Heavy rains which pounded the coastal districts of Karnataka threw normal life out of gear on Sunday.
Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts received good rains. The Kumaradhara bridge which connects the temple town of Kukke Subrahmanya submerged at 3.30 pm due to the good rainfall in the catchment areas in the Western Ghats. The water flowing on the bridge prevented the vehicular movement and police were deployed to prevent people from crossing the bridge.
The low-lying areas in Mangaluru were flooded due to lack of stormwater drains. Rain water entered several houses in Subhash Nagar, Bhagavathi Nagar and Kottara in Mangaluru. Deputy commissioner of Kasargod has declared holiday for schools and colleges on Monday. The holiday is applicable to colleges offering professional courses as well. However, entrance exam for PU course and university exams will not be affected with the holiday.
Kodagu
Talacauvery and Bhagamandala in Kodagu received heavy rains. The water level in the Triveni Sangama at Bhagamandala has increased drastically.
There was four to five feet water on Bhagamandala-Napoklu road which affected movement of vehicles. The water is flowing on Bhagamandala-Madikeri road as well. Rivers Cauvery, Barapole and Lakshmanatheertha are in spate. Steps have been taken to shift the people on the banks of river to safer areas. The water level in Harangi reservoir stood at 2857.01 feet. The inflow of water was 10,253 cusecs and 4,453 cusecs water was released into the river.
Traffic hit on ghat
The caving in of a hillock disrupted the movement of vehicles on NH 174 on Charmadi Ghat stretch for more than two hours. With the rains lashing Malnad and Tunga river overflowing, Sringeri too is facing the threat of floods. The river has reached danger level and water is flowing on Nemmaru bridge. The movement of vehicles on Sringeri-Nemmaru road has been disrupted. The rain has also disrupted the power supply. Water level of Tunga river in Kalasa and Balehonnur has increased drastically.
Uttara Kannada
Monsoon has picked up pace in Uttara Kannada district. Coastal towns such as Honnavar, Kumta, Ankola received heavy rains and so also Sirsi and Yallapur. A 25-year-old man was washed away in Sharavathi waters in Mundalli of Bhatkal taluk. Julfil Allahu had been to the river for a swim when the incident occurred. Water gushed into low-lying areas in Karwar.
Shivamogga
Heavy rains pummelled Shivamogga district on Sunday inundating farmlands in Sorab, Sagar and Shikaripur taluks. The Tunga reservoir has been receiving 45,000 cusecs of water and an equal quantity of water is being released through 11 crest gates.
The river is in spate in Shivamogga. The water level in Linganamakki reservoir has reached 1775.40 feet while that in Bhadra dam was 159.2 feet. Holiday has been declared for schools and colleges in Tirthahalli and Hosanagar taluks.
Showers lashed Chitradurga town for about an hour in the evening affecting movement of traffic for about an hour.
