Rain, lightning claim 10 lives

Heavy rain coupled with gusty
winds and lightning claimed 10
lives across the State on Saturday.
Parts of North Karnataka recorded
more deaths due to lightning.
Rains accompanied by hailstorm
and stormy winds destroyed
standing crops on vast tracts of
land in Chitradurga district.
Kanumappa (25) of Maradihatti
village in Hiriyur taluk and
Hogappa (45) of Menasinadu
Gollarahatti village in Hosadurga
taluk were struck dead by lightning
while Ajjaiah (14) was injured in
Chikkandavadi village of
Hosadurga taluk. Deputy
Commissioner has announced an
ex gratia of Rs 1.5 lakh to the
families of each of the deceased.
Strong winds and heavy downpour
have wreaked havoc in Davangere
district. Rainwater gushed into
houses in the low-lying areas.
Heavy winds blew away cement
sheet-roof of several houses.
Power supply was disrupted in
several areas as electricity poles
were uprooted. Shivappa (51) was
killed by lightning in Daggi
Basapur village of Harapanahalli
taluk. The incident occurred while
he was working in his farmland.
Several livestock were killed in
Jagalur and Harihar taluks.
Hailstorm and heavy rain pounded
parts of Kudligi taluk in Bellary
district on Saturday evening.
Lightning struck M R 
Hanumanthappa, a shepherd who
had taken shelter beneath a tree in
Malur village. He died on his way
to the hospital. Four persons and
seven oxen were injured due to
lightning elsewhere in the taluk.
North Karnataka
A 45-year-old farmer was struck
dead by lightning in at Koganur
village in Lakshmeshwara taluk of
Gadag district. The deceased has
been identified as Babusab Dawal
Sab Chouri (45). Ravi Shivappa
Megalamni and Chennappa
Bijjappa Vokkalada sustained
injuries in the incident. All the
three were working in the fields
when the incident occurred.
Annappa Hirebadagi (14) was
killed by lightning in Hunagundi
village of Ron taluk. Six large
haystacks were reduced to ashes
in the incident.
A 15-year-old shepherd was killed
by lightning in Navalgund of
Dharwad district. The deceased
has been identified as Srikanth
Shekhappa Lamani (15).
Kotappa Gouda Sharana Gouda
Biradara (31), who was riding
pillion on a two-wheeler was
struck dead by lightning near
Talikote in Bijapur district. He was
returning home on a bike along
with his two friends.
Tree branch crashes on car
Two persons were killed and four
sustained grievous injuries after a
tree branch fell of a car near
Rudranahalli Gate in Arasikere
taluk of Hassan district.
The deceased have been identified
as Lokesh (35) and his friend (30),
both residents of Somanahalli in
Mandya district.
According to police, they were
returning to Maddur after a visit to
Sigandhureshwari temple in Sagar
taluk of Shimoga district.
Narayanappa, his wife Sowbhagya,
son Ullas and son-in-law
Prathima, who were in the car,
have been admitted to government
hospital in Arasikere.
Shimoga Heavy rainfall
accompanied by thunder, lightning
and strong winds lashed various
parts of Shimoga district on
Saturday evening.
According to sources, Shikaripur
witnessed heavy rainfall for hours.
Low-lying areas in the town were
waterlogged. Power supply was
disrupted as tree branches fell on
electric wires. Sagar and Shimoga
witnessed moderate rain
accompanied by thunder, lightning
and strong wind.

Temperatures likely to soar in the next three days

After a brief relief for the residents of
the city, following the few spells of
rain last week, the temperature is
likely to rise again in the next few
days.
No respite
B. Puttanna, Director-in-charge of
the Indian Metrological Department,
Bangalore, said that the temperature
was likely to be around 36 degrees
Celsius in the next three days.
“There will be no rainfall, as the
weather system causing the rain has
moved east,” he said.
Meanwhile, as per the department’s
weather bulletin, the maximum
temperature on Sunday stood at 35.5
degrees Celsius while the minimum
was 23.4 degrees.
Slight increase
There was a slight increase in
maximum temperature, which on
Saturday was 35 degrees Celsius.
However, the minimum temperature
remains static.
In April last year, the highest
maximum temperature recorded was
36.8 degrees Celsius, while the
lowest minimum temperature was
20.7 degrees Celsius.

