State in Low-risk Seismic Zone...29th April 2015

BENGALURU:The next time you experience tremors in the state, don’t panic. Karnataka, on an average, records four to five mild tremors every month and these don’t last for more than a few seconds. The highest number of tremors recorded per year are in Vijayapura and Bagalkot. The two districts recorded 45 mild tremors in the last one year.   
Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre (KSNDMC) gets a real time alert on such mild quakes with the magnitude less than 1 to 4 on the Richter scale. The centre has installed seismic record systems at 13 places across the state.
“Despite being in a low-risk seismic zone of 2 and 3, Karnataka is one of the few states in the country to have taken safety measures,” Dr G S Srinivasa Reddy, director, KSNDMC, told Express.
According to him, all river beds form a major fault line (the surface of a fault fracture along which the rocks have been displaced) in the state, including the Arkavathy bed in Bengaluru. Reddy, however, said there is no need to panic as the tremors felt in the state measure less than 5 in magnitude on the Richter scale.
The last big recorded earthquake in Karnataka was in Ballari in 1863, measuring  6.5 on the Richter scale, Reddy said, noting that in the past five years they have not recorded anything beyond 4 on the Richter scale.
Some of the active seismic zones in the state include the Western Ghats, coastal areas which come under zone 3 and all rivers and reservoirs including KRS, Supa, Harangi and Almatti among others. In the Deccan Plateau, Koyna reservoir in Maharashtra falls under zone 4 which is a more active seismic zone. “This is a reservoir-induced seismic zone,” Reddy said, adding that “More pressure is exerted on the largest fault line in the Deccan Plateau on which Koyna is built.”

Saturday's showers rain misery in low-lying areas BENGALURU, APR 26, 2015

Showers that lashed the City on Saturday night have left many houses in low-lying areas inundated. Incessant rain coupled with gusty winds have uprooted a total of 45 full-grown trees at various parts of the City.

Residents of Anepalya and D J Halli (ward no 48) were the worst affected. Those residing close to Amar English School, D J Halli complained that rainwater mixed with sewage from the nearby stormwater drain gushed into their houses. At few houses, the water level stood at two to three feet.

While the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) officials on Sunday maintained that they have sent workers with pumpsets to drain out the rainwater that had gushed into houses, a few residents said that they had to clear the water, all by themselves.

"BBMP didn't send workers to pump out the water. With the help of kitchen utensils and buckets, we drained out the water on Saturday night. We could not sleep due to this. Everytime it rains, we have to struggle and bear the consequences," said, Kamrullah Khan, one of the aggrieved residents.

Mehboob K, a trader, said that the Armstrong Road adjacent to Kamaraj Road turns into a cesspool whenever it rains. "This is because there is no proper drainage system. The 'C' Lane on Armstrong Road is worst hit. Residents here are forced to endure water logging and traffic jams when the skies open up."

Mehboob lamented that repeated pleas to the civic authorities to address the rain-related woes have failed to yield desired results.

Meanwhile, the city received a total of 4.7 mm rainfall on Sunday ( till 5.30 pm) while the Karnataka International Airport (KIA) recorded trace rainfall and HAL airport no rainfall. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted cloudy sky accompanied by showers in the City for the next couple of days.

Thunderstorm claims boy's life in Mysuru MYSURU, APRIL 26, 2015,

A boy was killed and two were seriously injured by lightning at Mirle village in Mysuru district on Saturday afternoon.

The deceased has been identified as Sandeep (13). M K Chandra and Manjunath are the injured. The incident occurred when the three, who were herding sheep, took shelter under a tree during a downpour around 12.30 pm.

Following overcast conditions, Mysuru city recorded good rainfall during the day.
According to the Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Cell, the city and parts of Mysuru taluk received 41mm rainfall. Rainfall was fairly widespread in Nanjangud and K R Nagar taluks, which recorded 53.5mm and 32mm rainfall, respectively.

Sporadic rainfall was reported in T Narsipur taluk (56.5mm), Periyapatna (32.5mm), H D Kote (32mm) and Hunsur taluks (11.5mm).

In Hassan district, maximum rainfall was recorded in Hassan taluk (51.5mm). Parts of Holenarsipur (59.5mm) and Arkalgud taluks (39.5mm) also recorded good rainfall. Rain was scattered in other parts of the district.

Moderate rainfall was reported also in Mandya and Chamarajanagar districts.

XThe two-hour heavy downpour spoilt the Saturday outing of many Bengalureans. Many were stranded on road sides.

The BBMP control rooms were flooded with complaints of tree falling and waterlogging. While three trees fell at Indiranagar locality, two each were uprooted at Jayanagar and at Koramangala. Tree falling was also reported at Ali Asgar Road, Cunningham Road, Queens Road, near Press Club, MG Road, Shantinagar, near Hosmat Hospital, J P Nagar First Phase, KEB Road, Katriguppe and other areas.

