Report on flooding in Mangaluru (Dakshina Kannada) and Udupi due to high intensity rain #May2018
“According to weather forecasts, the monsoon was predicted from June 1st. We have been preparing for the monsoon since last month and had kept the entire team on standby. But the onset of monsoon began earlier than expected on May 28 late night, and it converted to a low-pressure system. We did not get the time to give out warnings. In the monsoon season, low pressure is normal and we generally get 150 mm of rain. In Mangaluru, we have faced such situations and there was no major concern about it. But very strangely that low pressure had entirely precipitated. On May 28 night, precipitation occurred throughout the taluks of Mangaluru and Udupi within a short period of time causing 368 mm of rainfall in six hours in these places,” said Deputy Commissioner Sasikanth Senthil in a press meet held at his office here on May 30.
Addressing the mediapersons, DC Senthil said that since there was a high tide during the same time as the rains, the major storm water drains that open to the Gurupur and Netravati systems had reverse flow. “Both the drains were facing high tide conditions. When there is a high tide, backwater from the river flows into the canals of the city. Due to this, it was not possible to drain the rainwater, causing water stagnation throughout the areas in the city. Once we found that the water had been stagnated, we immediately deployed all the teams and took necessary measures. A control room was established and was used to monitor the entire district since there was heavy rainfall in the district. We were prepared for the monsoon and immediately responded to the situation. We were well aware that after 6 pm, the situation would settle down since there would be a low tide and the water would recede. Everything returned to normalcy with no more rains or signs of a cyclone,” said the DC adding that a holiday was immediately announced for schools and colleges. The rains caused damage to property and resulted in the loss of two lives – Mohini, who was buried under a retaining wall and Mukta Bai, who toppled from the bed and died.
The DC further said that a team had been formed and it was headed by a nodal officer to monitor the situation throughout the night. Preliminary assessment and categorization was already conducted for the public and private property. According to the estimates, the rains caused Rs 16 crores of financial loss in infrastructure damages and Rs 4.11 crore for house damages. The total estimated loss is nearly Rs 20 crores
“We are giving ex gratia when such incidents occur. Today, we have handed over two cheques to two families. In the district, 35 houses were fully damaged, 42 houses were severely damaged and 483 houses had marginal damages. We will hand over the relief according to NDRF norms. There is no need to panic. For safety purposes, we have summoned an NDRF team and they have been stationed in Mangaluru. Life has become normal in Mangaluru and we do not have any prediction of bad weather. Certain roads and pathways will have to restored and will be done in a day or two. In three areas, we need to get rid of stagnated water. I have visited some places and have inspected them. I have noticed that in certain areas, corrections are required,” DC added. DC further said that he has formed a committee headed by the MUDA commissioner, consisting of a team of engineers and a team of other domain experts to inspect all the major stormwater drains. The team has been given three days to check the water drains, from Kottara Chowki to Gurupur system and Jeppu to Netravati system. “If there is any encroachment along these areas, they will be reported. In three days, we will receive the report and intervene accordingly. If there is any bottleneck or encroachment, they will be removed immediately,” warned DC Senthil. ADC Vaishali and DHO Dr Ramakrishna were also present.

Expect monsoon to reach in Karnataka latest by June 2
Despite a slight delay, the onset of South West Monsoon in Karnataka is expected by the end of May or the first couple of days in the month of June.
Published: 24th May 2018 03:12 AM
BENGALURU: Despite a slight delay, the onset of South West Monsoon in Karnataka is expected by the end of May or the first couple of days in the month of June. The monsoon, which is said to be strong in nature, is expected to add joy to the farmers who have been helped by a good spell of pre-monsoon of mango showers in the State.
G S Srinivas Reddy, Director, Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Cell (KSNDMC), told The New Indian Express that monsoons are likely to arrive in Karnataka on May 29- the day when monsoon onset is expected in Kerala, or a day later on May 30. “However, due to a severe cyclonic storm in Arabian Sea, the onset could be delayed by a day or two. All conditions are suitable for the onset of monsoons,” he said. The severe cyclonic storm, which is moving away from the West Coast of India towards Oman, will have no impact on monsoon, he said.
To a question, he said that the conditions witnessed during the onset of monsoon last year were unlikely to be repeated. “Last year, we had a seven-day delay as the monsoon took a lot of time to advance Northwards after reaching Kerala. Compared to the monsoon conditions last year, it is stronger this year and is expected to reach Karnataka in the first few days of June itself,” he said.
Best pre-monsoon season
Data also indicates that Karnataka has had the best pre-monsoon season in the past six years at least. According to KSNDMC, the State has received around 39 per cent excess rainfall in the season, as of May 23. While the State receives an average of 101.6 mm rainfall between March 1 and May 23, it has received 140.87 mm till date.
Between 2013 and 2017, highest pre-monsoon was recorded in 2014. Coastal Karnataka has received 186 mm against a normal of 114.5 mm as of May 23- an excess of 62 per cent during the ongoing season.Malnad and South Interior Karnataka have received 48 per cent excess and North Interior Karnataka districts have received about 16 per cent excess.

