Monsoon to get better in the coming days
25th July 2016

BENGALURU: FAIRLY widespread showers are forecast for all parts of the state for this week, after South West Monsoon weakened during the first 20 days of July. According to Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Cell (KSNDMC), monsoon has revived and is expected to improve further during the remaining days of the month.

Rainfall was scanty in 36 taluks -- of which most of them are catchment areas in Malnad region -- and deficient in 53 taluks during the past week. In all the four districts of Malnad region -- Shivamogga, Hassan, Chikkamagaluru and Kodagu -- rainfall was deficient by 60 per cent or more.

This is the second consecutive year in which monsoon has been deficient in July. Normal or the average amount of rain received during the month is generally high for July. However, it has been deficient this year, said a spokesperson for KSNDMC. Rainfall was also deficient in July 2015 and the month had recorded a dry spell.

Inflow to improve?

As scanty rain has led to reduced inflows into major reservoirs of the state, especially KRS, parts of South-interior Karnataka will head for trouble if the situation continues. Water level at KRS was at 98.70 feet on July 23. On the same date last year, water levels were at 109.96 feet and the reservoir had 10 tmcft more water.

Meterologists are now pinning hopes on the revival of monsoon to feed KRS and other major reservoirs of the State.