The rainfall was accompanied by strong winds moving from south-westerly direction. Hailstorm was also reported in some places like Koramangala and M G Road. Those staying in low lying areas spent their evening clearing water. Water clogging was reported at Anil Kumble Circle, Binnymill Road, near Kino, Sujatha theatres, Kalidasa Circle at Majestic and K R Circle underpass. Rainwater gushed into houses located at Amarajyothi Colony at Domlur, K P Agrahara on Magadi Road, Journalists' Colony near J C Road and Doddanekkundi. The dirty water from storm water drain at Anepalya overflowed onto the streets. However, no houses were inundated.

BBMP control rooms to function 24/7
District in-charge Minister Ramalinga Reddy has directed all control rooms in the BBMP zones to be function 24/7. Rs 100-crore compensation sought

Chitradurga, April 21, 2015, DHNS:

 Leader of Opposition in the Legislative Council K S Eshwarappa has pressed the State government to release Rs 100 crore to compensate the crop loss suffered by the farmers of North Karnataka due to unseasonal rain in the recent past.

Speaking to reporters  here on Tuesday, he said, “The farmers from various districts in North Karnataka have suffered crop loss to the tune of Rs 350 crore but the chief minister is saying that he would hold a survey by officials and send the report to the Centre to seek a package.

A couple of places in the State received heavy rainfall on Tuesday.

Heavy rain accompanied by strong wind, thunder and lightning lashed some parts of Shivamogga district on Tuesday evening. Showers brought the much-needed respite from heat for the people of the district. Hosanagar taluk received moderate to heavy rainfall for about one hour in the evening. Rains wreaked havoc at Ripponpet in the taluk. Two houses on Thirthahalli Road in Ripponpet were damaged as the branch of a tree fell. Movement of vehicles on Sagar Road was disrupted for a while as the branch of a mango tree fell on the Government Pre-university College. Later, it was 
cleared. 

The roof tiles of a house near Bharvesale street on Shivamogga Road and of a government Urdu school were blown away due to strong winds. Power supply was disrupted in various parts of the taluk as branches of trees fell over electricity supplying lines.

Cloudy weather

Sagar, Shikaripur, Thirthahalli and Shivamogga taluks witnessed cloudy weather towards the evening signalling rain in the night.  Meanwhile, Kora hobli, Malehalli, Muddenahalli, Brahmasandra and the surrounding villages in Tumakuru taluk received heavy rainfall accompanied with hailstorm and gusty winds on Tuesday evening.
The hailstorm that lashed the taluk for more than an hour, has hit mango trees and several horticultural crops, like white and yellow crysanthamums. 
Loss worth lakhs of rupees has been estimated.

ಬೆಂಗಳೂರು, ಏಪ್ರಿಲ್ 17 ( ಕರ್ನಾಟಕ ವಾರ್ತೆ ) : ರಾಜ್ಯದ ಭತ್ತಜದ ಕಣಜ ಎಂದೇ ಹೆಸರಾದ ಕೊಪ್ಪಳ ಹಾಗೂ ರಾಯಚೂರು ಜಿಲ್ಲೆಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಇತ್ತೀಚೆಗೆ ಬಿದ್ದ ಆಲಿಕಲ್ಲು ಮಳೆಯಿಂದ ಪ್ರಾಥಮಿಕ ವರದಿಗಳ ಅಂದಾಜಿನಂತೆ 350 ಕೋಟಿ ರೂ ನಷ್ಟ ಉಂಟಾಗಿದೆ ಎಂದು ಪಶುಸಂಗೋಪನಾ ಮತ್ತು ಮುಜರಾಯಿ ಹಾಗೂ ಕಾನೂನು ಮತ್ತು ಸಂಸದೀಯ ವ್ಯವಹಾರಗಳ ಸಚಿವ ಶ್ರೀ ಟಿ. ಬಿ. ಜಯಚಂದ್ರ ಅವರು ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಇಂದು ತಿಳಿಸಿದರು.

