Rain floods roads, spells trouble for BTM Layout, Koramangala residents
BENGALURU: Heavy rain pounded Bengaluru on Tuesday night,Causing residents in several localities to wake up to waterlogged roads on Wednesday morning.
Showers began late evening in spurts and intensified as the night progressed. While the Met department put the quantum of Tuesday’s rain at 22.4mm in the heart of the city, Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre said Bommanahalli received the highest rainfall of 97mm. KSNDMC described the rain as heavy in southeast Bengaluru and moderate (7.5mm to
35mm) elsewhere in Bengaluru.
The impact was severe in BTM Layout, HSR Layout, Koramangala, Bommanahalli and Singasandra, where residents had a tough time
safeguarding their vehicles with several low-lying roads flooded with knee-deep water. Staff of business establishments in the
affected areas had to stay indoors till the water receded.
Syed Saheb, employee of a furniture store in BTM Layout, said it started to pour around 8pm and by 10pm, the whole street
was inundated. “Many cars and two-wheelers were stranded. A car driver ended up with injuries after ramming a median as he
couldn’t see it,” Saheb said.
A furniture store owner from BTM Layout, Syed Fouzan, said Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) and Bangalore
Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) need to plan better and ensure rainwater is drained into lakes. “It rained
incessantly on Tuesday. I feared the water may enter my store and damage the products,” Fouzan said.
Residents of 29th Main in BTM Layout said it was first time they had seen the stretch flooded after a rain spell. “Four cars and
two two-wheelers were submerged in five-ft deep water. Usually when it rains, this road doesn’t get inundated,” said Naveen
Reddy, a social activist, adding: “No civic authorities came to our rescue.”
Rain lashed the city again on Wednesday night and areas like Jogupalya, RR Nagar and Hemmigepura reported power cuts for
A senior BBMP engineer (BTM Layout) said BWSSB had dig up the road for laying pipelines. “The pipeline developed leakage
at several places. We diverted the water to the adjoining Madiwala Lake,” the engineer added.
Heavy showers this week
GS Patil, scientist, India Meteorological Department (IMD), said Bengaluru will receive widespread rainfall over the next five
days. “South interior Karnataka will get heavy rainfall this week, while North Karnataka will receive scattered showers for the
next three days and heavy rain after that,” Patil said, adding: “The sudden rainfall is due to increase in temperature leading to
thunderstorm and formation of cumulonimbus clouds.”
