BIJAPUR, In drought-hit Bijapur, rain brings misery to farmers

Bijapur district, known for its
perennial drought, received higher
than usual rainfall in April. It
received 56 mm rainfall in April,
against the average of 31 mm.
Except for Bijapur, the other four
taluks - Indi, Sindagi, Muddebihal
and Basavana Bagewadi - received
more rainfall than usual in the last
month.
While Basavana Bagewadi received
50.30 mm against the usual
amount of 4 mm, Indi received
94.60 mm as against 27mm,
Muddebihal 55.60 mm as against
33mm and Sindagi 46.80 as against
24 mm. Bijapur taluk received 31.50
mm as against 37 mm.
Usually the district receives 3 mm
rainfall each in January and
February, 5 mm in March and 20
mm in April. But this year, the
rainfall in January was nil, 4.8 mm
in February, 35.7 mm in March and
15.5 in April.
Thus there was more rainfall in
February and March but less in
January and April.
More rainfall, however, brought
havoc. Lightning killed one person
each in Gotakakhandaki village in
Muddebihal taluk, and in Anjutagi,
Gornal, Hattalli and Lalasang
villages of Indi taluk.
Two buffaloes in Chikkarugi village
and another in Madari village of
Sindhagi taluk became its victims
on May 4.
The district witnessed devastating
hailstorm and rainfall in February
and March.
In Devar Hipparagi village of
Sindhagi taluk, two people died
when a house collapsed.
Besides, 222 animals-four oxen,
five cows, seven buffaloes, 54
sheep, 52 goats and 100 hens-died
in the hailstorm and rain. Also, 736
houses were partially damaged.
The rain and hailstorm damaged
standing agriculture crops ready
for harvesting in almost every
taluk, with Indi, Bijapur and
Sindhagi being the worst hit.
The break-up of crops lost is
jowar (millet) on 55,581 hectares
worth Rs 90.04 crore, maize on
15,714 hectares worth Rs 8.66
crore, wheat on 28,962 hectares
worth Rs 48-87 crore, Bengal gram
(chicken pea) on 37,745 hectares
worth Rs 100.16 crore, sugar cane
on 4,216 hectares worth Rs 105.40
crore, cotton on 4,265 hectares
worth 30.70 crore and oil seeds on
459 hectares worth 64.26 lakh.
Besides, nearly 75,384 tonnes of
grape crop ready for harvesting on
4,188 hectares worth Rs 196 crore,
4,125 tonnes of pomegranate on
375 hectares worth Rs 33 crore,
73,161 tonnes of lemon on 2,927
hectares worth Rs 87.79 crore,
10,504 tonnes of onion worth Rs
10,50 crore, 5,179 tonnes of banana
worth Rs 5.18 crore and 13,575
tonnes of vegetable worth Rs 5.31
crore were lost in the hailstorm
and unseasonal rain.
The government gave
compensation to the families of
those killed by lightning, but for
the large number of farmers whose
standing crops were lost,
compensation has still been a
mirage.

More rain predicted this month BANGALORE, MAY 2, 2014,

The pre-monsoon showers, which
were below normal last month
(April), are likely to intensify this
month, according to officials in
the Indian Meteorological
Department.
Parts of Bangalore east, west,
north and central business district
received good rains on Friday
evening.
"Rainfall is likely to intensify in
May. There is a trough of low
pressure at mean sea level over
southwest Bay of Bengal which is
moving towards the west. This is
likely to intensify gradually and
under this influence Tamil Nadu,
Karnataka and parts of Kerala will
receive good to heavy rainfall,”
IMD Bangalore director B Puttanna
told Deccan Herald.He added that
pre-monsoon showers normally
intensify in May and the scanty
rainfall in April would be
compensated with copious
showers in May. "The temperatures
will also vary. More cyclones could
occur in May, which will also bring
more rainfall,” Puttanna added.
In April, the City recorded 15 mm
rainfall against the average of 44
mm. For May, the IMD has forecast
109.5 mm rainfall. On Thursday,
the City recorded 0.6 mm rains and
till 5.30 pm on Friday it had rained
0.6 mm at HAL Airport. The
mercury levels also came down
from 36 degrees Celsius on
Thursday to 35.8 degrees Celsius
on Friday.