ಸಚಿವ ಸಂಪುಟ ಸಭೆಯ ನಂತರ ಮಾಧ್ಯಮದವರನ್ನು ಉದ್ದೇಶಿಸಿ ಮಾತನಾಡುತ್ತಿದ್ದ ಅವರು 55,406 ಹೆಕ್ಟೇರ್ ಪ್ರದೇಶದಲ್ಲಿನ ಭತ್ತ, ಮುಸುಕಿನ ಜೋಳ ಹಾಗೂ ಹತ್ತಿ ಬೆಳೆ ನಾಶವಾಗಿದೆ. ಅಲ್ಲದೆ, 1434 ಹೆಕ್ಟೇರ್ ಪ್ರದೇಶದಲ್ಲಿನ ತೋಟಗಾರಿಕಾ ಬೆಳೆಗಳಿಗೂ ಹಾನಿಯಾಗಿದೆ. ಅಂತೆಯೇ, 14 ಜೀವ ಹಾನಿ ಸಂಭವಿಸಿದೆ. ಇದಲ್ಲದೆ, 90 ಜಾನುವಾರುಗಳು ಸಾವನ್ನಪ್ಪಿವೆ. ಜೊತೆಗೆ, 774 ಮನೆಗಳೂ ನಾಶವಾಗಿವೆ ಎಂದರು.

ಕೇಂದ್ರ ಸರ್ಕಾರದ ನೂತನ ರಾಷ್ಟ್ರೀಯ ವಿಪತ್ತು ಸ್ಪಂದನಾ ಪಡೆಯ ಮಾರ್ಗಸೂಚಿಗಳಂತೆ ಪ್ರತಿ ಹೆಕ್ಟೇರ್‍ಗೆ 13,500 ರೂ ಬೆಳೆ ಹಾನಿ ಪರಿಹಾರ ಕೊಡಬೇಕಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಅದರಂತೆ ಸಂಭವಿಸಿರುವ ನಷ್ಟಕ್ಕೆ 83 ಕೋಟಿ ರೂ ಪರಿಹಾರ ನೀಡಬೇಕಾಗುತ್ತದೆ ಆದರೆ, ಈ ಮೊತ್ತ ಅತಿ ಕಡಿಮೆ ಎಂಬುದು ಸಂಪುಟದ ಅಭಿಪ್ರಾಯವಾಗಿದೆ.

ಈ ಹಿನ್ನೆಲೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಸಂಕಷ್ಟದಲ್ಲಿರುವ ರೈತರಿಗೆ ರಾಜ್ಯ ಸರ್ಕಾರದಿಂದಲೂ ಹೆಚ್ಚುವರಿಯಾಗಿಸೂಕ್ತ ಪರಿಹಾರ ಘೋಷಿಸಬೇಕೆಂದು ಸಂಪುಟ ನಿರ್ಧರಿಸಿದೆ.

ಸಂಪುಟದ ಈ ನಿರ್ಣಯಕ್ಕೆ ಅನುಗುಣವಾಗಿ ಮುಖ್ಯಮಂತ್ರಿಗಳು ಶೀಘ್ರವೇ ತೀರ್ಮಾನ ಕೈಗೊಳ್ಳಲಿದ್ದಾರೆ ಎಂದು ಸಚಿವರು ವಿವರಿಸಿದರು

Compensation to farmers after joint survey report: CM

Compensation to farmers for the crops they have lost to unseasonal rain in five districts of the Hyderabad-Karnataka region would be given once officials of Agriculture and Revenue departments conduct a joint survey and submit a detailed report, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah said on Friday. 

“Unseasonal rain in the recent past has caused extensive damage to crops in Koppal, Ballari, Yadgir, Kalaburagi and Bidar districts. Aerial survey has been conducted in Gangavati, Sindhanur, Manvi, Sirguppa and Kanakagiri. I have personally inspected the damage caused to crops in several areas.

The extent of damage will be known after the joint survey to be conducted by the officials of Revenue and Agriculture departments. The officials have been told to submit a detailed report in two to three days. The government will take steps to distribute the compensation to the affected farmers based on the guidelines laid down by the Centre,” the chief minister told reporters after undertaking an aerial survey of the rain-affected areas. 

He said the government might announce a special package for the affected region, if needed. Siddaramaiah further said compensation would be distributed to the kin of the deceased farmers.

 So far, the government used to pay a compensation of Rs 1.5 lakh in case of death. Henceforth, a compensation of Rs four lakh would be paid to the family members of the deceased. Likewise, compensation for crop loss is being increased to Rs 13,450 per hectare from Rs 9,000 per hectare. Compensation for horticulture crop loss will be enhanced from Rs 12,000 to Rs 18,000 per hectare. Persons injured in natural calamities will get a compensation of Rs 2 lakh, he added.

Extent of damage 

According to sources, crops on 56,112 hectares of land have suffered damaged due to the unseasonal rain in the recent past. Horticulture crops on 1,450 hectares too have suffered damage. Thunder showers have left 14 dead in the Hyderabad-Karnataka region. Further, 774 cattle heads in the region were killed during the rain.

Agriculture Minister Krishna Byre Gowda, Koppal MP Sanganna Karadi and others were present.