Rain saves forests from fire this summer
BENGALURU: Copious pre-monsoon rain has reduced the risk of forest fires in the state this summer. In the past two months, Karnataka has seen no major incident, according to the forest department.
Though areas in Nagarahole Tiger Reserve, Madikeri and Turahalli near Bengaluru witnessed small fires in March, the state has been receiving rainfall at regular intervals April onwards. Bandipur, where fires have ravaged large swathes of forests in the past, hasn’t seen an incident this time.
Senior forest officer Manoj Kumar said nature has favoured forests this season.
“April-May is the peak season for forest fires. But this time, we have been lucky, thanks to good spells of pre-monsoon showers. Our department was well prepared to fight forest fires, and rain has only made our task easier. Fire lines were cleared well in advance and necessary equipment was put in place to address emergencies,” he added.
It may be recalled that a guard in Bandipur had died while dousing a forest fire last year. Though early March saw a major fire at Dodda Byranakuppe in Nagarahole Tiger Reserve during which a forest officer was killed by an elephant, no major incident has been reported after that.
Even fire alerts from the Forest Survey of India (FSI) have reduced for Karnataka as compared to other states. This is a deviation from the norm as Karnataka usually features among the top five states in terms of fire alerts every year, along with Maharashtra, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh and Odisha. In 2017, Karnataka saw 350% more forest fires than three years ago.
A senior forest officer from Bandipur Tiger Reserve said pre-monsoon showers have increased the water level in ponds and waterholes in the forest area. “Enough water in the reserve means wild animals need not cover long distances or migrate to other forests like Kabini. Even tourists are happy as they are sighting more wild animals these days,” he added.
According to officials with the meteorological department, almost all districts have received more than the normal pre-monsoon showers beginning March 1. “In places like Madikeri, Hassan, Mangaluru, Dharwad, Bengaluru, Chitradurga and Davanagere, the departure is more than 100mm,” said an official.

BENGALURU: The state will see the onset of monsoon on June 5 even as rains are likely to arrive a few days earlier on May 29 in Kerala. The south-west monsoon will be normal in the state this year after irregular rains across the state last year, according to the Meteorological Department. In 2017, there was excess rainfall in south and north Karnataka with a deficit in coastal areas.
This year, a normal monsoon will bring cheer to farmers who have had to fight fluctuating rains. In an earlier forecast, the Meteorological Department had predicted rainfall between June and September to be 97 per cent of the long period average which is a normal monsoon. On Sunday, officials confirmed the same.
“In the past 40 years of data, the onset of monsoon has been around June 5 and this year it is expected to hit south interior Karnataka around the same date. The rains will spread to all parts of the state within 4 days of June 5,” said CS Patil, Director, Meterological Department, Bengaluru.
A detailed forecast is expected to be issued in the next few days. Currently, pre-monsoon showers are being observed over several parts of the state including Bengaluru. According to the Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Center, all regions of the state will continue to recieve rainfall over the next few days and the pre-monsoon showers will stop ahead of the arrival of the monsoon.

Rain may cast cloud over Voting today.,
IMD predicts rainfall during evening hours till Tuesday; Officials advise voters to reach polling booths as early as possible
Published: 12th May 2018 05:41 AM |
BENGALURU: Rain could wreak havoc on the city’s expectations of a high voter turnout on Saturday for the state assembly elections. Bengaluru, which traditionally has a low voter turnout, saw only half of its registered voters coming out to vote in the 2013 assembly elections. Heavy rains on Friday evening resulted in flooding in many areas of the city and with rains expected on Saturday as well, there is likely to be a drop in voter numbers towards late afternoon and evening.
The rainfall that began around 5.45 pm continued till 7 pm across the city resulting in waterlogging on many roads and streets. Fallen trees and branches were a common sight in most of the wards and the BBMP Control Room was flooded with complaints. Tree falls were reported from Hosakerehalli, Girinagar, Nagarbhavi, Maruthinagar, Srinagar, Ramamurthynagar and JP Nagar areas. Waterlogging of roads was witnessed near Silk Board, Gopalan Mall on Old Madras Road and Indiranagar.
Traffic also moved at a snail’s pace following the rain in certain areas in and around Koramangala. Cabs were unavailable for quite sometime. Hailstones were reported at Horamavu.A scientist at Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre (KSNDMC) Sunil M Gavaskar said a trough persisting above Karnataka over past one week was causing regular rains. “More rain is expected in several parts of the state in coming days.”
The KSNDMC website recorded rainfall in the range of 0 mm to 72. 5 mm in Bengaluru Urban district, with an average total rain of 14.21 mm. As per the forecast by India Meteorological Department, rain would occur towards evening or night hours until Tuesday.
