BENGALURU: With several parts of the state receiving rainfall in the past few days, the Meteorological Department has forecast that the showers are likely to continue for the next two days.
Southwest monsoon showers are also forecast in parts of the state till the second week of October. This could bring temporary respite from the sultry weather in some parts of the state.
According to Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre (KSNDMC), rainfall has been close to average in September. While the weighted average for the state for September is 145.5 mm, it has recorded 156 mm this month. In September, south interior Karnataka received 164 mm rainfall against an average of 124.1 mm. Tumakuru, Chitradurga and Bengaluru rural districts received 50 per cent more than the average rainfall.
Rainfall in north interior Karnataka and Malnad region too was in the average range. However, coastal Karnataka experienced deficient rainfall by 12 per cent.
Reservoir Levels
According to a scientist at KSNDMC, reservoir levels might improve marginally in south interior Karnataka in the next two weeks. “Wayanad region, which is the prime catchment area for KRS reservoir, has received good showers in the past two days. If such conditions prevail for a week or more, levels at KRS will record an increase,” he said.
As on Monday, the water level at KRS stood at 103.63 feet against a maximum of 124.8 feet. The reservoir had 25.8 tmc of water as against a maximum of 49.45 tmc. Rainfall is forecast in parts of Malnad till October 15. This will increase inflow to other reservoirs.
City saw moderate Rain
Several parts of Bengaluru city recorded light to moderate showers over the past three days. On September 26, maximum rainfall was recorded near Kempegowda International Airport, at 37 mm. Rainfall was relatively sparse on September 27. The next day, 64.6 mm was recorded near the airport, 38.4 mm in parts of the city and 28.4 mm in HAL.
