Heavy rains continue to lash North Karnataka districts SEPTEMBER 10, 2015,BENGALURU, DHNS

Moderate to heavy rains continued to lash parts of the State for the third day on Wednesday.

It began to rain since morning in Yadgir. Almost all parts of the district received rains in the day. Inflow into Almatti reservoir began following showers in catchment areas.

Koppal too received good rains on Tuesday night. An under-construction bridge collapsed near Ningapura in Yalaburga taluk as a result of which water gushed into a nearby village. Kushtagi received copious rains.

A woman was killed after the cement bricks of a dampened wall fell on her head in her house at Toranagal in Ballari district. The deceased has been identified as Mahalingamma (55).

The Raravi bridge which connects Ballari district with Andhra Pradesh is submerged under the waters of Hagari river. Hundreds of vehicles take this route to reach Mantralaya, Adavani,Tirupati and Vijayawada. However, the police have banned the movement of vehicles on this road as the bridge structure has become weak.

Hospital portico collapses

A person was killed and eight were injured after the portico of the Vijayanagar Institute of Medical Sciences (Vims) collapsed. The deceased has been identified as Ramesh (40), a resident of Sidiganahal village in Kudligi taluk. He had come to the hospital to visit a relative admitted at the hospital. All the victims were standing beneath the portico to take shelter from rains when the incident occurred.

Raichur

Raichur district has been receiving heavy rains since Tuesday night. A bridge between Hatti and Kota was washed away in rain waters affecting road connectivity to the villages. Widespread rains were reported from Lingsugur taluk. Water from an overflowing pond gushed into nearby farm fields. Agricultural activities have gained momentum following rains.

Uttara Kannada

Uttara Kannada continued to receive good rains throughout the day. Coastal towns such as Bhatkal, Honnavar, Kumta, Karwar received rains from dawn to dusk.

Belagavi

Several parts of the district received moderate rains. Heavy rains lashed Nippani town for over an hour which brought down the mercury level.

According to official sources the rain gauge in Nesargi hobli in Bailhongal taluk recorded 70.5 mm of rains.

Bagalkot

The district continued to receive rains for the fourth day. Ponds and tanks have been overflowing with water gushing into low-lying areas. Standing crops are under threat as rain water has stagnated in the farm fields. Movement of vehicles on the Kudalasangama-Myageri-Almatti Road has come to a standstill as two ponds are overflowing, submerging the road. The district received 25.9 mm of rain from Tuesday evening till Wednesday.

Dharwad

The Navalgund town in Dharwad district received heavy rains for three hours. Several roads were waterlogged while rainwater gushed into low-lying areas