Excess pre-monsoon showers in 23 dists

Bangalore Urban, Kolar and Udupi
districts have not been lucky
enough to get the normal pre-
monsoon showers from March 1 till
Saturday.
Elsewhere, lightning, which is a
typical phenomenon during the
pre-monsoon period, has left 28
persons and 75 cattle dead. The
highest deaths due to lightning
has been in Tumkur (six), followed
by Gadag where five persons have
died. In the last three days alone,
13 persons have died, according to
statistics furnished by the Revenue
department on Saturday.
Udupi district is the only one
among the three coastal districts
to receive scanty rain, said B
Puttanna, director of the Indian
Meteorological Department (IMD),
Bangalore. The deficit was 69 per
cent in the district.
North Karnataka, Interior Karnataka
and South Karnataka have received
normal to excess pre-monsoon
showers from April 16 till date.
Among the 30 districts, Kodagu,
Mysore, Chikkaballapur and
Bangalore Rural have received
normal showers, while three
districts - Bangalore Urban, Kolar
and Udupi - below normal to
scanty. The rest of the 23 districts
have received excess rains, the
director said.
The State, on the whole, has
received 42.6 mm rain, while the
average this season is 24.3 mm.
This means that the State has
received 75 per cent more than the
average rain.
In case of North Interior Karnataka,
comprising 11 districts including
Bagalkot, Bijapur, Gadag and

Karnataka have witnessed 60 per
cent more rain than the average of
30 mm.
Puttanna said deaths due to
lightning are not rare during the
pre-monsoon period. "About 100
deaths due to lightning is a
common thing. The weather bureau
issues repeated warnings to
people not to stand beneath trees
or buildings which have no
earthing facility. But still, they
continue to do this,” he said.
He said, but for the ongoing Lok
Sabha elections, the IMD would
have announced the monsoon
forecast for this year by April 16.
Usually monsoon enters Karnataka
by June 5, and Bangalore receives
its highest rainfall from September
to October.
"The summer is normal and in
some districts, it is severe. So, we
can expect a normal monsoon in
the State,” the director said.
Tumkur Deputy Commissioner K S
Sathyamurthy said that the
election model code of conduct,
which is in force, did not come in
the way of payment of ex gratia to
the legal heirs of those who have
died due to lightning.
"The ex gratia fixed for the loss of
human life is Rs 1.5 lakh and to
the owners of cattle that die, it is
Rs 25,000,” he said.

Lightning Kills Two in Raichur District...

Two died after lightning struck them in two different incidents on Friday evening.

Sidramappa (19) died after lightning struck amid rains in Upral Godihal village near here on Friday evening. He was returning home with his mother and brother after work.

His mother and brother sustained injuries and have been admitted to the district hospital.Hanumanthappa (55) died when lightning struck him on the outskirts of Uskihal village in Lingsugur taluk on Friday evening. He was returning home after grazing sheep in the fields. Mudgal police have registered a case. Two others were seriously injured after lightning struck at Bedarkarlakunti village near Maski. Annapurna and Basamma have been admitted to the hospital. Both are said to be in an unconscious state.

Rain Wreaks Havoc in C’durga District

Chitradurga: Several plantain farms were destroyed, sheep were killed and houses damaged due to heavy rains accompanied by lightning at Challakere and surrounding areas on Friday night.

MLA T Raghu Murthy, who visited the spot promised to offer compensation for the damages soon after the model code of conduct is lifted. At Sanikere village rain accompanied by wind destroyed plantain and papaya grove belonging to one Rangaswamy. The villages was plunged into dark after the rain fell electricity poles.In several villages sheep were killed by the lightning.

