You can soon get flood alerts on phone

BENGALURU: Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre (KSNDMC) in association with Indian Institute of Science and IITs is developing ‘Urban Climate’, a hi-tech climate monitoring system that will give people real time data about rains and floods. Once the system, that is likely to be put in place in Bengaluru and other major cities within next three months, is operational, people can get information on their mobile phones and also through public display boards.

Scientists from US-based Purdue University are associated with the mega project which is funded by the Science and Technology Ministry.According to Srinivas Reddy, KSNDMC Director, they are developing sensors that will be put inside storm water drains. “With the help of water level in the drains, sensors will alert people residing in and around on flooding updates. We have been entrusted comprehensive development of technology exclusively for Bengaluru that will enable anybody to get data on any change in climate at their finger tips. This includes rain or cloud, flooding , thunder to lightning and many more,” he added.

“At present KSNDMC has 100 rain gauging equipment across Bengaluru. Now, we are focusing on high resolution technology that will give more accurate updates. Sometimes, we forecast heavy rain but that day it might not rain. With hi-tech and high resolution equipment, we will get a better picture,’’ he said.
Pointing out to the existing flood-prone areas, the director said they have identified 174 locations. “This was done based on 10m water level from ground. We now have an advanced technology which can give us data on flooding even if the waer level is only 2m,’’ he said.

The centre is also developing a mobile application to alert flooding to road users. “Like Ola and Uber, this mobile app will be GPS enabled. Like traffic alerts one can also see flooding alerts on the map. This will give alternative safer routes to the users,’’ Reddy said.About thunder and lightning, he said that sensors to alert that is also being developed.

Explaining further, Reddy said they are going to develop and implement the idea in Bengaluru and later another nine cities that are flood prone will be included. This includes Chennai, Mumbai, Hyderbad, Kolkata, Delhi, Surat and other major cities. “The real time update can also be put on the electronic board that can be installed in crowded area like bus station, railway station and market,’’ he said.

KARNATAKA IS DROUGHT-FREE

KARNATAKA IS DROUGHT-FREE

After its wettest monsoon, state to revise list of drought-affected districts

The year 2017 has been a happy one for Karnataka, which has been reeling under severe drought since 2011 and passing through the worst climatic phase in its history. Bounteous rains across the state spanning two months have helped the state get rid of the dubious distinction that it was a drought-prone state.

Official data released by the Revenue Department on Wednesday proved that Karnataka is free of drought.

Rainfall data prepared by the Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre (KSNDMC) and provided by the Revenue Department, says Karnataka witnessed 8 per cent deficit rainfall till September -end, which according to the Centre's guidelines on drought is normal rainfall season.

Interestingly, it is only Southern Karnataka that has received excess rainfall while all other climatological zones of Karnataka have received deficient rainfall.

Revenue Minister Kagodu Thimmappa told media persons, "South Interior Karnataka has received 27 per cent excess rainfall while all other regions have witnessed deficit rainfall. However, the overall situation appears promising as the entire state has received good rains compared to previous years. There is hope that there will not be any problem of potable water supply this summer."

Based on the rainfall data provided by KSNDMC, the cabinet sub-committee on drought assessment will meet next week and revise the drought-affected taluks.

Among the 11 districts of South Karnataka, Mandya, has witnessed the highest excess rainfall of 67 per cent followed by Chamarajanagar at 47% and Bengaluru Urban with 45% excess rainfall.

Clouds from South West reluctant to

As it is the time for the South West monsoons to withdraw, Bengaluru was hoping for some rainless days. However, the Met department has said that the withdrawal of the South West Monsoons have been delayed and it will be over only in the third week of October.

Met officials in the city said the South West monsoons have a state record of -8 percent as on date and is considered normal. Met statistics say, +19 to -19 is a normal record and it still persists within the range. Srinivas Reddy, Director, Karnataka State Natural Disaster Management Centre (KSNDMC) told BM, "The South West monsoon will continue till the third week of October. Usually this monsoon is over by October 15. This is because of the change in the pattern and the trough created last month." The Met department has predicted rainfall in North Interior Karnataka and South Interior Karnataka. In South Interior Karnataka rainfall is expected to continue for the next two to three days.Met department also said North East monsoon will pick up as soon as the South West monsoon withdraws.

40 mm of rain leaves Bengaluru localities flooded

BENGALURU: For the umpteenth time this season, much of Bengaluru was laid low by about 40-50 mm of rain on Thursday. It started at noon, with overcast conditions over south interior Karnataka triggering a thunderstorm over the city.

S S M Gavaskar, a scientist in the Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Cell (KSNDMC) said more rain was forecast for Friday.

Low-lying areas such as HSR Layout and Koramangala were inundated in a trice and traffic along major roads was affected due to waterlogging.

The Bengaluru traffic police put out advisories indicating traffic snarls during peak hours. As per the Twitter handle of the traffic police, waterlogging occurred at Kamaraj Road, Manyata Tech Park, Nehru Circlea and Electronic City, causing traffic congestion in most of these places. A BMTC bus was almost submerged near PES College in Electronic City.

Reports of water entering homes were received by the BBMP control room from HSR Layout, while trees fell in BTM Layout, Koramangala, Vasant Nagar and the Whitefield Road towards Hoodi. Sector 6 of HSR Layout continued to get badly inundated, in spite of visits to the area earlier by MP Ananth Kumar and MLA Satish Reddy.
