Rains hit normal life in Kodagu, C'magaluru MADIKERI/ CHIKKAMAGALURU

Rains intensified in Kodagu and Chikkamagaluru districts on Sunday. A huge tree fell on the State Highway at Hattihole near Somwarpet and disrupted movement of vehicles. All vehicles travelling to Hassan and Somwarpet had to use an alternative road.

Gruel centres have been opened in Madikeri CMC School and community halls in case of an emergency. Residents of all thoses houses that face the threat of collapse will be shifted to safer areas, said CMC Commissioner Pushpavathi.

On the other hand, heavy rain has thrown normal life out of gear in Malnad. The gusty wind has disrupted the power supply in the region. Trees inside many coffee plantations have been uprooted in the malnad region.

The plateau region (bayaluseeme) has also experienced moderate rain and the farmers have intensfied agriculture activities.

The farmers were engaged in tilling land at Kanathi, Vastare and Aladagudde region. With the heavy rain lashing Kadrimidri, Malalooru, KR Pete, Haluvalli, Hadihalli region, the water level in Hemavathi, Bhadra and Tunga rivers have increased.

The waterfalls at Gangadikallu, Hanumanagundi, Sirimane and Honnammanahalla have been attracting a lot of tourists as they have regained their splendour.

Farmers happy

The rains in Kadur have brought back smile on the face of farmers. They were worried for their crops as the rains had disappeared in the last one month.

The farmers in the taluk have sown cotton, groundnut and onion. With the disappearance of the rain, the saplings had started to wither. However, the rain has rekindled hope in farmers, who have started sowing ragi.