Girl Injured in              Wall Collapse

Belgaum:  A minor girl was seriously injured after a compound wall of a floor mill collapsed at Vaibhav Nagar in the city on Saturday.

The girl has been identified as Priyanka Yallappa Hanchal (8), a resident of New Vibhav Nagar. She was immediately rushed to the district hospital and later to a private hospital for treatment to her head injuries. She is said to be out of danger.

 According to police, the girl was playing near the over the 10-foot high compound wall when the mishap occurred. The rain soaked-wall crashed down. The people nearby rushed to the spot, rescued the girl stuck in the debris and rushed her to the hospital.

20th April 2014:::Showers Predicted Across State

Thundershowers may soon bring down mid-summer temperatures in parts of the state.

According to the Indian Meteorological Department, thundershowers are likely to occur in the next three days in some parts including south interior, north and costal Karnataka.

In the last two days, thundershowers and moderate rainfall was recorded in Hallimysore, Banavasi, Londa, Bharamasagara, Hubli, Savanur, Shiralkoppa, Arasikere, Kiravatti, Belgaum, Byadgi, Tavaragere, Badami, Harangi, Kushalanagara, Linganamakki, Shikaripura, Sakaleshpura and Magadi.

In Bangalore, Sunday is likely to be partly cloudy, with scattered rain and thundershowers. The maximum temperature in the city is forecast at 35 degrees Celsius, with humidity of 30 per cent. The minimum temperature will be around 21 degrees Celsius.

The temperature is likely to dip slightly on Monday and Tuesday, Met sources said.

It rains in City, but no dip in mercury...

Bangalore, April 18, 2014, DHNS:

After bright sunshine on Thursday, many parts of Bangalore received rainfall on Friday. But the showers did not reduce the rising mercury levels. 
In fact, the maximum temperature in the City on Friday was 35.4 degrees Celsius, more than the 34.6 degrees Celsius recorded on Thursday. 

More rainfall is expected in the City and all over Karnataka in the next three days because of an upper air trough from central Maharashtra to southern Tamil Nadu and across interior Karnataka and Tamil Nadu extending up to 1.5 km above sea level, according to the director of Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), B Puttanna. 

On Thursday, it was 0.9 km above sea level. This will continue for the next few days and Bangalore will receive rainfall along with squally wind. 

While the IMD radars did not record any rainfall till 5.30 pm, many areas of Bangalore — especially in southern and western parts — received rainfall. 

Heavy rain ahead

The City has received 14.6 mm rainfall since April 1, 2014, against the total normal amount of 44 mm. But in the last two years, 13 and 12 mm of rainfall had been recorded respectively. 

Puttanna, however, said heavy rainfall was expected in April as temperature patterns would fluctuate. 

He further said the rise in temperature in Bangalore on Friday was because cloud formation occurred only in the afternoon but until then the temperature had already increased. But once rainfall occurs, temperature will drop. Wind pattern will also get affected. 

Also, for the first time, temperature dropped in north Karnataka. Gulbarga recorded a drop of six degrees Celsius on Friday. The maximum temperature in Gulbarga was 34 degrees Celsius while it was 39 degrees Celsius in Raichur.

district on Wednesday. The rain
brought a relief to the citizens
from scorching sun.

Rain damage
Two houses were damaged
when a lightning struck it at
Samse village in N R Pura taluk
on Tuesday night. Television
set, refrigerator and cup board
were damaged in the house of
Abraham in Samse due to
lightning.
His wife Susamma has received
mild shock. She was also
injured as a lamp fell on her and
has been admitted to the
hospital. Over 200 packs of dry
grass were burnt and metre
board has been completely
damaged.
Speaking to Deccan Herald,
Abraham said that five members
of the family were fast asleep on
Tuesday night, when the
lightning struck the house. "I do
not know what happened as I
fell unconscious. When I woke
up, my neighbour took my
injured wife to the hospital. I
have incurred a loss of around
Rs 1.5 lakh,” he said.
A commercial complex near
Abraham’s house too was
damaged, incurring a loss of Rs
one lakh.
Shanivarasanthe
Shanivarasanthe received heavy
rain on Tuesday night. The
drains were filled with water.
The rain brought smile on the
face of coffee growers.

