Copious showers: Almatti dam gets 2 lakh cusecs water in a day :: 18th July 2016

BENGALURU: THE Almatti reservoir received an inflow of more than two lakh cusecs of water on Sunday, following heavy downpour in Maharastra.

Copious showers around catchment area, resulting in a flood-like situation around Koyna dam, has forced the release of water towards Almatti reservoir.

Inflow at Almatti reservoir as of Sunday morning was at 2,05,942 cusecs. The reservoir is just four feet away from reaching Full Reservoir Level (FRL).

Water levels, as per recent readings, stood at 1700.21 feet, against FRL of 1704.81 feet.

Except from Almatti reservoir, inflow at other major reservoirs in the state, including Linganamakki in Malnad

region, has trickled down owing to reduced showers during the past fortnight.

It has also affected the  KRS reservoir, where water level was at 96.95 feet (above sea level) against 108.80 feet on the same day last year.

Light to moderate showers

According to a forecast by Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Cell (KSNDMC), showers will be reported in the first half of the week, after which rains will reduce significantly.

A KSNDMC scientist told Express that south-interior Karnataka will receive light to moderate showers, while it will be scattered in the northern part’s of the state over the next couple of days. During this period, coastal and Malnad regions will receive widespread to heavy rains.

During the first fortnight of the month, rainfall has reduced drastically, resulting in an overall monsoon deficiency of 21 per cent in the state. However, Met officials said that they are not expecting a dry spell this year, though similar conditions were observed last year.

The dry spell had stretched up to the first two weeks of August, before monsoons revived in the state, last year. “Even though there are doubts over the intensity of rainfall, all parts will receive on and off showers and that will help agricultural activity,” the official added.
