Another depression forms over Bay of Bengal; rains to continue
G.S. Srinivasa Reddy said that the chances of depression intensifying and turning into a cyclone were high
Rains will continue to lash south interior Karnataka for a few more days as one more depression is forming near the Sri Lankan coast in the Bay of Bengal, which is likely to strengthen between Kerala and Lakshadweep and turn into a cyclone, the Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre (KSNDMC) said.
G.S. Srinivasa Reddy, director of KSNDMC, said that based on the forecast for the past three days, the chances of depression intensifying and turning into a cyclone were high.
“One more depression is being formed near the Sri Lankan coast in the Bay of Bengal. It is likely to become a low pressure area and set to become strong. It is likely to enter the Arabian sea through the Kerala tip.”
Areas in Karnataka adjoining Tamil Nadu and Kerala are likely to receive rain, but north interior Karnataka will not be affected much, officials said.
Northeast monsoon till Dec.
“South interior Karnataka will receive fairly widespread rainfall for three to four days from October 31,” Mr. Reddy said, adding that the northeast monsoon was also active right now. “Northeast monsoon delved into south India soon after the southwest monsoon withdrew and is expected to continue till December,” he said.
Meanwhile, C.S. Patil, Director of India Meteorological Department (IMD), said the intensity of Cyclone Kyaar, the present super cyclone, has started to weaken. As a result, south interior Karnataka and north interior Karnataka would “likely receive light to moderate rainfall” on Tuesday and Wednesday.
“As Cyclone Kyaar has continued moving towards Oman Coast, the intensity of rainfall in Karnataka and adjoining parts of south India has started weakening resulting in less rain,” he said.
Many parts of north Karnataka, south Karnataka and Malnad regions witnessed moderate rainfall, and coastal Karnataka have received heavy rains for the past four days.