Rain, lightning claim 7 lives

Rain and thundershowers in
several parts of Karnataka claimed
seven lives on Monday. While five
died of lightning, two were
electrocuted after they came in
contact with a live wire in Tumkur
and Davangere districts.
Lightning struck Jayanna (45) of
Rangapura in Sira taluk of Tumkur
district while he was offering puja
under a neem tree in the village.
He died on the spot. Several
devotees injured in the incident
have been admitted to the
government hospital.
Similarly, Veeresh (20) was killed
in Hosahalli village while he was
performing a ritual. Veeresh hailed
from Hiriyur taluk in Chitradurga
district. Puttamma (65), a resident
of Hulikunte was killed by
lightning while she was answering
the call of nature.
A woman and her son were
electrocuted in Halkurike village of
Tiptur taluk. The deceased have
been identified as Gangamma (60)
and Veerabhadraiah (38).
A banana plant had fallen on an
electricity pole due to gusty winds
and Veerabhadraiah suffered
electric shock when he went to lift
the plant. His mother, who went to
his rescue was also electrocuted.
Gowramma, their neighbour, was
injured when she went to the
rescue of the two.
A couple had a miraculous escape
in Marenadu village of Huliyar after
their shanty caught fire due to
lightning. However, 10 sheep and
household articles were destroyed
in the blaze.
In Davangere
Two persons died on the spot
when lightning struck them in
Harapanahalli taluk of Davangere
district on Monday.
The deceased, identified as
Shirahatti Ravi (24 ) and his
relative Manjunath (14), were
working in their farm when the
incident occurred. Rains
accompanied by strong winds
uprooted several trees and
electricity poles in parts of the
district. The neighbouring
Chitradurga district also received
rains.
84 mm rain in Somwarpet
Several parts of Mysore region on
Monday received widespread pre-
monsoon showers.Very heavy
rainfall was recorded in Kodagu
district, with parts of Somwarpet
receiving 84 mm of rainfall since
afternoon. Other parts of the
district too received rains, with
parts of Madikeri and Virajpet,
recording 52 mm and 40 mm of rain
respectively.
In Hassan, two persons were
injured and damage to property
was reported following rain
accompanied by thunderstorms.
Meteorological Department has
forecast widespread rains in
Malnad, coastal and South interior
Karnataka till the end of this week

Intense rainfall recorded in Sakleshpur

MYSORE, APRIL
13, 2014, DHNS:
Owing to the convective system,
Sakleshpur in Hassan district
received a rainfall of 50.5 mm on
Sunday. The intense rainfall
recorded in the region also
witnessed a hailstorm, resulting in
damages.
Several trees were uprooted and
electricity supply was affected
owing to the heavy downpour,
which lasted for about an hour.
Belur in the district too received
scattered rainfall of 24 mm during
the day. Parts of Alur and
Channarayapatna too recorded
isolated rainfall.
Kodagu district received scattered
rainfall during the day, with
Napoklu recording 25 mm rainfall
and Somwarpet 13 mm rainfall.
Isolated instances of rainfall was
also recorded at Nagamangala and
K R Pet in Mandya district and
Gundlupet and Chamarajanagar in
Chamarajanagar district.
Mysore district
However, Mysore did not receive
any rainfall during the day. With a
convective system in the region,
Kodagu and parts of Mysore
district are expected to receive
rainfall on Monday.

