School have turned into islands. The compound wall of Milat Nagar Government High School collapsed, with the entire premises being water-logged.
