Heavy rain pounds city:::Rain causes waterlogging, uproots trees

Heavy rain lashed the city for almost two hours on Wednesday evening uprooting trees, electric poles and flooding houses in low-lying areas.
According to the observation as of 8.30 p.m., the city registered a rainfall of 13.5 mm and HAL Airport 18 mm.
Traffic too came to a crawl, with stranded motorists and broken-down vehicles, becoming a common sight across the city.
The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagar Palike’s control room was flooded with phone calls. “There were two trees that fell near Varthur lake. Trees were also uprooted in Adugodi, Whitefield, J.P. Nagar, Kengeri, Koramangala, H.S.R. Layout, Palace Road, and Vijayanagar,” a control room officer said.
There were also complaints of flooding. “An apartment complex was flooded in Bellandur. Three houses were flooded in R.R. Nagar and one house in H.S.R. Layout. The road under the NICE flyover in Hosikeri was also flooded,” the office added. While the maximum temperature was 33 degrees Celsius in the afternoon, it drastically dropped to 22.4 degrees Celsius by 5.30 p.m. “It is part of the pre-monsoon showers which is expected to hit the city sometime next week,” said the weather duty officer.
Two electric poles were damaged in Indiranagar and one in Kengeri. Tree falls also affected power supply in Indiranagar, Hebbal, Koramangala, R.R. Nagar, Jayanagar, Peenya and Rajajinagar.
Waterlogging was reported at the Kadu Beesanahalli underpass, while many houses were flooded at Bommanahalli, Araluru and HSR Layout.
The Met department said the core city received 13.5 mm rain, while the Old Airport area received 80 mm rain. It has forecast that the weather will be generally cloudy and there will be one or two spells of rain or thundershowers. Temperature will be between 20 degree Celsius and 33 degree Celsius. -


BENGALURU: Two people were seriously injured and five others sustained minor injuries after an autorickshaw and two bikes fell into a caved-in part of a storm water drain in Gowdanapalya in Padmanabhanagar on Wednesday evening.
The incident occurred after a burst of heavy rain, fire department officials from Subramanyapura said. According to them, the stone slabs over a huge storm water drain collapsed and part of the road caved in around 7.15 pm. One auto and two bikes fell into the drain along with seven people.
Soon, the fire and emergency services were alerted who rushed to the spot.
They took the help of locals to shift the injured in ambulances to a nearby hospital.
“While two people sustained serious injuries, five others were offered first-aid and discharged immediately,” said officials.
The vehicles were lifted from the drain and towed away. Traffic was disrupted for a while after the collapsed drain was barricaded.The traffic police rushed to the spot to ensure smooth flow of traffic.
City gets a feel of monsoon
THE city recorded widespread showers, accompanied by thunder and lightning on Wednesday. Heavy downpour was reported in parts of Bellandur, where up to 104 mm of rainfall was recorded. East and South Bengaluru received good showers as compared to other parts of the city. Other parts of the city recorded moderate rainfall during the day. Parts of south-interior Karnataka, Malnad and coastal regions also received showers. About 54 mm rainfall was recorded in parts of Belur in Hassan district, 45.5 mm near T Narsipur and 43.5 mm near H D Kote in Mysuru district.
Pre-monsoon showers recorded between the months of January and May too have been deficient by 31 per cent in Karnataka, said Gavaskar. Rainfall was scarce between February and April, but the situation improved with good showers in May, he added.
Uprooted trees hit traffic
Traffic at many places came to a halt after trees were uprooted due to heavy downpour on Wednesday.  Two trees were uprooted in many locations.  Rainwater rushed inside eight
houses in Gangodanahalli and one house in HSR Layout. Various underpasses were also blocked by  rainwater bringing traffic to a halt.