12 degree dip in temperature following rains in the region

Rainfall in the last three days has
resulted in a four to 12 degree
Celsius dip in temperature in the
region, according to experts.
V S Prakash, Director of Karnataka
State Natural Disaster Monitoring
Committee said that the
temperatures which were 34 degree
Celsius during 2.30 pm on Friday
(April 11), was around 22 degree
Celsius on Saturday, in Mysore. He
said that said that rainfall in the
region was expected to continue
for the next two days.
"Rainfall during the past few days
has been concentrated in Southern
parts of Karnataka, owing to a
convective system which was
active in the Arabian Sea. The
system is now passing through
Kerala and Mysore region,
resulting in rainfall," he said.
While rainfall was fairly widespread
in Mysore district on Friday,
similar rainfall was recorded in
Chamarajanagar on Saturday. "The
forecast is that the rainfall will
continue in Mysore, Mandya,
Kodagu and Chamarajanagar in the
next two days.
Kodagu and parts of Mysore
district adjoining Kodagu might
receive fairly widespread rainfall
on Monday," he said. Convective
system, he said, was a regular
phenomenon during summer.
Prakash also said that 22 districts
received rainfall on Friday, with
Mysore recording the maximum
downpour.
Rain relief
With rainfall reported in various
parts of the region, Forest
department personnel have heaved
a sigh of relief. Parts of Bandipur
and Nagarahole National Parks
were recently ravaged by forest
fires, during which more than 1,500
acres of forests were gutted.
"With the region receiving rainfall
from the past few days, any fire
during the summer is unlikely," H
C Kantharaju, Director of Bandipur
Tiger Reserve said. "Rains usually
put an end to the fire problem," he
added. The rains have also
provided a temporary relief for
scarcity of water inside the
Reserve.
Forest department used to employ
two tractors to refill tanks inside
the National Park to provide water
in regions where there was no
water for animals. With the rains,
few tanks and crevices inside the
park have been filled, providing
ample water for animals inside the
park, said Kantharaju.
The reserve, which has 282 tanks
inside the limits, will not face any
shortage of water at least for the
next fortnight, he added.

Lightning kills three boys CHIKMAGALUR, APR 11, 2014,

Three boys were killed and four
suffered injuries when lightning
struck them in Giddenahalli at
Marle on Friday.
The dead are Lathish (14),
Basavaraju (12) and Prasanna (13).
The injured, Kiran, Mahendra,
Krishnamurthy and Ishwara, have
been admitted to a hospital.
The lightning struck a tree under
which the children were playing,
sources said. A coconut palm was
uprooted on Rathnagiri Road and
the pandals erected for BJP prime
ministerial candidate Narendra
Modi's election rally collapsed due
to heavy rain in Chikmagalur.

“Mango Showers” for next couple of days, cooling temperatures down

Sudden showers, accompanied by thunder and lightning, brought much-needed respite and comfort to the City that was sizzling under the scorching summer lately.  

That the City, according to Indian Meteorological Department officials, would witness “mango showers” for next couple of days, cooling temperatures down, was indeed like manna from heaven.  

Of course, the officials had a rider for the cool forecast. According to them, the City will have to brace up for the summer heat that will thereafter intensify. IMD Bangalore Director B Puttanna said Bangalore will receive heavy rainfall for next two days. This is because of the presence of upper air cyclonic circulation over Lakshadweep area which two days ago was extending from mean sea level upto 1.5 km above sea level is now above 1.5-3.5 km above sea level.  

Another factor was upper air trough across south Tamil Nadu which is also affecting south interior Karnataka and interior Tamil Nadu. These two systems are resulting in rainfall in coastal Karnataka and south interior Karnataka. “It is also possible Bangalore could experience hailstorms, coupled with squally winds and thunder showers. These showers are common in April and improve the harvest for mangoes,” he added. The two hours of rainfall reduced air temperature by 10 degree Celsius. 

City recorded 9.2 mm rainfall, Yelahanka recorded 35.2 mm rainfall and HAL airport recorded 1.8 mm of rainfall. The City temperature also dipped. Wind speed was recorded at 34 kmph. City maximum was 33.8 degrees Celsius and minimum was 22.4 degrees Celsius. On Tuesday, maximum temperature in the City was 36.8 degrees Celsius.
