With heavy rains continuing to batter Kodagu, leaving the river Cauvery in spate, the district administration declared a holiday for schools and colleges on Wednesday.
Rains, however, receded in neighbouring Dakshina Kannada and in Belgaum and Shimoga districts.
As landslides were reported from various parts of the Kodagu district, Deputy Commissioner Anurag Tewari declared a holiday. Houses were damaged in eight places in Somwarpet taluk.
Talacauvery and Bhagamandala received 10.4 cm rainfall in the last 24 hours. Boats have been kept ready to ferry people to safety if flooding occurs. The water level in the Lakshmanatheertha, Barapole, Hattihole and Harangi rivers has risen and the Harangi reservoir is less than two feet away from the full mark of 2,859 ft.
In Shimoga district, though the water level in the Linganamakki dam is close to the maximum mark of 1,819 feet, water is unlikely to be released immediately as the inflow was not heavy on Tuesday.
According to dam authorities, water may be released from the dam when the inflow doubles to 50,000 cusecs from the present 28,000 cusecs. Though rains receded in many parts of the district, Malnad taluks, including Thirthahalli, Sagar and Hosanagar continued to face wet weather.
In Belgaum district, the river Krishna and its tributaries continued to swell despite rains receding in Chikodi taluk and the Western Ghats region of Maharashtra. In Raichur, Opposition leader Jagadish Shettar charged that the government was in a slumber and had not provided succour to the flood-affected.
He was speaking to reporters after visiting some flood-hit areas. Criticising Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Revenue Minister Sreenivas Prasad for not going to the flood-affected areas, the former chief minister suggested that the government order a survey and compensate the flood-affected people of North Karnataka and Hyderabad-Karnataka districts. The state BJPwould back the government in seeking financial help from the Centre, Shettar said.
Inflow into KRS dam rises
The inflow of water into the Krishnaraja Sagar (KRS) reservoir, in the taluk, is gradually increasing in the wake of heavy rainfall in the catchment area of the River Cauvery, in Kodagu district, said sources in the Cauvery Neeravari Nigam.