Rain Continues in Twin Cities, Youth Dies in Lightning Strike

Pre-monsoon showers continued to lash Hubli -Dharwad and surrounding villages for the third day.
On Friday too, it rained heavily for almost four hours in Hubli affecting normal life in most parts of
the city.
One young boy has died when lightening struck him when he was taking shelter under a tree in
Sonia Gandhi Nagar here. The deceased has been identified as Jayakeerti Ajit Patil (19), a PU
student.
The rain, which started off slowly at around 3 pm, gradually progressed into a continuous and
raging downpour laced with gusty wind and thunders leading to a lot of damage in the city.
At Old Hubli, roofs of several houses were torn off their hinges and rainwater entered several houses
at low-lying areas in the city as drains were clogged, especially in Heggeri and surrounding
localities.
A number of trees were uprooted in several parts of the city like Ghantikeri, Karki Basaveshwar
Nagar, Keshwapur, Banashankari Colony, Vinay Colony, Shantiniketan School, Mantur road and other
places.
Quite a few number of electric poles also collapsed at different places thus affecting the power
supply. Several vehicles were damaged.
Dharwad also witnessed its first hailstorm of the season on Friday evening. The half-an-hour rain
brought joy to the people living in safe localities as they were excited to pick hailstones. However,
for those living in low-lying areas and slums it was nothing short of a nightmare.
Drains were clogged in a number of places, including Michigan compound (Saptapur) and Malmaddi.
A number of houses were flooded at Nagarakar Colony. The showers also brought down tree
branches at some places, disrupting traffic.
Water logging was quite a common scene on the twin cities roads. While four-wheelers were stalled
on the roads, two-wheeler riders tried to wade through ankle-deep water.
Power supply, in most of the areas, went off even before the rain started and was restored after a
couple of hours. As the street lights went off and roads became slippery, a few two-wheeler riders
skidded at some places, sustaining minor injuries.
Speaking to the Express, DC Sameer Shukla said a few properties were damaged in Angadi and
Belagali villages. However, details will be known once the tahsildars give their reports, he added.

Rain Brings Cheer to Farmers

Thanks to the unexpected rain that lashed the district last week, farmers are now busy preparing
their fields for sowing.
Farmers of Agasge, Kangrali, Hadigannur, Kadoli, Jaffarwadi, Savgaon, Kudremani and surrounding
villages are busy with ploughing work. Most of them are planning to cultivate paddy, potato and
sweet potato.
Farmer Sakharam Patil of Kudremani village in Belgaum taluk said the climate is perfect for the
farmers to commence ground work for sowing. Patil has started ploughing his field for paddy. He
said he is expecting a better yield this year due to the suitable weather. “I am only hoping that the
rains will be on time this season,” he said.
Farmer Bandu Patil of Hindalga village in Belgaum taluk said most farmers have already started
ploughing and as a result the demand for the tractors is on the rise. Farmers are hiring tractors at
`350 to `400 per hour. We are also facing scarcity of labour, he said.

Heavy rains throws life out of gear MYSORE, MAY 1,

Pre monsoon showers on Thursday
brought down trees and blocked
drainages in several parts of the
City. However no casualties were
reported.
The City has been experiencing
showers for the past two days, but
heavy rains accompanied by
thunderstorms on Thursday
resulted in several tree falls. Heavy
winds brought down trees in
Anegundi in Lashkar Mohalla and
Kukkarahalli lake, where a big tree
branch fell on the lake bund. Water
logging was reported from several
places, as drains were blocked.
Officials from Mysore City
Corporation control room said they
had received several such
complaints and that they were in
the process of having the drains
cleared. MET Department officials
said that rain with heavy wind
would continue in Mysore for
another four days. On Thursday,
Mysore city received 22.5 mm
rains.
District Fire Officer H M
Shivanegowda confirmed there
were no any casualties. ACP
(Traffic) Prabhakar Bhakri told
Deccan Herald that the city was
spared of any traffic pile ups.
Several other parts of the district
too received heavy showers.
Chamarajangar
Incessant rains in city district
threw life out of gear as heavy
wind brought down trees and
damaged houses. The loss from
the damage to property is
estimated to run into lakhs of
rupees. Damage to houses and
huts, fallen electric poles and
coconut trees and damage to
paddy crops were all reported from
the villages of Arakalavadi,
Manchagundipura, Linganapura,
Chowdalli, Ankanashettypura and
Amachavadi villages in
Chamarajanagar. A fallen electric
pole in Chowdalli was removed
quickly after it fell across a road.
Mandya
Mandya was also not spared as
heavy rains that lashed the place
for an hour blew roofs off houses
and shops in Kikkeri. Water
logging was also reported from
these areas. Trees were uprooted
on the Bangalore-Mysore highway,
blocking the road and resulting in
a traffic jam for a while.
Hassan
The district received mild rains
and one incidence of water
logging was reported from
Basattikoppalu road.
