Man dies in lightning strike in Ballari
One man was killed after he was struck by lightning in Devarabuddenahalli in Sandur taluk on Thursday.
Heavy rain, accompanied by gusty winds, lashed the district on the day. There were reports of damage to banana plantations and a few houses in various parts of the district, according to official sources.
The name of the deceased is given as Harijan Mallappa. So far four persons have died – three this month and one in April – after being struck by lightning.
Figures
Ballari district recorded an average rainfall of 16.7 mm. Ballari taluk recorded the highest rainfall of 30.6 mm, Sandur 24.0 mm, Hagari Bommanahalli 21.6 mm, Hadagali 18.8 mm, Sirguppa 10.0 mm, Hosapete 7.8 mm and Kudligi 4.2 mm.
The gusty winds damaged banana plantations in vast patches in villages including Venkatapur, Nimbapur, Venkatapur camp, Bukkasagar and surrounding places.
Houses were damaged in Hadagali, Ballari city and surrounding places.
Trees were uprooted and electricity poles fell in some places.
Fire breaks out
Fire broke out in Kamalapur town near Hampi in a house and a refrigerator was damaged.
No casualties were reported. Neighbours, on hearing the sound, rescued the residents by breaking open a window pane.
Fire and Emergency personnel doused the fire.
Power supply hit
Power supply was badly hit in Ballari city and other places on Thursday night.
The supply, which went off around 6.30 p.m. was restored only at 8.30 a.m. the next day in Ballari city, residents said.
