City gets its first pre-monsoon showers

Bengaluru: April 2, 2015:DHNS

Bengaluru experienced its first pre-monsoon showers of the season on Tuesday night and Wednesday evening, which the Indian Meteorological Department said would continue for the next 3-4 days.

While the showers brought much respite from the rising summer heat, they also created problems for commuters who were left stranded at traffic signals, leading to snail-paced movement of vehicles in most parts of the City. Some of the areas affected were MG Road, KR Road, Sankey Road, Shivananda Circle, Bannerghatta Road, Magadi Road, Double Road and surrounding areas.

Speaking to Deccan Herald, IMD Bengaluru director Sunder Mahadev Metri said there was an upper air cyclonic circulation prevailing over Lakshadweep and surrounding areas.

There is also an upper air trough from Madhya Pradesh till north interior Karnataka. Under the influence of these two systems, Bengaluru and its surrounding areas are experiencing light to moderate rainfall. This will continue for 3-4 days, but if the systems become stronger or prevail longer, then the rainfall duration will increase.

Drop in temperatures
Under these systems, there will be a drop in temperatures, followed by presence of cloud cover and cooling winds. These are the pre-monsoon showers and not mango showers, he added.

The City on Tuesday night received 1.2mm and the international airport recorded 1mm rainfall.

But the HAL airport did not receive any rainfall. On Wednesday evening, till 5.30 pm, the City and the international airport recorded no rainfall, but HAL recorded rainfall in trace (below 0.1mm).
