Bangalore urban registers record rainfall
Oct 11, 2014, Bangalore: DHNS:
Heavy rain in Bangalore urban district in the last 10 days has not only battered the City but also registered a record for the highest rainfall received in 24 hours.

According to Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre (KSNDMC), on October 9, Hampinagar in Vijayanagar recorded the maximum rainfall of 140.5 mm in 24 hours.

In the last one week, 154 per cent more rainfall was recorded from October 5 to 11, measuring an average of 122.3 mm of rainfall as against the normal average of 48.1 mm in Bangalore Urban district, including the City.

From October 1 to 11, there has been 61 per cent additional rainfall, recording an average of 127.1 mm rainfall as against the normal average of 78.8 mm.

A KSNDMC official said somewhere in 1997, 140 mm of rainfall in 24 hours was recorded in the City.

However, these records cannot be scientifically endorsed as the number of rain gauges to measure rainfall were less in number compared to the number of gauges that are installed now.

KSNDMC has installed over 100 rain gauges across the City to monitor and measure rainfall. The cumulative rainfall calculated from October 1 to 9 include areas like Hampinagar, East Manorayanapalya, HBR Layout, Kammanahalli, and East Banaswadi,  recording more than 200 mm of rainfall on an average.

Many areas like Gali Anjaneya temple, Byatarayanapura, Kodigehalli, Radhakrishna temple ward, Kushalnagar, Benniganahalli and Vijnana Nagar have recorded an average of 175.1 to 200 mm of rainfall.
